Bill, isn't your wiring diagram missing some wires to terminal 1 and 4? I don't see how throwing the switch would reverse a motor. Ralph

I do sharpening of various blade tools, using a Tormek T8.? Belt grinder is a modified Viel, 1x42.? I use the Viel mainly as a heavy metal remover, then move to the T8 for bevel refinement and

It works nicely.? I've done this for my belt grinder using with a 1/2hp version of this variable speed brushed DC motor ( https://www.pennstateind.com/store/TCLVSKIT2.html ) where I added the DPDT

Absolutely would find a spring that offers more tension ....more pressure to the ball.? The spring has almost certainly lost some strength over the decades.

Ok...so someone has to say it....that design has worked perfectly fine for decades ......on tens of thousand of lathes. So.....if it were me....I would focus solely on determining what has changed
