REASONS WHY THE YAESU FT-60R IS MY EDC PORTABLE RADIO 20
It’s been more than a decade since Yaesu launched the FT-60R dual-band handheld radio. It has since been superseded by newer entry-level models like the Yaesu FT-65R and the latest FT-70DR C4FM-capable radio. But the FT-60R still holds its own against these newer radios. In fact, even if I have the venerable Yaesu FT-2DR, I still carry the FT-60R as my EDC (everyday carry) radio. Here are reasons why: https://baninii.com/2020/09/05/reasons-why-the-yaesu-ft-60r-is-my-edc-portable-radio/

Smart Search memories 4
Hello I live in an area that is sparsely populated by radio signals of any variety. I decided to do a smart search to see what was around me. Unfortunately, I selected the "CONT" option, which keeps looking until it has found 31 frequencies. I have had it running for quite some time now, and the display shows that I have "caught" a whopping 12 signals. It is unlikely that I will find 31 (actually 30; the center frequency of the search range is included in the results). I found in the manual that you could recall the special bank into which the smart-search results had been saved, but the instructions assume that scanning has stopped. If I hadn't chosen "CONT," I guess I would not have a problem. The manual seems to be silent as to how to recall a partially-full "special bank" into which the smart-search results are saved. Does anyone know how to stop the smart-search and recall the frequencies it found? Thanks, and 73 Jim K0JEC

Restart on UHF PTT 6
I have 2 FT-60's. One works fine, one shuts down and restarts when I transmit on UHF at high power. Only on high power; does not do this on Low or ExLow power. Switched out identical antennas between the radios. Same issue. Switched out batteries. Same issue on the "restart" radio. Fully capable batteries on each, showing 8.0 and 8.1 V on startup. (I know a weak battery show the same result.) Can anyone think of a reason for failure on high power on UHF (same all across the band)? VHF works fine across the band on all power settings. Suspecting something inside and not the hand holding the radio....Thx, 73, Bob

Does anyone know what happened to... 9
Hello All, Anyone knows if the FT2DR Yahoo Group has moved to someplace? I am seeing some abnormal behavior on my FT2DR. I charge a battery (SBR-14LI) and I place it on the radio. In about 2 to 3 days the battery is completely discharged. Same battery, left of off the radio will last much much much longer. I have 3 SBR-1LIs and all of them are behaving in that way, so I’m sure it must be the radio. Any ideas? 73 Wassim WN6WJN

Damaged ft-8800 head 8
I managed to spill a drink onto my ft-8800 head and now it will not turn on and there is water visible under the display screen. Is there any way to fix this or can I buy just a head to replace it?

VAC-370 vs VAC-370B 12
My apologies if this has been asked before. I have a VAC-370 drop in charger that I acquired in 2006. I'm putting my FT-60 back in service and have noticed that the equivalent charger is labelled "VAC-370B". Is there any difference between the 370 and 370B, and if so, when did this change happen? Interestingly, HRO seems to still label the charger as "VAC-370". Thanks, Bill, W1WH

Yaesu ft 60 13
I am a returning ham after many years. Bought a Yaesu ft 60. Have located local repeaters. Able to transmit and see off the tone as well as receiving the I D Morse code. However I never hear anyone talking on two meters. Again, I have been out of it for many years but I remember two meter as being active. Have things changed or did I make a mistake programming the radio?

EDITED - Re: [Yaesu-FT-60] VAC-370 vs VAC-370B 5
Radio manufacturers are of the attitude you should replace the whole radio rather than buy parts to repair them. Its either that or their labor for parts distribution has really skewed the replacement part pricing. Nominal price on the charger base and matching wall wart is about $90.00. You can buy the radio, charger and wall wart as a package for $155.00 and tax. I lost my FT-60R for about a year. When it was returned the charger and wall wart were missing. I figured no big deal, I would buy a wall wart and dispense with the charging stand. I returned to the dealer to purchase a charging stand and wall wart. The $80.00 plus price at the time soured me. Turning to e-Bay a Chinese merchant in Hong Kong had the base stand and wall wart for $19.00 new. ?????????? Huh? ???????? I took the chance. The listing simply said it was a replacement for the Yaesu and listed no manufact- urer of the stand and wart. But when it arrived it had the Yaesu logos on both. Frankly it would not surprise me if the out of the door cost at the factory is around $20.00 for the complete FT-60R, stand and charger, but by the time you pay the added cost of middle men and duties, heaven only knowns what a US retailer is paying. Same thing happened with the battery. When the battery went horizontal I checked the retail house's price and it was around $55.00. So I bought a 3rd party pack for $13.00 off of e-Bay from another shop in Taiwan. About $5.00 postage and the $13, I had a working pack that has outlasted the original. Go figure. RT Systems Cable: FT60 VS FT70? 8
Hi folks. Does anyone know if the RT systems cable for the FT-60R will work with an FT-70D? I just acquired a used Yaesu FT-70D. I already have a Yaesu FT-60R and the programming cable for it and its RT Systems programmer. It is labeled USB-57A. It's 1/8" at one end, blocky USB at the other. I figured sure, it'll work with both radios, because they appear to have the same 1/8" speaker/mic jack. Right??? I just bought and installed the RT Systems programmer for the FT-70, but can't get anywhere reading from the radio. I go back on the RT site, and they show a cable labeled USB-57B for the 70. the one I have says USB-57A on it. Do I really need to spend $30 on another cable? ? Thanks for any clarification. 73, Chris VE3RWJ

Strange Memory Scan Behavior 6
Hi. I'm blind, so I have no idea what is happening on the display. I'll probably have to make a video of this with my iPhone for you guys to diagnose. But, I'll try describing the issue first. Strange things are happening when I tell the radio to scan memory channels. I have the edge beep turned on, so I hear when it crosses from the last memory to the first. That beep does not happen at regular intervals. I might hear it every few seconds, then a couple times in quick succession, then a long pause, etc. I have the squelch up pretty high, so I'm pretty sure this isn't the beep that occurs when the receiver stops on a busy channel. Something else is going on. When the radio does stop on a carrier, then, I press MHZ + or - to continue scanning, I sometimes hear the briefest snippet of NOAA weather radio before it starts scanning again. So to summarize: irregular band edge beeps. and, weird intrusions of weatheradio for a fraction of a second. Thoughts? Suggestions? Chris

How To Boost Scanner Antennas 4
Scanner antennas receive signals across a wide range of frequencies. Scanner antennas include police scanners, wi-fi scanners, search-and-rescue communication equipment and amateur radio scanners that seek out any signal. Scanner antennas may be used by those who wish to listen in or so that parties like first responders can respond to it. A scanner antenna’s signal reception can be improved by reducing its interference, strengthening its signal, and increasing its sensitivity and range. Here is how to do it https://baninii.com/2020/09/10/how-to-boost-scanner-antennas/

WHAT’S THE BEST BATTERY FOR YOUR RADIO SCANNER
We often get puzzled by announcements of new batteries that are said to offer very high energy densities, deliver 1000 charge/discharge cycle and are paper-thin. Are they real? And which is the best for your scanner? In this article we look at the advantages and limitations of the commercial battery. The so-called miracle battery that merely live in controlled environments is excluded. We scrutinize the batteries not only in terms of energy density but also longevity, load characteristics, maintenance requirements, self-discharge and operational costs. https://baninii.com/2020/09/08/whats-the-best-battery-for-your-radio-scanner/
