Re: [Tech-VI] For Users of the Victor Reader Stream 3: Version 1.3 is now available!

Hi David

?

Agreed and going on the huge number of posts on the victor group regarding the problems with audible sink and connecting different gadgets to audible when there is a far simpler way of getting those books and I must add that a lot of the books I read are from audible and are shared in various different ways, I can’t be hassled to try and connect my vr stream to audible, it is so easy to use open audible and just copy the books to my sd card. For some people things are over complicated, its great having the facilities on the devices to give me the choice but not when it can be broken so easily in an up-date or by audible themselves if they so choose. So many people want audible on their stream but it is too fiddly. Having it on our phones is easier because you can just log-in and away you go. Incidentally, I read my books on my stream or evo but not on my phones. ????

The main reason I use Open Audible? ?is for Access reasons. Unless I can amplify these books, they are literally unlistenable for me.

However, the whole Audible model irks me for other reasons. Over more than a decade I have quote “bought” nearly 600 books from Audible, yet I currently own none of them. At any time, Amazon could decide they no longer want me as a customer and I would lose rights to all these purchases, with no rights in their terms and conditions to access them. Similarly, if I die, not inconceivable at my age, ???????all my investment in Amazon digital media, both Kindle and Audible disappear, according to their terms, ?into smoke with no rights of inheritance for anybody for the thousands of pounds I have invested over the last 20 years or so.

So we are unacceptably vulnerable to Amazon in any dispute, and we are completely unable to will our investments to others in the way other purchases ?can be included in an Estate.

Hi Ray

It connects to the audible folder or library so it must be official, I find it much easier, open the open audible program, it’ll ask you to log-in and make sure it is on mp3 and the program does the rest, it downloads the books, converts them and puts them in a folder under c:\user\account name and open audible\books. To me it is a lot less hassle than it seems to be with audible sinc, they seem to be have millions of problems with it. With open audible it is demo but only $19 for as long as you need it, ?17 or something like that.

  1. Connect your Stream 3 to your computer and make sure it is turned on. Then find the option to activate device from within the Audible Sync app. With this new process it is the Stream itself rather than SD card which is activated.

Re: [Tech-VI] For Users of the Victor Reader Stream 3: Version 1.3 is now available!

Hi David

This is why I use OpenAudible or InAudible to download Audible books. Once they are downloaded and copied it does not matter what happens to Audible, because I have them in MP3 format.

I will not buy Kindle books any more as I cannot convert them to .txt files.

I agree David, and like all successful monopolies, or near monopolies, there's no place else to go.? How I wish this sort of licencing restrictive practice could be internatinally outlawed, but that is like doing unpleasant things into the wind!

There has been some mention of on a few other lists too about the book Pirate of the Airwaves by Roger Day with its ability to be read on smart phones and the rest being disabled.? In my view that should not be an option for authors or publishers.

Ray.

This unacceptable situation is empowered by Audibles near monopoly position in the Audio Book market, with only small inroads? made by more ethical companies like Libro.Fm.

Interesting to have confirmation that Open Audible is unofficial.? I can see why people use and like it, but I think I'd rather go the official route, but yet to see how well it works, and I have also to explore what Audible offers and would be interested to know of folks? experience with Audible and avoiding having books de-activated as I believe some have experienced.

On a different subject, and one that could have a thread of its own, I notice the VR3 has imported podcast feeds from the podcasts I was subscribed to on my old Victor Trek.? Anyone else seen this happen?

Dear Ray

I will not be personally using the Audible feature but as I understand it.

  1. Download Audible Sync to your computer from

Install Audible Sync and log in with your Audible credentials. Some users report having to close and restart the app to successfully complete this process.

  1. Connect your Stream 3 to your computer and make sure it is turned on. Then find the option to activate device from within the Audible Sync app. With this new process it is the Stream itself rather than SD card which is activated.
  2. Then as I understand it you can download and transfer Audible Books to your connected Stream for playing. If it is like the VR 2 and additional Audible Bookshelf ?will appear on the Stream in offline mode.

Hope that helps.

Hi Claire

I don’t remember that function, but to actually jump several books at once would be good.

Hi Adrien,

With the Stream 2, you could press and hold key 4 and 6 in a list of files to jump 10 files at a time . Don't know if this still works on Stream 3.

Great to hear of all the new updates of the Stream 3.

Hi Matthew

?

I like the update, it has made a big difference and it definitely is much quicker at reading the sd card.

?

What would be useful is a function where you can jump 10 or more books at a time if you have a lot of books on an sd card, I know you can go to book and give a number but another option would be useful. I like the vr stream 3, it can only but get better. Keep up the good work.

?

When you have the stream in suspend mode, the shut down now function seems to crash a bit, not sure, I have only tried it a couple of times. The stream seems to freeze up. How do you cancel the shut down now if you want to cancel it?

Hi Ray

Open audible isn’t talked about as much as audible sink but I prefer it, just my choice, it is easier, no messing around connecting gadgets to audible.

?

The suspend feature is great, the stream wakes up straight away and you don’t need to scan the sd card again.

Thanks David for the explanation of installing and using Audible which I might now go and investigate now the VR3 at last does support Audible officially.

?

I am somewhat bemuzed by Adrian's mention of Open Audible.? Is there a catch to using this?? If its as straightforward as indicated then perhaps many are using Open Audible already?

?

Hard to see the advantage of standby or suspend mode.? I'd have thought all that's needed is for the VR3 to turn off automatically after a given time which could be adjusted in settings.

?

My final thought which in fact I've had for a while is that HumanWare seem somewaht overstretched when it comes to devoting time and resources to bringing the VR3 to the point it should have been at from the start.? Could it be their development resources are spread too thin, what with its involvement with the monach Braille tablet display and all the clever things it can do?? There is also ongoing releases of magnification and easy conveneient reading solutions which allow quick reading of print documents? So I suspect the time needed to bring the VR3 to the stage its in now has been curtailed by development efforts elsewhere and the result is the reputation of HW providing a much respected audio reader for book lovers and easy podcast and radio access has been somewhat dented.?? A worthwhile market I'd say not withstanding the contant reminders from some quarters of the virtues of the do it all smart phone.

Re: [Tech-VI] For Users of the Victor Reader Stream 3: Version 1.3 is now available!

I installed the update yesterday which took a fair time and I was struck by the lack of announcements of the download progress though I was told of installation progress.

?

I see from the announcement that the latest version of AudibleSync should be downloaded to enable Audible book support.? Wonder if anyone can point me to a source telling me how to enable and use Audible on the VR Stream 3?? I might now be interested in buying some Audible titles.

?

What a pity we cannot access RNIB Talking Books on the VR3 - or any other specailist player for that matter.? Not much inclined to go the Dolphin Easy Reader route which I think is the only option open to us for listening on phones and the like.? Of course I could do this on my PC and a reminder of the URL for the RNIB download service would be nice to have if anyone would provide it.? The link I have seems to refer to books to order rather than to download.

?

How depressing it is that so many countries seem to support the download of audio books from their national libraries - but not the UK.? Just one more reason I feel I am living in a NAF country.

?

Ray.

To be honest, EasyReader on your phone is the best way to get RNIB books. You can literally search from the phone and download it.

I’m personally done with specialist players.

All the best
