Hi everyone!
?
I wanted to quickly poll all of you here to know what you'd like to see in future updates on the Stream 3.
?
We already have some things in the works, of course, but I like to keep my finger on the pulse of what you all would like to see to better inform our roadmap.
?
It can be something as big as a new service (like TuneIn, for example), or a small as an improvement to a feature (having the ability to use categories in notes, for example, although this last one is already being worked on!)
?
I'd love to see some answers from people who have a Stream 3, but also from people who don't, to learn what it would take for you to upgrade your Stream 2!
?
Looking forward to reading your answers!

Hello!

We're looking for a few new beta testers for the Stream 3.

Criteria to join:

1- Comfortable with technology: you will have to update your Stream 3 using an SD card and downloading builds via a web link. We want people who are comfortable doing this.?

2- Agree to provide feedback in a constructive manner: alpha and beta builds can be sometimes a bit unstable. Don't expect it to be perfect. You will have to provide feedback including steps to reproduce the issue, the build version you're running, and send us logs.

3- Agree to confidentiality: Do not discuss the beta versions, either in general or specific terms, with anyone.

4- Be a Stream 3 owner: we will not be providing units for this beta.

5- Technical support: our tech support team does not offer tech support on beta units. If you call in with a beta version, they will refuse to help. If you need to contact support about an issue unrelated to beta, please roll back to a current "normal" build using the links on our support page.

If you are interested in joining (places are limited!), please email me at mathieu.paquette [at] humanware.com .

Note that we do not have any ongoing beta right now, but we'll have one in the coming weeks.

Chris Nova

Going to the download page the tutorial version info says:

?Last Updated November 13, 2023

there is a DAISY version there also.

Finally, I updated to the latest minor firmware update this morning, though I had to go into the settings to initiate the download.

Hi Matthew

?

that’s understandable, it was a big up-date.

?

I have had a couple of problems, when I installed the update this morning, my wifi wouldn’t start, I went to settings and tried to launch it but it said wifi manager has crashed and I had to restart my stream, it seems ok now but may be something up set things a bit.

?

I can’t work out how to shut the stream down when it is in suspend mode, I press shut down now but nothing happens, the stream just freezes. I have to use the power button to turn it off. ???

Yes. The reason why 1.2 to 1.3 had to put back default voices is because we updated the Acapela engine between both from versions. 1.3.1 has no engine update.

Thanks for forwarding.

For myself I will not bother as since the last update the bookshelves are loading OK, especially in suspend mode, ?and I do not access DOD European Newspapers.

Normally I would keep up to date anyway, but on the last update I had to download the Peter voice again, and also have now downloaded Lucy.

Presumably, if applying this update, I would have to download each voice yet again?

This makes me think I should only apply relevant more major updates.

Hello everyone!

Version 1.3.1 of the Stream 3 is now available. You can manually check for update on your Stream 3, or simply reboot, to receive the update.

This hotfix includes a fix to the issue some people had when more than a few hundred folders are present in either the internal memory or the SD card and was causing the offline bookshelf not to load.

There are also 2 minor fixes to newspapers delivered through DOD in Sweden and the Netherlands.

Here are the links to download the update manually should you need it.

It was suggested that I share this post I made to TAVIP here.
With all the discussion about access to Audible content I thought it was
worth informing people about another accessible, non-DRM? protected Audio
book Service.
As I previously reported, I already have accounts with Libro.FM? and Audio
Books Guild, both of? which provide access to downloading? their Audio books
in mp3 format. Audio Book Guild offer no plans or credits and only allow
download in
mp3 for 14 days after purchase. They almost exclusively provide books in the
Fantasy, Sci Fi and Adult Erotica Genre. Libro have a wider catalogue as
well as providing a credit plan.

Today I took out a Free Trial Membership to a further Audio Book provider.
This is called Audio Book Now.
This does not use a credits scheme, but does offer discounts on books to
members. You only get the discounts if signed up as a member,? and, As far
as I can tell, it is completely accessible with easy download of your
purchases in
mp3 from your library. I downloaded my first book today without issue.
You can pay for both books and membership by PayPal to add some extra
security.
Some books will be very cheap and some less so. On first impression it is
competitive with Audible prices.
With the $4.99 plan you will get rights to a free book from a selected list,
these? books tend to be quite short, 50% off any book you purchase from the
main catalogue, with further discounts for further purchases.
Below are details of my plan and link to the website.
Thank you for signing up for the Audiobooks Now Club Pricing Plan. Details
of your plan are listed below:

Monthly Club Pricing Plan

Trial Period: 30 day free trial ($4.99/month thereafter)

Monthly Billing Day: 5
---------------------------------------
If you do not deactivate your Club Pricing Plan by the end of your free
trail, your card will be charged $4.99/month until the plan is deactivated.
To deactivate your plan, simply click on the "Deactivate Monthly Club
Pricing"
button in your account at our website.

Your Club Pricing Plan benefits include:
.?????? 50% off your first audiobook each month
.?????? 35-40% off everything else you purchase
.?????? A free premium audiobook (select titles only)
.?????? 50% discounts roll over to the next month
.?????? Access to exclusive discounts and offers
.?????? Unlimited access to Sleep & Meditation content
.?????? Double reward points for credit back
.?????? Loyalty program that offers free months
.?????? No long-term commitments, cancel anytime

Audio Book Now

It was suggested that I share this post I made to TAVIP here.
With all the discussion about access to Audible content I thought it was worth
informing people about another accessible, non-DRM protected Audio book
Service.
As I previously reported, I already have accounts with Libro.FM and Audio Books
Guild, both of which provide access to downloading their Audio books in mp3
format. Audio Book Guild offer no plans or credits and only allow download in
mp3 for 14 days after purchase. They almost exclusively provide books in the
Fantasy, Sci Fi and Adult Erotica Genre. Libro have a wider catalogue as well as
providing a credit plan.

