Steve,

I saw your wait time and I had to test it myself. So I started UiView
and mine took close to 3 hours and it finally started. Cortano and all
of her secret searches are all turned off also.

Steve,

It looks like it's actually waiting for searchui.exe which is part of
Cortana. I did some searches and it looks like you can't completely
disable Cortana. I don't think Microsoft wants you messing with her.
When I killed just the searchui.exe program under the Uiview.exe wait
chain Uiview then started. I guess it's the price you have to pay for
using UiView with Windows 10.

I tried the same thing last night and my wait chain time was 1.5

Patently we need to find a way to get around this "Wait Chain" or
simply doing what I currently do, Kill Uiview and do another restart,
I am sure that there is someone out there with computer skills far

Re: Uiview32 Start up on Windows 10

Try this..

If you want to disable Cortana completely, just launch the personal assistant, click on the small hamburger button in the top left corner and look for the option that reads Do you want Cortana to work for you? Simply choose Off and you're good to go.

It may or may not totally disable it, but it's worth a try.

Re: Uiview32 Start up on Windows 10

There is a way to analyze the wait chain and find what process is causing the wait. In Win7 you get to it through the resource monitor utility. Finding out what's causing the wait, might provide a clue.

I don't see the problem here but on a system with a long delay, using the resource monitor you might be able to figure it out.

I've seen reports of programs using DDE having delays on start up under Windows 10. The problem seems to lie in a defect of Cortana. People who have disabled Cortana find the delays go away. I don't know if UI-View uses DDE but you might try disabling Cortana and see if things improve. I don't have anything running Windows 10 to try myself.

Re: Uiview32 Start up on Windows 10

Ron,
I tried the same thing last night and my wait chain time was 1.5 hours, after that Uiview popped up on the screen and ran as normal.
Patently we need to find a way to get around this "Wait Chain" or simply doing what I currently do, Kill Uiview and do another restart, I am sure that there is someone out there with computer skills far above my level of understanding to sort this problem out!

? Keith,

So I set "com port none", rebooted and started UiView and it didn't come
up. I then went into Task Manager and found UiView. This time I right
clicked and selected "Analyze wait chain", not sure what that means.
Screen shot is included. This time I waited, I think around 10 minutes
and "wait chain" went away and UiView came up. So I guess it's going to
take a while for UiView to start in Windows 10 the first time it's
started after a reboot.

Try setting it to "com port none" and saving the changes and exiting
the program and see if it starts normally then. Next open the terminal
window and watch what happens when you enable and disable the TNC.

Re: Uiview32 Start up on Windows 10

It looks like we are getting closer to the problem with Ron's finding the?Analyze wait chain in Task manager, of course this still does not explain why any future restarts of Uiview start quite normally after the first hung delay,As I said earlier Keith, I only use TCPIP, and no RF so I never have to configure a Port,
Thanks for all the interesting replies, even the one about bottom posting....wasting your breath on me about that subject!

At least you have proved that the issue isn't related to UI-View having trouble opening a vim port or connecting to a TNC.

Unfortunately, attachments aren't allowed. You could post it to the files area.

Is there anyone running UI-View on Windows 10 and not having this issue?

Same thing here Steve. I always forget where it is in Task manager and
have to hunt for it to shut it down. When you try to run it again it
says UiView is already running. Also, Win 10 64 bit.

I now have Uiview32 installed on 3 PCs all running Windows10

Uiview32 is mounted OUTSIDE of the programs folder directly on the C:
Hardrive

My problem is that after the PC has been rebooted (Both a cold start
and a simple power cycle restart) My first attempt to start Uiview32,
it remains hidden.
It is not running in the hidden Icons folder in the task bar either!

I open up Task Manager and it shows Uiview32 in the list of programs
that are running so I kill it and then start Uiview32 again and this
time it shows up on the desktop and everything works just fine.

Every successive start of Uiview32 after that is just fine until I
have to reboot the PC and then I see the same problem again.

It makes no difference if you start Uiview32 by right clicking and
starting in Administrator mode

I am curious if anyone else has seen this and if so is there a "fix" I
can apply to cure this problem!

Is UI-View sending any commands to the TNC when it starts or stops? Try setting it to "com port none" and saving the changes and exiting the program and see if it starts normally then. Next open the terminal window and watch what happens when you enable and disable the TNC.

Is UI-View sending any commands to the TNC when it starts or stops? Try setting it to "com port none" and saving the changes and exiting the program and see if it starts normally then. Next open the terminal window and watch what happens when you enable and disable the TNC.

Same thing here Steve. I always forget where it is in Task manager and
have to hunt for it to shut it down. When you try to run it again it
says UiView is already running. Also, Win 10 64 bit.

I open up Task Manager and it shows Uiview32 in the list of programs
that are running so I kill it and then start Uiview32 again and this
time it shows up on the desktop and everything works just fine.

Re: Uiview32 Start up on Windows 10

I've had that issue with a netbook running Win 7 starter. I just restart the program each time I want to use it on a cold boot. It would be nice to know the why? But it does run correctly if you kill it and then restart.

For North American users, PMap 9 (Precision Mapping 9.0) along
with PMapServer 9 can provide street level mapping for all of North
America. They can be installed without hassle on Windows 7 & 8.
PMapServer is available for download on the UI-View website.
However, Undertow Software is no longer selling new copies of
PMap 9, but existing owners can continue to use it as long as they
can get it registered.

Users of Windows Vista, 7 or 8 should not install UI-View below

Resolved - Kantronics TNC delayed packets issue ! ?

Chuck Kimball

By chance I was communicating with a new Igate operator in the state a
couple of weeks ago as his station was suffering from delayed packets.

