VAC-370 vs VAC-370B

My apologies if this has been asked before.

I have a VAC-370 drop in charger that I acquired in 2006.? I'm putting my FT-60 back in service and have noticed that the equivalent charger is labelled "VAC-370B".? Is there any difference between the 370 and 370B, and if so, when did this change happen?? Interestingly, HRO seems to still label the charger as "VAC-370".

Thanks,

Bill, W1WH

As an alternative to buying new FT-60 battery(ies) that might be needed, you might want to consider switching to using the FT-60 battery tray which holds a set of six AA cells. You can then use rechargable NiMH AA cells, particularly the smaller of the two Eneloops AA sizes which will fit (the larger size is still AA, and has about 30% more capacity than the smaller, but it might not fit into the FT-60).?

Costco has these in sets that include a 4-cell charger and various collections of the AA's you need, AAA's, and adapters to use the cells as replacements for C cells and D cells. In order to charge the six cells at one time, you need two sets so you have two chargers. Probably, two sets will include at least 12 AAA cells, so you have at least one charged load to use while one is charging.

I actually have three sets so that one charger and eight cells can go in my camera bag for the outboard flash (it requires four AA cells and was designed for ordinary AA batteries, but the NiMH's last much longer than alkalines before needing to be replaced with the spare set).

Oops! Small typo correction:?

Previous message read: "Probably, two sets will include at least 12 AAA cells, so you have at least one charged load to use while one is charging."

That should have said: "Probably, two sets will include at least 12 AA cells, so you have at least one charged load to use while one is charging."

Sorry 'bout that!

Jerry thanks for that info.? I'll definitely look into that option.

I have 2 FBA-25A battery cases and 12 Enloop AA batteries. Indeed, the snap will not close with the batteries in place; however, the FBA-25A is still a good option. The charged batteries provide plenty of power and have a long shelf life with minimal power loss.?

Another option is to modify the FBA-25A to use 18650 rechargeable batteries. Here’s on example:?

Bill, I'm aware that this thread is 2 years old. I am trying to find a used VAC-370 (because it's been discontinued, so no new ones available anymore), and am also curious about the difference between the 370 and the 370B.
It seems that this thread didn't offer any light about your original question. Did you end finding out something?

Thanks, 73,

Are you looking for a drop-in, intelligent charger for original Yaesu FT-60 NiMH packs?

If so, here you go:

Is this different than the factory? Pretty pricey.

There is a unit on eBay now for $45. It includes the wall wart and base. ?It is not mine and I do not know the seller.?

Radio manufacturers are of the attitude you should replace the who radio
rather than buy parts to repair them. Its either than or their labor for parts
distribution has really skewed the replacement part pricing. Moninal price
on the charger base and matching wall wart is about $90.00. You can buy
the radio, charger and wall wart as a package for $155.00 and tax. I lost my
FT-60R for about a year. When it was returned the charger and wall wart
were missing. I figured no big deal, I would buy a wall wart and dispense
with the charging stand.I returned to the dealer to purchase a charging
stand and wall wart. The $80.00 plus price at the time soured me. Turning
to e-Bay a Chinese merchant in Hong Kong had the base stand and wall
wart for $19.00 new. ?????????? Huh?? ???????? I took the chance. The
listing simply said it was a replacement for the Yaesu and listed no manufacturer
of the stand and wart. But when it arrived it had the Yaesu logos on both.
Frankly it would not surprise me if the out of the door cost at the factory is
around $20.00, but by the time you pay the added cost of middle men and
duties, heaven only knowns what a US retailer is paying.

Same thing happened with the battery. When the battery went horizontal
I checked the retail house's price and it was around $55.00. So I bought a
3rd party pack for $13.00 off of e-Bay from another shop in Taiwan. About
$5.00 postage and the $13, I had a working pack that has outlasted the
original. Go figure.

Thank you, Clint.
If I hadn't found that Yaesu VAC-370 on ebay (I believe that it was the same one mentioned by Chuck Moore), I probably would have ordered one from batteriesamerica.
But I liked the idea of an original Yaesu one at a relatively reasonable price (compared to a non-Yaesu product, or to the historically expensive $70-something that was the list price of the VAC-370 when it was still available new from dealers).
So, I purchased the one on ebay, and it works as expected.

This unit (the VAC-370, and the one from batteriesamerica, too) has three features that the new SBH-13 does not:

- Drop-in. Actually drop-in. You don't have to try once and again, impatiently, to align and insert the radio into the cradle. Just drop it in, maybe push a little, and that's it.
- Multi-chemistry (NiCd and NiMH). Yes, NiCd batteries are obsolete and if you still have them, they probably are useless... But maybe not.
- Smart (?) and fast. Not so sure about the "smart" part, but it is fast! It does in 1-2 hrs. the same task that takes 3-4 or more hours to the SBH-13.

<rant>I'm disappointed that Yaesu doesn't offer an equivalent solid smart charger for the FT-70D. I wish they include the SBH-28 with the radio, and offer a more hefty and faster one as an option. And a 6xAA battery case, too. Anyway.</rant>

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions! Stay safe!
