cartridge format
7
Which cartridge is it? This doesn’t look like RAM4, it is ROM, so of course it can’t be formatted. And how could you replace battery? There’s no battery in ROM cartridge as you can see. Or do you mean battery in DX7? It was not the best idea to connect the cartridge without the box. Maybe you have connected it opposite side, so you could destroy it.

Breath Controllers
7
Hey, folks. I'm on the hunt for a breath controller. And they're proving to be elusive. I've found references to the Yamaha BC1 through BC3, though that was a single link, but they all seem to be both pricey and also discontinued. Anyone know where I can find one at a decent price? It doesn't have to be made by Yamaha, it just has to be able to turn an air stream into CC2 and plug in using a miniphone connection to my DX7IIFD or K2600XE. It'd also be nice to know if anyone is still making them. I'm working on a book on MIDI, and I'd like to be able to point my readers in a good direction to find one should they want to. Thanks, Nicole Sent from my HAL 9000 in transit to Jupiter

What price a DX1?
5
Today I noticed a listing of a Yamaha DX1 on Ebay for the bewildering price of AUD$213,084.39. A two followed by FIVE zeroes. Is the polyphonic aftertouch a justification for such a whopping price? What other advantages have the DX1 over, say, the DX7IIFD? Easy editing? You could use the CX5M's DX7 editor cartridge on the cheap.

Rx11 no sound
10
Video ( https://imgur.com/a/YHm4Wbz ) Rx11 no sound. I cleaned the keys, replaced the battery, still no sound. I've tried factory settings and self-test mode, still no sound. Can you provide a little clue? It's a miracle that I don't have any repair experience. It turns out that broken transformer windings can cause a machine to have no sound. My transformer had been hurt by the previous owner and had 3 broken wires, which I carefully connected with tin solder, and the unthinkable happened - I heard sound. Thank you all for your enthusiasm.

TX802 troubleshooting
46
Hello group, I would like to share a troubleshooting story I am in the middle of. I bought a broken TX802 on the internet. I knew it was broken when I bought it, I felt like taking a chance. The seller said it worked but has "digital noise". It turns out this TX802 is in pretty good shape. Everything works except that the sounds are wrong. There appears to be something wrong with the output levels of the operators. If I make an init sound, I am supposed to get a single operator sine wave with an organ envelope. The user interface shows the expected parameters. But when I play it, I get more or less the sound of algorithm 1 with all operators at 99. A harsh overmodulated FM sound. When I then change the algorithm to 32, I get a clean sine wave sound. It's a fascinating puzzle for me. Almost all the explanations I can come up with would make the TX sound more broken than it actually does. The EGM and OPS2 chips cannot be broken because they can make clean sounds. (I have a DX7II which is my reference.) Data is getting corrupted only in a very specific place, which happens to affect the output levels. My best guess at the moment is that there is a problem with the chip enable line of the EGM chip that causes it to latch bad output level data when it should not be reading data in the first place. But I have not seen evidence of that yet on my oscilloscope. I don't know if anyone else finds this interesting, but if there is someone who finds it interesting, they are probably on this list. :) Cheers, Jacob

