Re: Paint choices
开云体育I went with Rustoleum Light Machine Grey spray paint. I stripped my Craftsman down to bare metal, then two coats of Rustoleum grey primer and two coats of Light Machine Grey.?Follow the can directions, then let the second finish coat hardened for two weeks before assembly.? Re: Atlas 10” lathe

--Hi William, I'm maybe 75 miles east of the Falls, around Rochester NY.? There's one listed in the area right now for $1250.?
?
I routinely search Craigslist in a 100 mile radius of Rochester (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse) and the prices are in the range Will gave, $US. Also dependent on what tooling is included.? The one I shared has a fair amount of tooling., ie the milling attachment alone, to the right person, might sell for $100-$200 on it's own.? On CL if the price is a super deal, it's gone with in hours, OK deal maybe a few days, a little high it sits for awhile.? This one has been listed for about a month.?

Re: Atlas 10” lathe
I bought a lathe nearly identical to that one (model TH54, Timken spindle bearings, Horizontal countershaft, 54" bed. The model number is on the tailstock end of the bed), about a year and a half ago from near Peterborough, ON. I got a decent selection of accessories with it (change gears, steady rest, a couple small boxes of HSS tooling, spindle and tailstock Jacobs's chuck, wood turning tool rest, lantern tool holders and tool post, 4 jaw chuck, dead centers, some boring bars, and wood turning chisels) for $600 CAD. That was a particularly good deal though.

In Ontario, it seems pretty common for 10" Atlas lathes listed for $1000-$1200, so I'd think that probably sell for $800-$1000 without having to sit on it too long. If you're willing to wait longer and depending on the accessories, you might be able to get more. Will On Apr 17, 2025, at 9:25 AM, William Easby via groups.io <ballucanb7@...> wrote: |

Re: Atlas Lathe FS Reno Nv CL
Please keep in mind the differences in spindle register diameters between the Atlas and South Bend lathes. ?
?
While they're both are threaded 1 1/2-8, the spindle register diameter on South Bends is 1.510" (IIRC) while the Atlas is 1.500".
?
For best accuracy, the fit of the chuck's back plate ON THE REGISTER DIAMETER is very important. ?If you buy a 1 1/2-8 pre-threaded back plate,
almost certainly it will be bored to fit a South Bend spindle. This means you will have .010" clearance at the register diameter. ? This results in the plate being radially located on the spindle threads, and not on the register diameter. ?
?
I discovered this on my Jacobs spindle chuck which was bored to fit a South Bend. ?Had to bore out that diameter, press in a ring bushing, and bore it to 1.5005" to properly fit the Atlas spindle.?
?
Edit: ?I also have a 9 X 30 South Bend lathe but it has a worn out bed. ?This example's register measures 1.510" ?My Atlas chucks won't thread up to the shoulder due to the larger register diameter. ?If I ever do get it up and running, I plan on turning down the register to 1.500 so I can interchange spindle mounted tooling. |

Regardless of how you buy the backplate (by itself, or in the same box with a chuck), you still have to turn the backplate, to ensure true running ON YOUR lathe.?
So, it is not a big?deal to purchase the two separately.?

Actually, 1 1/2 x 8 is such a common size they actually do sell chucks with a backplate that is pre-threaded.

The backplate is a separate item that you buy or you make. Nobody sells new chucks with a backplate because they don't know what lathe you have.?
Go to littlemachineshop.com and buy a backplate for about 30 bucks (for 4") or up, then turn it to match your spindle and chuck and you are done.?
As for the chuck, just do a search on eBay for K72-xxx where xxx is the diameter in millimeters. So, it is 100mm for 4", 125 for 5" and 150 for 6" chucks. The prices I found with great ease start at $59 and go up from there.
Instead of complaining about it, just do the legwork. I spoon fed you all the information you need to find your chuck/plate combo.?

Show me even one for 60 bucks...or even $100...that has a threaded back plate!

Ebay is full of 5-inch 4-jaw chucks at aroudn 60 bucks and they are new at that price. Find one that matches your spindle.?
Even if it were 100 bucks, it still beats making your own.?
The cost of materials alone will cost more than that, unless you chose to make a chuck out of mystery steel and not harden the jaws.?
But that would not be a chuck, it would be just a worthless chuck-shaped object.?

Where did you find a new replacement 4-jaw chuck for $60? Besides that, making your own would certainly be good practice. :)

The current Machinist's Workshop has a DIY 4-jaw chuck. Might be an option for cheap bastriches like me. :)?
