EDITED - Re: [Yaesu-FT-60] VAC-370 vs VAC-370B
Radio manufacturers are of the attitude you should replace the whole radio rather than buy parts to repair them. Its either that or their labor for parts distribution has really skewed the replacement part pricing. Nominal price? on the charger base and matching wall wart is about $90.00. You can buy the radio, charger and wall wart as a package for $155.00 and tax. I lost my FT-60R for about a year. When it was returned the charger and wall wart were missing. I figured no big deal, I would buy a wall wart and dispense with the charging stand. I returned to the dealer to purchase a charging stand and wall wart. The $80.00 plus price at the time soured me. Turning to e-Bay a Chinese merchant in Hong Kong had the base stand and wall wart for $19.00 new. ?????????? Huh?? ???????? I took the chance. The listing simply said it was a replacement for the Yaesu and listed no manufact- urer of the stand and wart. But when it arrived it had the Yaesu logos on both. Frankly it would not surprise me if the out of the door cost at the factory is around $20.00 for the complete FT-60R, stand and charger, but by the time you pay the added cost of middle men and duties, heaven only knowns what a US retailer is paying. Same thing happened with the battery. When the battery went horizontal I checked the retail house's price and it was around $55.00. So I bought a 3rd party pack for $13.00 off of e-Bay from another shop in Taiwan. About $5.00 postage and the $13, I had a working pack that has outlasted the original. Go figure. Chuck, you have learned a valuable lesson in world economics.? Anytime you can buy direct, through a distributor, used, refurbished or on sale you will usually save money.? The advantages often outweigh the risks. Its been like this since I was a kid and I'm a bit older than you.? Its called shopping wisely.? Good luck in the future. By the way, the mark-up from manufacturer to retail is about 7x actual cost.? Any time you can buy lower down the marketing chain, you'll benefit.

I would expect this rant to be in, say, a "Chinese crap radios" newsgroup - NOT a Yaesu FT-60R group ... I own several FT-60R HTs. A few from the moment they were made available in the United States. If I needed? a small part, Yaesu has them - at reasonable prices. >> ... Its either that or their labor for parts ?

Even when it was first intro'd as a Vertex commercial charger, it was never $90.>> ...You can buy ?

Is that included charger an intelligent one for both NiCD and NiMH chemistries? ?

You gotta change dealers. The drop-in charger that has shipped with the FT-60R the past few years ?is $24. The?AC wall wart charger you might still have somewhere ... but no where near?"$80" from legitimate?dealers. I couldn't ask for better performance nor support from an HT that what I have experienced with my many FT-60R unites ... Sold a few hundred, too, to happy owners ... -- Clint Bradford K6LCS http//www.work-sat.com |
Interesting experience.? I trust you will have many more with a good outcome. Your estimate of cost to the? the manufacturer is right on.? I also find surfing the internet is a good option when comparing prices on Amazon and eBay.? The Chinese sites generally offer good prices and relatively fast delivery.? I find them quite reliable. I find that the Chinese delivery can be hit or miss. I have waited up to two months for some products. When you send them an e-mail, you sometimes get broken English, so you really don't know what is going on. Just my 2 cents.