V50 bug (or feature?) in ROM V1.1
5
Hello, I am the happy, and quite recent, owner of a Yamaha V50. I bought it from the first-hand owner, and the instrument is in near-perfect condition. I am using it to create live music, in tandem with an external sequencer - a Squarp Pyramid, to be precise - but my issue should definitely be visible with other sequencers as well! So it is a DAW-less setup, and I will try to describe it now. I am using only the V50 and the sequencer, no other piece of gear. The V50 is acting as "master keyboard", meaning that I set "LOCAL" to "Off" in the MIDI settings, and use the keyboard of the V50 to send the note informations to the sequencer. Then the sequencer feeds back the V50 with the note information (both simultaneous, and recorded), and the V50 acts as a multi-timbral instrument, playing different MIDI tracks simultaneously. Of course, I am connecting them by MIDI DIN cables, one cable for each direction. Now to my particular issue with this setup. There are several ways to use the Pyramid sequencer; the way I am using it is by recording different phrases into tracks by changing the track on the master keyboard. I am not touching the sequencer; the sequencer is recording on all tracks simultaneously, and I actually use a footswitch to activate/deactivate recording. Although the sequencer is listening to the 16 MIDI channels, I am sending information to only one MIDI channel; and to choose that channel, I switch the MIDI channel on the master keyboard itself. So in the case of the V50, I am actually changing the MIDI channel named "TCh" in the MIDI settings; Tch could stand for Transmitting Channel I suppose! When doing so, the synth part of the V50 - the sound generators - actually shuts off at once the very moment I am changing the channel. Of course, it is not very nice when several parts are playing, and they all shut up at once. At least, the music keeps on playing with the next NOTE ON messages coming in, but the resulting sound is definitely not very musical. I think it weird that the sound generator should stop when switching the Tch channel, especially with LOCAL set to Off. I think that maybe, Yamaha engineers where thinking in the context of LOCAL being on, that in the case that a musician switches channels before letting go or some notes, then the NOTE OFF messages would go to the wrong track, and the notes would be stuck. (I haven't seen a feature in the V50 to stop stuck notes, by the way...) This is why I am referring in the title of this message to a possible feature. Now, my ROM version is 1.1. I understand that the latest ROM is 1.3. And so, naturally, I am wondering whether this latest ROM features the same bug/feature, or not. I am referring to the firmware as "ROM", but I have no actual idea whether it is an EPROM or a "mask ROM"; and whether it is socketed or soldered to the board; since I haven't tried opening my V50 yet. Does anybody know how V1.3 behaves with regard to stopping all notes of the sound engine? Thank you for reading, Yann

Controller assignment in DX7 family
8
Among Yamaha's 6-operator FM synths I have found 4 different ways of assigning controllers to various functions (e.g. pitch modulation depth for the mod wheel). 1. DX7 Mark I Function parameter changes (F0 43 1n 08) 2a. TX7/TX816 Performance bulk dump (F0 43 0n 01) 2b. TX7/TX816 Performance parameter changes (F0 43 1n 04) 2c. TX7/TX816 64-Performance bulk dump (F0 43 0n 02) (These synths also receive 1.) 3a. DX7II/DX7S/TX802 ACED (single-voice supplement) bulk dump (F0 43 0n 05) 3b. DX7II/DX7S/TX802 ACED parameter changes (F0 43 1n 18) 3c. DX7II/DX7S/TX802 AMEM (32-voice supplement) bulk dump (F0 43 0n 06) 4a. DX200/PLG150DX XG multi-part bulk dump (F0 43 0n 4C LL LL 08 0p nn) 4b. DX200/PLG150DX XG parameter changes (F0 43 1n 4C 08 0p nn) (These synths do not use the controller-assign parameters in 3a.) The Java program in dx7param.zip in the Files section generates 1. before 2a./3a. so the same bulk dump can be used for both DX7 Mark I (with channel changed by the Java program in dx7chan.zip) and either DX7II or TX7. For 4a./4b. use an XG editor such as: XGC (free from www.midiox.com, base XG + DB50XG/SW60XG/MU10 2-element voice loader) XG-Gold (base XG + QS300/DB50XG/SW60XG/MU10 4-element voice editor) XG-Wizard (SW1000XG) XGedit, XG-Pad (generic) Note that filter modulation is inoperative here.

Request for PLG150-DX files from the old Yahoo Group
6
Hi, I am searching for the service manuals for the Yamaha PLG expansion cards. It appears that this group used to have them back on Yahoo, and I have found reference to them here: https://modwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=23043#p23043 However, searching through the files that are currently available, I don't seem to see any of them. It appears they have not been uploaded yet. Could someone please re-upload these files? According to the date of the post, they were uploaded prior to October 28, 2008.

