Please heed the advice
Please please recognise that if Michael Coates or Seamus O'Donnel say dont do it, then don't do it. They are aviation experts . The Xair series aircraft may look simple but the design is based on a pin-frame assembly, loads of movement it it . Do not under any circumstances use an alternative covering method for the flying surfaces . If you do, it will fail and your aircraft will crash . Huw

X-Air Ultralight Aircraft One piece windshield
4
Hello, yes it is possible to fit a one-piece windscreen into the X-Air aircraft. If the aircraft is already built you will need to support the engine and the front part of the aircraft frame by a winch or cable to the roof otherwise you will do damage and bend everything. You then need to remove the engine support tubes which go up to the front of the engine, you also need to remove the main down tube which can be a problem if you don't remove the front pod but it is possible. You then remove the old windscreen, use it as a template for a new windscreen and I recommend using 2 mm, the standard lexan is 1.5 mm and you will benefit from additional strength having a 2 mm lexan windscreen. The other important consideration is much of the lexan comes UV stabilised, this means has a special coating on one side which must point towards the sun so please make sure when you are making your new windscreen that you have the correct side pointing to the sun otherwise you will end up with premature failure. Fitting the one-piece windscreen is no harder than fitting a normal windscreen but it is a lot more difficult when the aircraft is already built rather than when you are assembling it the first time from the kit. Take your time, keep your hands clean and definitely away from any solvents like petrol/gasoline, make sure any fuel lines that have been disconnected do not leak fuel anywhere and you will end up with a really good result. nonobeale@... Is it possible to put a one piece windshield on an XAir standard. If so I would appreciate any suggestions and information. Thanks

X-Air Ultralight Aircraft X Air for 5k

There is a Supercat here on the farm strip that has a Hirth 2706 but sadly with a spate of very serious failures, necessitating new cylinders and pistons and a complete replacement of the ignition system. As you say, they take a hit on the net. It is a pity they have not proven more reliable, as the basic design promised some mechanical advantages over the Rotax 582, at least to my way of thinking. Flying qualities of the X-Air are fine but just remember that it is a high lift high drag design and to get the nose down muyo pronto if the engine fails.

I second what Bill said about the Hirth.... They just dont cut it. Buy the plane, sell the Hirth and go looking for a nice Rotax 582 and have happy days ! herbgh@... X Air for 5k
I just joined to get some info on the X air std...A friend has one for sale...and the price seems right...save the high cost of parts for Hirth engines...Jugs are 800 bucks...and the cylinder stud repair kit is 90 dollars...which seems high for 8 3/8th inch studs... The 2706,fuel injected Hirth is vintage pre 2001 as I learned... and as I said the jug has stripped head bolts which need the conversion kit.. hours on engine in the neighborhood of 160... so...any info on the quality of Hirth engines would be appreciated....I have been around long enough to know that they take a large hit on the net... and the flying qualities of the plane...any info in that regard would be appreciated... It will be on Barnstormers soon if I do not move....seems like a no brainer... fix the jug ...fly...sell for 10 k or so... Registered light sport....Thanks Herb

Bolt and nut sizes
I am currently remodeling a 1993 X-Air standard. I was wondering if anyone had a list of the bolt and nut sizes and their locations. It seems someone has worked on this aircraft and it is obvious that some bolts are the wrong size. I have the original assembly manual but sizes are not listed .Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

X-Air Ultralight Aircraft Simonini 95 hp engine on H-model

Hi Bob, I'd be very wary of the SIMONINI engine after 50 hours. The pressed & splined crank does not bode well for the claimed 500 hour TBO In my experience. It's a pity because up until then we had no problems with the additional power and I would have liked to have stuck it to Rotax for their excessive pricing - but I guess reputation costs! BR Richard.
