Have you checked all your vacuum hoses, even the kinda hidden ones around the engine?? They have been the culprits on 50% of my CEL codes.

I've been getting this code on my 2001 Weekender with 90k miles.
The text is "bank 1 lean".

So far I have replaced the fuel filter and the MAF. The intake had some
oil in it which extended upstream a bit past the MAF but not into the
air box.

Unfortunately I am still getting the code. What's next? OS sensors?
How difficult are they to replace?

Re: Chronic Limp Mode - 97 EVC

Maybe check all parts of your wiring harness, particularly the part that connects to the tranny.

Pulled from my message from a few years ago #145776

"Well, depending on how bad the melted wires are... you may be able to repair. ?I was on a roadtrip when I went into Limp Mode as I approached Reno, NV. ?The shop I took it to couldn't diagnose for 3 days. ?Then, the tech found that a small radiator leak had dropped superheated coolant/water onto the wires that attach to the transmission. ?As you have discovered, the wiring harness is expensive and elusive. ?I thought all was lost. ?I think there are about 8 leads. ?I asked him if he could cut out the melted section and solder in some new wire. ?Luckily, there was just enough lead on the connector to do so. ?After he finished, it didn't seem like anything had changed. ?But I remember from the group about the transmission reset procedure... did it... Two years later, my 93 EV is still going."

Updating the thread:

I pulled both the TCU and ECU out of the van and brought them to work (hi-tech device engineering co). I asked one of our electrical engineers to inspect the printed circuit boards.? They found nothing wrong, all the solder joints were good, no voids, cracks, corrosion.? I did get a bit more aggressive in cleaning the pins.? After re-install, I was still in limp mode.

I decided to take the van on a trip anyway, shifting manually and going slow on the highway.? As I mentioned previously, it will often fix itself randomly along the road.? 1 hour into the drive, that's exactly what happened - into overdrive she goes - Life is Great!? Except I have no idea why it keeps doing this, and I'm certain it will fail again before long.

Once again, the instrument panel went haywire briefly, immediately before the tranny came out of limp mode.? I should mention that when this epilepsy occurs, my digital clock resets to 1PM and the trip odometer clears itself back to 0.0.? Strange...

I'll keep trying to find the problem and will update again.? Thanks.

Re: FLASH! VW introduces a new Campervan, the California

Malcolm Stebbins

I have SOME experience with this.? Most Fly and Drive and Import deals initially order the vehicle to US/CDN specifications, then one has NO problems importing the vehicle (just pay the import tax).

The US had (Has?) a 25 year rule, that is if the vehicle is older than 25 years, it qualifies as an antique vehicle and does NOT have to meet US specifications.? In Canada, it's a 15 year rule (I imported a 16" Syncro Vanagon under this 15 year rule... no problems).?

I'm NOT sure if these are current regulations or NOT???

If a vehicle does NOT meet us specs, then it has to be modified to do so.? there are some companies that can and will modify SOME vehicles to meet US specs (This can include replacing all glass & Exterior lights), but expect to PAY a LOT.? I often read of horror stories of Ferraries? sitting in the port, that can't get out.

Last I read, one can import a foreign vehicle into the USA for one year, then it must be exported? ... maybe through the SAME port of entry.?? m2cw?? Malcolm

Can these be purchased in Germany, driven around on a holiday, and then imported by a private party as a used vehicle as I understand people do (especially service people overseas) with other types of cars, or are the regulations that prevent commercial import as difficult for a one off import?

Does anyone have experience with these sort of fly and drive purchases?????? Alain

Re: Rooftop Strut Replacement

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

The cam strap is a good idea but also, if you have the roof propped fully open while replacing the struts, then you'll be pulling down against gravity and you only need to shorten the strut a few inches to make the connection. ?If you can get a good grip on the end, then it's possible do it with bare hands.

Re: Disposal of 93 Weekender

All,

Thanks for the advice. As it turns out, due to travel and other factors I won't really have the time to sell or otherwise rid myself of the van until late July. Decisions will be made then and into August.?

In case you are interested in seeing the overall condition, I did upload some current pics of it to Flickr: ?.