TX802 Factory Banks
13
Hi All, OK, I took the plunge and bought a license of OPS7. I'm in the slightly painful process of converting my TX802 programs and settings into VSTi presets for Cakewalk. In the process I need a few of the factory patches from the TX802. Does anyone have the Factory A + B banks in SysEx form? Searching the forum archives and elsewhere, I can find lots of copies of the *Performance* memories (which can be easily overwritten), as well as blank Voice banks. That's not what I need. I'm figuring that even after my first work to convert to the soft-synth, once in a while I'll need a classic FM sound that already exists in DX-land, maybe even in the TX factory patches. But once I've converted over to the OPS7, it's not going to be easy to access them: they're in the TX802's ROM banks, not on my laptop. I know I can copy all of the Bank A programs to the User Bank, one at a time; then dump them to SysEx; then 'rinse and repeat' with Bank B. If necessary, I'll do that, and I'll post the results in the Files section. But I'm hoping to avoid this tedious task. Alternately, if someone knows for certain that the TX802 Factory Voices are the same as those in the DX7II, then I'll try to use them. -- Regards, -BW Bruce Wahler Halfmoon-Switch.com? bw@... http://halfmoon-switch.com 978.597.7008

Hi All, I just got a spam/phishing email that says (paraphrasing), "Got your order. Click here to complete the sale." The 'sender' and 'topic' (both in quotes) was the Yamaha DX forum at groups.io. I'm not going to forward the email, but be aware. (If the moderator would like more details, please contact me directly.) They wasn't even smart enough to delete the forum thread from his email. <smh> -- Regards, -BW Bruce Wahler Halfmoon-Switch.com? bw@... http://halfmoon-switch.com 978.597.7008

VSTi FM Synths )OPS Parameters (classic mode SYX) and REAPER
3
I think OPS7 needs to be in “classic” mode, not “extended” mode. Then you need to go to the SYX page and find a SYSEX dump (32 patches) Copy (left-click, shift to select all of the sysex patches) and drag them to either A or B Then there are a couple of parameters within OPS7 that are open for you to use in a macro controller... i.e. B:Bank Patch (has 0-31 values) – parameter 576 A:Bank Patch (has 0-31 values) – parameter 512 REAPER Open the FX window for OPS7 – twiddle any knob within OPS7 In the FX window surrounding OPS7, left-click “param”, left-click “show in track controls” In the main Reaper window, in the OPS7 track... Right-click the new control At the bottom of the list should be “VSTi: Chipsynth OPS7...” (left click on that) This will start to show all of the available OPS7 parameters... the bottom of that list is an upside down triangle – left click that to scroll down (a long long way!!) Param 512 is A:Bank Patch Param 576 is B:Bank Patch Now you can right-click on the control, show envelope This will have a usable knob for selecting the patches (and presumably an envelope to draw in the MIDI or Track editor. VSTi FM Synths
8
Hi All, I have a TX802 that I have been gigging with for years. At this point, though, I would like to retire it to the studio 100% of the time for a couple of reasons: The sheer age of the synth is starting to scare me -- i.e., moving around a 30-35 year old piece of gear in a van, along with it's old set of capacitors, etc. I'm waiting for the day when it doesn't boot when I flip the switch. I'm trying to lighten my rig. Most of the sound electronics is in a large rack with wheels, affectionately called "the beast," that weighs about 70 lbs./32kg, loaded, including my 17" laptop. Cutting 10 lbs. out of that would make a big difference to this 66-year-old's back. I'm looking at Dexed, Arturia's DX7 V, and Korg's new OPsix Native, a soft version of their OPsix. The latter two have friendlier interfaces and effects, but the 'tech-iness' of Dexed doesn't really scare me, and I have plenty of effects in my digital mixer. Are there others I should look at? Specifically, I'm interested in any experience with: Running multiple VSTi instances to get multi-timbral use. (I use multiple FM sounds in some songs.) Crashes and such, particularly with Cakewalk by Bandlab and Windows 10. Ease (or difficulty) of porting TX802 (DX7II) sounds to a pure DX7 emulation. Thanks in advance for any insights. -- Regards, -BW Bruce Wahler Halfmoon-Switch.com? bw@... http://halfmoon-switch.com 978.597.7008

I accidentally damaged the circuit board
2
Yes you can. Clean the area with IPA and scrape away the green laquer to expose the copper trace. Solder a Wire between the two pins of the battery. However, you must check the PCB on the component side to check which pin is used to connect to the rest of the circuitry. WT Fr?n: [email protected] <[email protected]> F?r valerizimlichxxc21@... Skickat: den 12 mars 2022 05:11 Till: [email protected] ?mne: [YamahaDX] I accidentally damaged the circuit board Hello everyone. After reading that article on replacing the battery base for the machine, I tried to replace the battery base myself, but due to my poor soldering skills (first time using it), I accidentally burned the solder joint in the negative battery hole, making it impossible to adsorb solder now. Can I connect a wire from the right solder post and run it through the negative hole of the battery? Thanks to all the experts for their input.

