Resolved - Kantronics TNC delayed packets issue ! ?

Chuck Kimball

By chance I was communicating with a new Igate operator in the state a
couple of weeks ago as his station was suffering from delayed packets.

He had already done some research and found some items I wasn't aware of
from an aprs.fi blog post a couple years back.

Jist of it is to short the RTS & CTS pins within the serial cable,
and/or disable all flow control settings.
Also for those not in KISS, software commands also appear to solve the
issue.

- XFLOW OFF
- START $00
- STOP $00
- TRF OFF
- TXF OFF
- CONO OFF
- FLOW OFF
- XON $00
- XOFF $00

He tried the software changes, and that seemed to resolve his issues.
I just checked and for the past 3 weeks there have been no delayed packets.

Not sure if using the software commands prior to going into kiss mode
would help but might be worth some testing.

I've always used the nightly restart (with TNC reset) previously, but am
doing some testing on my home station to see if this may be a better
solution.
The restart occasionally causes a hang if the TNC is receiving packets
when it's being reset, and UI-View ends up wanting a button pushed.

Wanted to pass this along since a lot of us that have been doing APRS
for a while were of the impression there was no fix to the Kantronics
issue.

Among other things, it is capable of restarting UI-View. This
will take the TNC out of KISS mode, exit the program and then
re-start UI-View again. Go to the Schedule Editor. Click on
NEW, select RESTART from the drop-down selection and then
choose a time... e.g. 01:20 to have it restart at 1:20 am.
Click on YES, and then EXIT.

Another useful function is to have it connect to an APRS
server after UI-View starts. You would choose APRSERVE_CONNECT
from the drop-down selection and enter +1 to have it connect
one minute after UI-View starts. In the APRS Server setup,
you could also tell it to automatically reconnect should it
ever get disconnected.
