The question then becomes ... how...?? Don't want to destroy whatever is retaining the ball at the ID.? Drill out from the OD to expose the spring behind the ball.? Then how to close that opening

I would replace the ball and spring first. I have this lathe and have lost the ball and found one close that works.

I tried that group first, when I first got this lathe, last summer.? Lots, if not all have or are familiar with the 6" lathes.? Apparently I was not compatible, didn't make it though the new member

Thanks, difficult relating without having one nearby or having had one.? Thanks for your interest.? I looked at those tubes.? One at least shows how the drive coupler works, but does not show it

Neither.? Only one ball, total.? That one ball is shifted from the inner groove on the spindle to the outer groove when the drive coupler is moved from the "engaged" position locking the spindle

Found a better end mill, more full diameter shank, if I remove the plastic ring.

Regarding doing anything with the spring, stretching or replacing, getting it out and being able to get it back together appear to be the unknown. There is only one ball detent.? I expected to find