TX81Z patch question
3
Hi there - I recently acquired a TX81Z. I've been using the Edisyn patch editor on a Mac to do some editing - but I'm still learning about the system. I'm curious if there is a straightforward way to restore to factory preset defaults - I'd like to start experimenting with new patches, but I don't necessarily want to lose the old ones! Does anyone use a similar workflow and have any suggestions? Thanks, G

Need help identifying DX7 front panel screws
2
My secondhand DX7 did not come with the 4 front panel screws or the 1 screw near the power switch. Anybody know what kind of screws these are? I understand the screw near the power switch may be slightly shorter in length. The clearest info I could find was from the DX7 Special Edition ROM instructions PDF: "Philips Head/Tapping Type (Size 4x16mm)" Searching these terms led me to a fastener with dimensional standard DIN 7981 C/F: https://www.fasteners.eu/standards/DIN/7981-F/ Does this look right? Thanks in advance for your help.

A strange journey worth sharing
4
Good evening everyone, This group has helped me before, so I always keep it in mind when trouble strikes my venerable Yamaha DX7II-FD with Grey Matter E! board update. I’ve been on a strange journey with that instrument of late, and I thought it worth sharing in case others can benefit from what I’ve learned. I won’t bore you with a lot of unnecessarily details. I’ll say only that I’ve been working to get all my DX data dumped to my computer as SysEx files because I positively dread the day the floppy on the DX finally fails. I’ve also been recording all my SE! songs (the E! sequencer application) into Cubase, so I have the MIDI to work with as needed without relying on the DX. The keyboard worked great in heavy use for weeks. Then a few days ago it started ignoring any SysEx dump I sent it. It would still play any MIDI data sent to it by Cubase, and it would still transmit its own internal data for SysEx dumps just fine. I could even keep sending banks of patches to Native Instrument’s FM-8 application without any problems. But the DX itself just didn’t respond at all to any SysEx data. It didn’t even give me any of the usual error messages about the receive buffer being full. SysEx just stopped working. I did a bunch of searching on Google and tried more things that I care to list. But suffice it to say reloading everything via an ERAM file from disk didn’t fix my problem, nor did loading all the banks from the original DX ROM cartridge, nor did re-initializing every patch in every bank, etc. The only thing that worked was pulling the backup battery and letting the instrument go completely blank, and even then I ran into an issue that scared the heck out of me. For anyone facing such a situation, here’s the procedure: I removed the bottom panel from the unit and pulled the backup battery in the back. I let the unit sit for 15 minutes so that everything would wipe completely. I reinstalled the backup battery and put the unit back together. When I first turned it on, I got an error about how the memory was corrupt, which I was happy to see. I next loaded the contents of an ERAM file from one of my disks. That fixed all the crazy patch names, but I couldn't hear any output either through the back or phones. The solution to that was to select one of the recently loaded performance patches. I hit the off switch, turned it back on, and everything finally worked--including receiving SysEx data! I was pretty scared at step (6) that I’d somehow messed up the output section of the circuitry or something, but I think I can guess what happened. When I reloaded the ERAM, I had only selected various patches in single mode. As such, I don’t think the edit buffer for all the performance data had been set properly yet. Once I selected a performance patch, however, the volume came back just as expected both through the headphones and the normal output jacks. So there you have it. I’ve read so many posts in the last few days about how people buy a used DX and can’t get it to accept SysEx or can’t get any sound and simply assume it’s broken garbage. I’m sharing this recent experience because it demonstrates what a hardy beast the DX truly is. All I had to do was wipe its memory and reload everything. Now it’s working again like a champ, almost 35 years strong! John Williston
