Re: Probability internet players we use will not access BBC streams after mid 2023

Hi Ray,

The way BBC is going at the moment is nothing short of ridiculous. For example, they now put out their Moneybox podcast to regular podcast clients 28 days later than it appears on Sounds, at which point, a lot of it is out of date.

I am going off the BBC at a rate of knots.

All the best

Steve

I cannot begin to answer the question of whether In Touch will look into this looming ceasing of the lower quality BBC .mp3 streams made available for older internet radio devices and some smart phones and tablets.

I certainly do not want to phase or panic people on this subject, but I will put the question (if I can) to BBC Sounds and drop a line to In Touch as well.

If I am around my VR player I will press record at just before the hour to hear if any more pop-up announcements come through. If I can record one of these then that would be some evidence of what I am going on about.

Sorry if necessary for cross-posting - and about the rather long subject, and this might not be exactly the right list to bring it up.

In short, some of us will be crying Help! soon, to do things the BBC
Sounds way.

On my VR Stream just before 2Pm - and cutting into the end credits for
the American local elections series - an announcement came to my VR
Trek that after mid 2023 "the stream you are listening on will no
longer work..." - or words to that effect. From then onwards it would
seem all streaming will have to be via BBC Sounds.

I am guessing most if not all specialist players we use depend on
these lower quality streams at present. So, will there be a way
around this change?

Presently the VR stream and most if not all phone apps that come with
Synapptic the Blind Shell 2 and possibly other smart phones are set up
to use these streams. I am guessing, but don't actually know, that
when BBC Sounds becomes the sole way of accessing live radiothen many
will find some sort of update to radio features on these devices wil
be needed, and worse, a pretty expensive upgrade to new hardware.

Do I hear some screaming, Get an Amazon speaker! I have one, and so
far I have monumentally failed to connect to BBC sounds using my
Synapptic phone with its installed Alexa app - which also has BBC
sounds app on it too. No doubt if I do not solve that problem soon I
shall be calling on someone for Help!

In short, a cumbersome work-around must be in the offing, if not
forking out for another device?

Ray.

I Guess that price of $75 Australian would equate to more than ?150 in the UK were it to be sold here.

Not altogether clear if it has a USB port for whatever purpose.? I could see its apeal as a very portable personal player.

Hi Ray. I noticed you have a phone with synaptic software please would it be possible for me to communicate with you privately. As I don't have many friends who use synaptic software. My email address is mrsvilla@... what you said here is quite concerning. It's not very good if devices can't access BBC Radio. Hopefully the companies that do blind technology will find a way round it. Best Mrs Villa

Hi Ray

?

Because there are so many players around now, it is difficult keeping up with them all. I wonder if anyone has any information or leaflets they want to share on here. Don¡¯t forget though we don¡¯t allow attachments, perhaps we can upload them to the group files section so you can all download them. ?

Thanks Marvin for giving more info on this player.

Would be nice to know the purchase price if available in the UK - not that I intend buying one.

A fact sheet on the various players wouldn't come amiss for me as there are a few more of them on the market now which it would appear handle DAISY as well as other formats.

Did have a dasi cd player before they were going not do books on that any more. And wanted something small, good audio quality and portable. Not finger positive. And not very finger mobile. So a smart phone out of the question, did not want a victor reader with all the bells and whistles. Just some thing simple.

It wouldn't be too difficult to manufacture a player similar to those of Kings Access in terms of actually doing it, but it's the return we would get on it that may be the problem.

Steve and all,

This is a vexed question indeed, re. the price of players.

Some TNs might afford ?70 to ?80 but certainly not all.

Mnowing listeners and our community as I do I know not many would be prepared to chip in a part of that cost. That could lead us down the road of talking about preparedeness to pay for such things which, in the end, would lead us nowhere.

I still tend to think that if only Wireless for Blind, RNIB, TNF and possibly others would agree to co-operate then a higher volume order for manufacture could be placed. Still, the design stage alone is the first possible flaw in that suggestion, and we could end up with a player that does not satisfy many and end up with something like the committee set up to design a horse which came up with the Camel!

In this age of individualism and everyone doing their own thing I wonder we end up with much of anything that could sensibly meet the needs of the mass of listeners.

The RNIB offering who's name I cannot recall has been found wanting

I have been involved in local TN production for more than 20 years so
know the problem well. So many of the readers are of pension age and

I often wish a player produced in large numbers to meet basic needs
could be designed and procured by a consortium of information

But I think the limiting factor is price. I don't think TNs could pay over 70 or 80 quid a player for example. I honestly believe that the reason Kings Access went down, or one of them, is that they under priced their devices, because it's such a small market.

Many will know the Kings audio Sovriegn players are no longer
availableand a replacement is being saught urgently by many talking
newspapers. Anyone know of an easy to use tactile player that might
be substituted for the Sovreign?

The RNIB offering who's name I cannot recall has been found wanting
but maybe due an upgrade to meet the needs of TNs.

I have been involved in local TN production for more than 20 years so
know the problem well. So many of the readers are of pension age and
often much older and resistant to anything needing some learning to
get used to.

I often wish a player produced in large numbers to meet basic needs
could be designed and procured by a consortium of information

happen. Much better would be a player that could access online

Re: USB players for talking newspapers etcetra

Hi,

To be honest, I don't think the Zenstone is what people want. It doesn't have speakers for example, and the buttons are not big enough for the elderly and less dexterous of us.

Hi Ray and Steve

I have an old zenstone mp3 player, they are very easy to use, I wonder if something like that could be adapted for the older population, just convert it to take a micro sd card or something. When the zenstone came out they were selling on play.com which is obviously no longer running for around ?14. Just a thought.

Hi Ray,

It wouldn't be too difficult to manufacture a player similar to those of Kings Access in terms of actually doing it, but it's the return we would get on it that may be the problem.

Re: USB players for talking newspapers etcetra

Hi Ray

I have the zenstone here and although it is very small, it would have enough storage to put a talking news paper on it but obviously not much else. I tried one of the new solo bluetooth products but was not impressed with it. it is a pity you cannot try before you buy. When the rnib had the old original tb service when they loaned us the players, they obviously funded them, it is a shame these big vi charities cannot all work this out between them, it would benefit a lot of people.

Adrian, a new player aimed at TN listeners would have to be one taking standard USB pendrives. the lack of dexterity of many listeners would be prevent us using SD or micro SD card, which in any case would get lost easily, as indeed do USB sticks.

I might have one of those old Zen players around somewhere. They were very nifty and although I do not extol the virtues of something to go in the shirt pocket, they were very pocketable!

This is a small dasi player with a 25 gb or maybe higher sd card slot. Simple interface. And it beeps when the battery is low. Has a solar panel on the back, has a usb cable and comes with the I access software for vision Australia in Australia. Cost me $75 to purchase. Nice sound, and when the book is finished, hold the volume and bookshelf button down together
