Strange Memory Scan Behavior

Hi.

I'm blind, so I have no idea what is happening on the display.

I'll probably have to make a video of this with my iPhone for you guys to diagnose. But, I'll try describing the issue first.

Strange things are happening when I tell the radio to scan memory channels.? I have the edge beep turned on, so I hear when it crosses from the last memory to the first.

That beep does not happen at regular intervals.? I might hear it every few seconds, then a couple times in quick succession, then a long pause, etc.? I have the squelch up pretty high, so I'm pretty sure this isn't the beep that occurs when the receiver stops on a busy channel. Something else is going on.

When the radio does stop on a carrier, then, I press MHZ + or - to continue scanning, I sometimes hear the briefest snippet of NOAA weather radio before it starts scanning again.

So to summarize: irregular band edge beeps. and, weird intrusions of weatheradio for a fraction of a second.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Chris

Hi, Chris:

First off props to you and all vision-impaired amateur operators.? I don't know how you do it, but some of the best QSOs in my years as a ham have been with hams from whom I learned belatedly of their blindness.? Sure couldn't tell from a QSO!

What is causing the brief appearance of the weather channel is the "Weather Alert Scan" function.? To disable it, you'd press F/W, then the "set" button, then use the dial to select?Item 56,?"WX.ALT." From the settings on there, select "ALT.OFF."? Of course you'd hit the PTT to lock in the setting item and the chosen setting.

As to the band edge beeper, the procedure is similar, but you turn the knob until you find the item 19, "EDG.BEP."? You would disable the beep by using the appropriate selection.

I hope this helps.? It was clear as mud to me, and really puzzling, until I figured it out.

Hi.

Thanks for the really quick reply. :)

Well, in the case of the FT-60, it's a lot of memorization, since the radio doesn't talk. The FT-70 is worse, those menus wrap around, so good luck knowing where you are.? I tend to just set things how I want them in the RT Systems software, and dump that to the radio.

Then we have Kenwood, where almost everything talks, and their radios have been usable by blind hams since the TS-440 in the 1980's!

A particular Yaesu radio has to be really good before I'll put up with the extra frustration, believe me. Also, them and Icom, when approached on accessibility and inclusive design, usually refer us to Kenwood. ?

Sad when even the Baofeng stuff talks eh?

Sure couldn't tell from a QSO!
LOL we do speak like regular humans.

that one really had me stumped and I thought my radio perhaps had a firmware bug.

By the way, speaking of blind hams, check out

sometime.

Here's a podcast episode me and another fellow recently did, about the basics of the Allstar network.

Hey, thanks for the link to the podcast and to the blindhams site.

I consider folks like you not as "normal humans" but as "superhuman," just to clarify that remark.

I know several hams with sight disabilities who absolutely love the Kenwood TH-F6a ...

When I win the lottery, one of my first tasks will be to commission Kenwood to tool-up and make a couple
thousand, adding their voice chip - and donating to HandiHams ...