Today I took out a Free Trial Membership to a further Audio Book provider.
This is called Audio Book Now.
This does not use a credits scheme, but does offer discounts on books to
members. You only get the discounts if signed up as a member, and, As far as I
can tell, it is completely accessible with easy download of your purchases in
mp3 from your library. I downloaded my first book today without issue.
You can pay for both books and membership by PayPal to add some extra security.
Some books will be very cheap and some less so. On first impression it is
competitive with Audible prices.
With the $4.99 plan you will get rights to a free book from a selected list,
these books tend to be quite short, 50% off any book you purchase from the main
catalogue, with further discounts for further purchases.
Below are details of my plan and link to the website.
Thank you for signing up for the Audiobooks Now Club Pricing Plan. Details of
your plan are listed below:

Monthly Club Pricing Plan

Trial Period: 30 day free trial ($4.99/month thereafter)

Monthly Billing Day: 5
---------------------------------------
If you do not deactivate your Club Pricing Plan by the end of your free trail,
your card will be charged $4.99/month until the plan is deactivated.

Recording on the VR3

I found a little earlier today I am able to record radio programmes on the VR3 as I used to do on my VR trek.? I had thought recording was pretty well broken on the previous versions of the VR3 firmware but I find now that recording from my old playlists which have a good number of community and commercial stations that this works still as it should.

More than this though even the 60 odd stations in the UK Humanware playlist which has all the BBC feeds works too.? I had thought this might not be the case as the recording you get on the older .mp3 streams seems to mirror the sample-bit rate of the station being recorded.? I have yet to look at what format the BBC stations end up as, but recording stream live can be useful at times when you want to catch something on the fly.? I coul could wish the Stream could buffer recordings in a sort of standby mode, but that would be asking too much!

Apart from the VR Stream cutting out for no apparant reason earlier today I have as yet found no serious bugs to report.

Ray.

Very interesting remarks you make David regarding the unsatisfactory terms of service imposed by Audible and the remark about Kindle Books made by someone else.? I hear of people who seem to devour Kindle Books on their iPads and the like but imagine they would not be slow in condemning Kindle were they to use access to their libraries.

You might David post a message here you sent to TAVIP on another audio book service, Audio Book Now. along with other publishers of audio books.? Its good to know of other guys on the block, so to speak.

Having read all the comments here, I would be tempted to give Open Audible a go, but the unfare prractices of Amazon and the like always leave one open to the sorts of corporate abuse many complain of.

Ray.

Thanks David for the explanation of installing and using Audible which I might now go and investigate now the VR3 at last does support Audible officially.

?

I am somewhat bemuzed by Adrian's mention of Open Audible.? Is there a catch to using this?? If its as straightforward as indicated then perhaps many are using Open Audible already?

?

Hard to see the advantage of standby or suspend mode.? I'd have thought all that's needed is for the VR3 to turn off automatically after a given time which could be adjusted in settings.

?

My final thought which in fact I've had for a while is that HumanWare seem somewaht overstretched when it comes to devoting time and resources to bringing the VR3 to the point it should have been at from the start.? Could it be their development resources are spread too thin, what with its involvement with the monach Braille tablet display and all the clever things it can do?? There is also ongoing releases of magnification and easy conveneient reading solutions which allow quick reading of print documents? So I suspect the time needed to bring the VR3 to the stage its in now has been curtailed by development efforts elsewhere and the result is the reputation of HW providing a much respected audio reader for book lovers and easy podcast and radio access has been somewhat dented.?? A worthwhile market I'd say not withstanding the contant reminders from some quarters of the virtues of the do it all smart phone.

Dear Ray

I will not be personally using the Audible feature but as I understand it.

  1. Download Audible Sync to your computer from

Install Audible Sync and log in with your Audible credentials. Some users report having to close and restart the app to successfully complete this process.

  1. Connect your Stream 3 to your computer and make sure it is turned on. Then find the option to activate device from within the Audible Sync app. With this new process it is the Stream itself rather than SD card which is activated.
  2. Then as I understand it you can download and transfer Audible Books to your connected Stream for playing. If it is like the VR 2 and additional Audible Bookshelf ?will appear on the Stream in offline mode.

Hope that helps.

I installed the update yesterday which took a fair time and I was struck by the lack of announcements of the download progress though I was told of installation progress.

?

I see from the announcement that the latest version of AudibleSync should be downloaded to enable Audible book support.? Wonder if anyone can point me to a source telling me how to enable and use Audible on the VR Stream 3?? I might now be interested in buying some Audible titles.

?

What a pity we cannot access RNIB Talking Books on the VR3 - or any other specailist player for that matter.? Not much inclined to go the Dolphin Easy Reader route which I think is the only option open to us for listening on phones and the like.? Of course I could do this on my PC and a reminder of the URL for the RNIB download service would be nice to have if anyone would provide it.? The link I have seems to refer to books to order rather than to download.

?

How depressing it is that so many countries seem to support the download of audio books from their national libraries - but not the UK.? Just one more reason I feel I am living in a NAF country.
