So what's wrong with BBC Sounds? I'm really not getting this.

Hi Ray

There is one Speech Radio app for Android and one for the iPhone.

I think when BWBF set up BBC on the Sonata they used the higher quality streams. I am hoping that Speech Radio might also use these streams. It should be easier to navigate than BBC Sounds.

Although I have not tried it yet, the description says you can speak or use gestures to access the app. This could be useful for people who find touch screens difficult.

Are you able to add apps to your Synapptic phone?

Pele

Re: [TAVIP] bbc dilivery

Yes Pele, I can add apps, though I still find it rather a pain. Assuming this to be a free app then I do not have to bother about setting up an account to download this app.

I am still psycing myself up to link my Amazon smart speaker to BBC Sounds.? this is down to Synaptic, seemingly installing the Sounds app which bundles with their software to an email address of their choosing which, although a GMail address isn't the one I have used to sign up to Sounds!? so, I am guessing this is why, when my speaker sends a link it in fact opens in the app but without me being able to do anything with it!? Seems an unnecessary mess, but there it is.

Leaves me wondering if indeed we are to be forced down the Sounds route then it should probably be pre-installed on future devices with the password sent to us securely for the times we may need it.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I am an avid radio listener who gets full value from the licence fee.? Anyone needing an easy way to see 4Extrra's schedule for the week ahead could do worse than subscribe to the 4Extra emails that Pele sends out.

Thanks Pele.? Very useful to see this.? I would have caught up with Jackie's post tomorrow as I am on digest mode for that list.

I assume there are two different apps for iPhones and Android phones?? I put the question as Jackie seems to imply the same app is meant to work on both operating systems.

Apologise if I have said this already but my feeling increasingly is that the BBC wants to route everyone who wants to listen to BBC radio through BBC Sounds.

Given the demise of Wireless for Blind Sonata internet radio I am guessing this is some sort of replacement for its radiofunctionality - along with the podcast app on its way. that's ok for people who are used to touch screens but does not address those who are not into swipe and tap interfaces.

In closing I give a brief mention to Qcast for Windows which I have been using for around a year or more now.? Works very well.? Though the website does look rather out-of-date, I assure you the latest version does work on Win10.

(this is a paid for program but costs no more than $20 as I recall.

I received messages both on my plextalk and vrs whilst listening to bbc radio 4 saying that bbc radio is not going to be provided on these devices as well as smart speakers as from mid 2023.

It advises people to contact the manufacturers.

We are advised to use the internet and bbc sounds.

Has anybody else heard of this?.

Surely at least vrs should be updated by then to enable the device to receive bbc sounds.

Any thoughts.

Is there a similar device out there which will receive sounds.

Perhaps you have only just subscribed to this list but I started this
discussion about some of the BBC radio feeds being discontinued. Pele
reported hearing the short message from BBC Sounds while listening via
the standard HW UK playlist, so it is seemingly these feeds as well as
others that Pele has tapped into in creating her own playlists that are
effected.

Humanware say they will address the problem if and when the feeds on the

A brief remark in the messae I got from Humanware sales hinted that
there should be good news next year about a new player development but I

Couple of podcasts worth dropping into

Thought I'd mention two podcasts I listened to last night not long after they had dropped.

First one, Mosen at Large, I've followed for a long time.? As it happens I was listening on my Blindshell Classic 2 phone and one of the features was on the BC2audio book player.? this doesn't presently support DAISY books but Jonathan's demo of downloading, locating and playing books (including Audible) is worth a listen.

Direct link:

the second one is possibly lighter listening.? the British Broadcasting Century.? Unsurprisingly it has a lot to say about one hundred years of the BBC but it is produced outside of the BBC sphere.

A constructively critical discussion with the former presenter of Radio 4's Feedback presenter, roger Bolton,? is part of the latest episode touching on the future of the BBC.

In closing perhaps worth saying that audio players generally are often quite good on phones, whether aimed at the blindness market or not, and a reminder of the competition these days to players in the specialist player market.? One thing missing from specialist players and specialist phones alike is the lack of moving by chapter which, given the length of Jonathan Mosen's offering, is especially anoying.

Don't Panic! Re: [dap-uk] Probability internet players we use will not access BBC streams after mid 2023

This is by way of an apology if anyone has been worried unecessarily about forthcoming BBC Sounds ending of some radio internet feeds.

As Pele reminded me yesterday, she had supplied her playlists of a year or two back which I use on my second Vr player which has trouble with the standard UK playlist in that it hangs up or refuses to load stations when moving around stations.? A second one I have is not nearly so troublesome

On the Trek that works propperly I do NOT get the messages interjected by BBC Sounds, so I must conclude the other playlist I am using compiled from UK radio feeds, is the one using streams the Beeb will discontinue next year.

This is not to say some people might find their radio stations will not play some time next year, but these are probably players that are five years old or older.

I would think those using other players incorporated into Synapptic's software are going to have no problems.? In fact Synapptic does offer BBC Sounds in it installed apps list, but also under the entertainment section access to BBC iPlayer which is devided into radio and TV.? Using this to access radio - and TV of course - does require setting up an account with an email address and password.

My problem linking Alexa to BBC sounds is going to require some searching in Sounds for the solution.? In short, I get a message from Sounds to ender credentials into the two fields, but these are not available for editing!? It would appear that maybe the BBC Sounds app might have to de-activated and re-activated to get access to BBC radio feeds.? What a Phaff!

apologies again to those who may have been caused anxiety over this, but worth bearing in mind that access to BBC and sometimes other radio on the internet is not always problem free.

I am not sure the VR players ever did handle M4a streams all that
well. I think the modems they use just cannot handle the bandwidth.

I suggested in my email to Humanware Sales the VR players are in fact
due a much needed update, but who amongst us is holding their breath?

Hi Ray

Thanks for recording this message about the BBC streams. I listened
to Radio 4 just before 1 PM but did not hear it.

This seems to be the way things are going. Some commercial stations
like Absolute Radio and Planet Rock no longer work on the stream or
the Trek or internet radios as the owners have changed the streams. I
think there is an app for the phone.

Re: BBC Sounds reply, [dap-uk] Probability internet players we use will not access BBC streams after mid 2023

Hi Everyone

Here are two different streams for Radio 4 FM that the Victor Reader Stream will play:

Radio 4 on Humanware Playlist

Radio 4 on the Playlist I made of streams taken from UK Radio Feeds
File5=

I don't think BBC stations are on TuneIn anymore but they might still be onOoTunes, which is the database the Victor Reader Stream uses.

Sorry if I have confused things even more.

Pele

Oh, I was using your playlist Pele, and I still use others you have sent me in the past.

I cannot recall now where you get your URLs used in your playlists, but I have found a couple of sources for finding BBC streams, including some high quality ones, which work on a PC but not at all with the Humanware players.

there is a price for using higher quality streams:? latency. that matters of course should you be joining in a phone in perhaps.

I will give the Humanware playlist another go but I find my players often have difficulty when it comes to moving around quickly to listen to different stations.? I all too often get the "please waite" message, and often stations will not load repeatedly.

I do not think there is a problem with my Wi-Fi or internet connection as I know it is almost as good as it gets for a connection that's not at the moment fibre to the home.

Hi Ray

Just a thought, were you listening to Radio 4 using the Humanware playlist or the playlist I made? I have just checked and the URLs are different.