Hi Gary,
?
Well, my mechanic used his VagCom to reset the throttle body after my EV started rush like crazy from a stop.....As for the TCU, I¡¯m using this procedure below and it works fine all the time....I even showed that procedure to a member of our Eurovan/Westfalia Group here in Canada whose transmission was always shifting past 3500rpm and it worked for him also...Now it¡¯s shifting near 2800-3000rpm....Here¡¯s the procedure you can try safely:
1-Turn key on (without starting the van)
2-Push gas pedal to the floor 10 sec.
3-Hold gas pedal to the floor and turn key off.
4-Now let go off the gas pedal.
5-Turn key on again for 5 min. (you can be doing something else while waiting)
6-Start the car, touching nothing.
7-Test drive on the road.
***You¡¯ll notice that the gears shift more easily and evenly !!! Let me know the feedback ...

This should help, they show you a setup where you can use some paracord and a ratchet strap to get it compressed and popped in.?

I just did mine last week. I wasn't 'lucky' as the first part of video suggests, so had to ratchet down to get the first one one. Then my second one just popped on pretty easily.?

Okay, I know people have replaced their rooftop lift struts.?

Now it's my turn. I picked up a couple from Bus Depot but found no instructions yet.

Is there a standard jig one can build to safely apply the 100 lbs of force required to compress these things?

Volkswagen has lifted the veil off of the new 2015 California, a camper
van based on the sixth-gen Transporter
<> that
was introduced earlier this year.
Volkswagen offers the California in a variety of configurations in order
to cater to both buyers who plan on using it occasionally and buyers who
plan on living in it as they drive around the globe. The van can be fitted
with a fold-out table, front seats that swivel, a stainless steel sink, a
fridge, a compact two-burner stove and numerous cabinets.

The California comes with a pair of chairs integrated into the hatch and
a small picnic table cleverly hidden in the sliding door. All models
feature a pop-up top (a feature inherited from the Westfalia vans sold from
the 1960s to the 1980s) and a large sun shade.

Currently, the California can only be ordered with a 2.0-liter TDI
four-cylinder turbodiesel engine available with either 83, 100, 147 or 201
horsepower. Volkswagen promises that a 2.0-liter gasoline-burning
four-banger will be added to the lineup before the end of the year.

Front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox come standard. Buyers can order
the California with an automatic dual-clutch transmission, Volkswagen's
4Motion all-wheel drive system or both.

The California is on sale now in its home country of Germany, where it
carries a base price of €41,429 (roughly $46,000).

I had a flat on my right front tire that tore off the right front mudflap and the bumper brace just ahead of the wheel. ?Does anyone have these items to sell.

Re: 2003 EuroVan MV alignment advice needed

Update on my 2003 EuroVan MV alignment: ? I decided to go with the local shop in my town so I could stay in close communication with the tech and keep the costs in check. ?They inspected the tie rods and agree with the VW dealer assessment that the inner tie rods need replacement. ?They also agree though with me that better to do the inner and outer on both sides given the 150K mileage. ?Upon inspection they saw some fluid was leaking fluid at the input shaft ?of the rack which would explain the low level I have seen but was somehow ignoring. I don't think a bad leak but decided to have them replace the rack at the same time as the tie rods. ?They completed that last week and adjusted the toe in/out back to spec. ?They also saw that the camber is off as I had know from the two previous VW dealer diagnostics. ?I asked them to first check and set the ride height before starting to make adjustments in the camber as suggested earlier in this thread. ?The problem the shop ran into ( and I am having as well) is identifying the group number to use for specs. ?I read some of the posts here and saw one from Bob W that this number is the last of the third line of digits in the sticker on the plastic box cover. ?My sticker has "8L1" at the end of the third string.?? I have a Bentley Manual CD for this vehicle but unfortunately it doesn't open on my Macs and my work computer that has Windows 7. Thinking to go to Staples and see if they can read it and print out a copy. ?In the meantime, I would greatly appreciate if anyone can help me confirm that this "8L1" ?makes sense as the group number for a 2003 MV non-weekender and might have access to the ride height and ?alignment settings for this group number so I can double check what the alignment shop is using. ?
I posted a picture of my sticker on the fuse box cover in the PHOTOS section for reference?
Thanks,
Ron?

What error codes have you got when this limp mode happens ? I had limp mode once with my ¡®97EVC...The codes I got on my ScanGuage were all related to solenoids on the valve body....To cure the problem, we cleaned all the pins on different modules, like ABS (Yes, can be related to other modules !!), also the pins on the big plug behind the tranny, and especially inspected the solenoids on the valve body and found the culprit....In fact, one of them was loose in its socket.....So we reinserted it correctly and my mechanic twisted something on it so it cannot come out.....We reprogrammed the TCU and throttle body and that was it !!!.....no more problems with the transmission since then !!! Good luck...