He had already done some research and found some items I wasn't aware of
from an aprs.fi blog post a couple years back.

Jist of it is to short the RTS & CTS pins within the serial cable,
and/or disable all flow control settings.
Also for those not in KISS, software commands also appear to solve the
issue.

- XFLOW OFF
- START $00
- STOP $00
- TRF OFF
- TXF OFF
- CONO OFF
- FLOW OFF
- XON $00
- XOFF $00

He tried the software changes, and that seemed to resolve his issues.
I just checked and for the past 3 weeks there have been no delayed packets.

Not sure if using the software commands prior to going into kiss mode
would help but might be worth some testing.

I've always used the nightly restart (with TNC reset) previously, but am
doing some testing on my home station to see if this may be a better
solution.
The restart occasionally causes a hang if the TNC is receiving packets
when it's being reset, and UI-View ends up wanting a button pushed.

Wanted to pass this along since a lot of us that have been doing APRS
for a while were of the impression there was no fix to the Kantronics
issue.

Among other things, it is capable of restarting UI-View. This
will take the TNC out of KISS mode, exit the program and then
re-start UI-View again. Go to the Schedule Editor. Click on
NEW, select RESTART from the drop-down selection and then
choose a time... e.g. 01:20 to have it restart at 1:20 am.
Click on YES, and then EXIT.

Another useful function is to have it connect to an APRS
server after UI-View starts. You would choose APRSERVE_CONNECT
from the drop-down selection and enter +1 to have it connect
one minute after UI-View starts. In the APRS Server setup,
you could also tell it to automatically reconnect should it
ever get disconnected.

PS - sorry to everyone for the earlier incomplete reply!

Re: Google Maps KML to UI View Overlay?

Hi All,

I have searched the forums and I don't know that I can find the answer to
this... Is there a way to build a route within Google Maps, export it to a
KMZ/KML file and then transfer it to an overlay in UI View? There have been
some posts about this, but I'm unclear about the answer. Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks!
Jamie, K1JSH
The freeware open-source utility "GPSbabel" available at

. <>

can read and write and write a huge number of GPS data and map data file
formats and convert from one to another. Specifically it can read/write KML
format files, and write them out as either CSV text files or dBase files.

In turn Precision Mapping by itself, or the PMap Server for UIview can import
either of these two formats. The result will be a bunch of point objects, not
a route of line segments.

Note that Precision Mapping 9/PMap Server 9 can import the ESRI ARCview .SHP or
MapInfo .MIF vector file formats. This utility

. <>

purports to convert .KML to .SHP format which can then be imported into PMap
Server. Since the .SHP format can handle multiple line-segment objects (i.e.
"Polylines") it should be able to preserve the route as a route rather than as
a bunch of point objects. I've never tried it so I don't know how well it
works. (I use the MapInfo program to import stuff into .MIF format, then
import that into PMap Server.)

It's very frustrating that I was in conversation with Undertow Software (PMap
publisher) about 6 months before they killed Precision Mapping to add the .GPX
(GPs eXchange) format to Precision Mapping. GPX is now the most widely used
format to exchange all kinds of mapping data (point objects, routes & track
lines, & area objects) between GPS devices and various mapping programs. For
example, the more recent versions of Delorme Topo, Delorme Street Atlas, MS
MapPoint and Garmin BaseCamp all support GPX imports. Further, GPSbabel can
convert practically anything (including .KML) to GPX format. I have imported
GPX tracks from my Garmin nuvi into MapPoint and Topo many times, and they show
as routes (not points). Your task would have been quite trivial if GPS had
made it into Precision Mapping (and by extension the UIview PMap Server 9)
before it "died".

File - About Bouncing (Admin message)

This message is sent to all new members, and to all members
every now and then. It has been revised as bounce reports have
changed a bit.

Any of us could experience no longer receiving email from the
UI-View support list. You might want to print this message and
review it if you stop receiving messages from the UI-View list.

If you stop receiving messages from the UI-View list, suspect
that either...

1) this or some other Yahoo group that you are a member of is
sending email which some spamblocker system regard as spam or
junk mail (quite a lot of these reports since summer 2009).

2) it may be that your email account has filled up with unread
messages or that the account on your mail server has ran out of
storage space. Read or delete the old messages on your mail server.

3) Some MSN or Hotmail accounts, and others such as arrl.net,
qsl.net which are used as a forwarding address from time to time
cannot forward to your primary address. When this hapens, the
Yahoo group receives an error message with something like
"impossible to relay to xxx" and you are then in the "bounced"
list. There are increasing numbers of bounces from some service
providers about messages which are blocked by them for policy
reasons.

4) You or your email provider have set up a challenge-and-response
system for those sending e-mail to you. The moderators will not
send replies to such challenges. You should select another
address for your list membership(s).

Sorry, but we cannot investigate every one of these blockings.
Please be aware that if you haven't received list messages
for some days, and reactivation requests are not reaching
you, or not answered by you, your account at the UI-View
list may be deleted. It may deleted if several bounces occur
in less than a week or two. It will also be deleted if the
bounce report says that your address is invalid, discontinued,
or unknown. Be aware that the bounce can relate to messages
from other lists than the UI-View list if you are a member
of other Yahoo groups.

If your membership is deleted, you will not be able to log
into the Yahoo group. If you try and send email to the group,
it will be rejected. However, you can subscribe again with a
valid and working email account by sending an empty email to
ui-view-subscribe@....

If you are away for some time, you might want to set your
account to temporarily receive only special messages or
even no email at all, but we recommend that still receive
special messages. You can log into the Yahoo group when you
return and change it back to daily digest or normal email.

Note: A member may send reactivation requests to himself/herself
from the Email Preferences section of My Groups.

73 and good luck - your UI-View group moderators
