Job Description

The purpose of this role is to develop, direct, and complete all types of archaeological projects (survey, monitoring, testing, and data recovery). Projects may be located in the Southwest and/or Great Basin regions. Below is a list of duties for this position.

?

Duties:

  • Develop, direct, and participate in all types of archaeological investigations (testing, data recovery, monitoring, survey, and field documentation)
  • Assist and instruct other staff in proper field, research, and reporting methods
  • Prepare, review, and edit technical reports documenting and synthesizing the results of research and field and lab work
  • Evaluate and make recommendations regarding the NRHP eligibility of archaeological sites, findings of project effects upon cultural resources, and appropriate means of avoidance, minimization, and/or mitigation
  • Prepare graphics for reports using ArcGIS Pro or coordinate graphic preparation with GIS staff
  • Develop, implement, and oversee research designs and work plans
  • Develop and adhere to project scopes and budgets
  • Manage and track budgets and schedules
  • Understand and assist clients with state, federal, and tribal cultural resources compliance
  • Coordinate with sub-consultants, vendors, and permitting agencies
  • Work independently and resolve project challenges with minimal supervision
  • Supervise junior staff
  • Perform archaeological research and conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories
  • Use a tablet, compass, trowel, shovel, pick, hula hoe, and screen
  • Communicate effectively and work closely with fellow employees, clients, vendors, and the public
  • Perform travel that may include overnight and/or out-of-state stays for extended periods of time

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):?

  • Minimum Education:?Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field; MA or MS in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field preferred
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and a minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising and managing projects, junior staff, and preparing technical reports
  • Experience successfully directing all types and phases of cultural resource investigations (survey, testing, data recovery and monitoring)
  • Ability to be permitted as a Project Director by the Arizona State Museum required; ability to qualify at a supervisory level for additional state and federal archaeological permits in AZ, NV, and/or UT preferred
  • Thorough understanding of Southwest and/or Great Basin prehistory and/or history, archaeological method and theory, and applicable federal and state cultural resource management/historic preservation laws
  • Advanced technical expertise in a field such as bioarcheology, flaked stone analysis, ground stone analysis, or zooarchaeology preferred
  • Experience preparing research designs, work plans, and technical reports that meet state and federal standards and guidelines
  • Successful management and completion of projects on time and within budget
  • Experience using GPS and GIS applications (Tablet, ArcGIS Pro)
  • Experience in and ability to generate, organize, and maintain accurate field records that meet state and federal standards and guidelines
  • Valid Driver's License, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company's insurance carrier

Archaeological monitors for upcoming? project in Newport/Greenville (Knoxville) Tennessee

Project Description and Schedule

UES is hiring several archaeological monitors for an upcoming construction project near Knoxville, TN. The expected duration of monitoring is 6 weeks. This project-specific monitoring role has the potential to grow into permanent positions with UES- the fastest growing environmental consulting firm in the U.S.!

As part of this monitor role, the successful applicant will conduct cultural resources monitoring tasks that include coordinating with construction crews, monitoring construction progress, maintaining detailed records, and documenting discoveries of cultural resources. UES monitors use tablets for data collection and daily logs, adhere to state and local protocols for site recording, and assist in evaluations for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This position offers on-call, hourly, temporary-status employment for the duration of the monitoring project. UES offers a huge potential for additional work and career opportunities.

To facilitate the construction schedule, work hours typically range from 8 to 12 hours per day. Lodging and per diem expenses will be included for non-local monitors.

Job Summary

Join the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas team, where we protect over 50,000 acres of conserved land with a variety of cultural resources, including the renowned Lindenmeier Site, a National Historic Landmark. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine archaeology with strategic open space planning and community engagement to make a lasting impact on our region's landscape.

As part of our team, you will implement, evaluate, and adaptively evolve the cultural resource program's plans, policies, projects, and standard operating procedures. You will design, lead, and refine program elements, craft specialized strategies for historic preservation and cultural resource management, and resolve complex issues in these areas. Your work will include researching, analyzing, consulting, training and providing technical guidance to protect and enhance cultural resources and historic properties across Natural Areas lands. This position is also a key contributor in the development of management plans, multi-disciplinary projects, and policies related to land and resource stewardship.?

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Plans and manages all phases of cultural resources projects, including archaeological field survey, monitoring, testing, excavation (when appropriate), technical report production, eligibility determinations, and data management and recovery.
  • Coordinates with the City’s repository for the sustainable curation of cultural materials.
  • Provides information and resources needed to protect historic and pre-contact archaeological sites, and assesses and makes recommendations on land use issues.
  • Maintains necessary documentation related to local, state, and federal laws, consults with Native American representatives and other stakeholders, and interacts with local, state, and federal officials about permitting, project implementation, and program documentation.
  • Collaborates and supports management planning and project implementation across department disciplines.
  • Contributes design recommendations and monitoring that supports the department’s conservation, cultural, and visitors use values, helping ensure department compliance with regulatory requirements related to program disciplines and project implementation.
  • Develops and implements best management practices and policies to accomplish work group and department goals.
  • Serves as project manager using the department’s standard processes and tools.
  • Trains colleagues, partners and volunteers in how to recognize and protect cultural resources.
  • Plans and manages the contracting and data related to historic preservation surveys and reports.
  • May participate in cultural consultations with appropriate tribal representatives and Native American/ Indigenous community members, and assist with interpretation, programming and public engagement efforts.
  • May support management planning as an assistant planner and may lead a future management plan updates.
  • Conducts public outreach and prepares written content, reports, social media, and presentations on environmental issues.
  • Presents to diverse audiences ranging from one-on-one conversations to community meetings.
  • Responds to citizen, employee, and City Council inquiries, including complaints and service requests.
  • Serves on task forces and teams related to natural and cultural resource protection, sustainability issues, as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

The ideal candidate will have experience with Class III pedestrian surveys in Nevada or surrounding areas, an understanding of the prehistoric archaeological record of Nevada and/or the Great Basin, familiarity with digital data collection, and an appreciation for the importance of efficiency and teamwork in pedestrian survey workflows.

This work is scheduled to begin Monday March 10, 2025, and will commence in a single 8-day field session (10 hour days). UES’ preference is for local field technicians who can commute from the Reno/Sparks area or other nearby towns in Nevada.

Compensation

The hourly wage for this project will be between $23 and $27, commensurate with experience and attitude. UES will provide daily transport to and from the project area from a central meeting point TBD. Field techs will be responsible for arranging their travel to and from the meeting point each day. UES will provide single-room accommodation and $59/day per diem for non-local technicians. Non-local technicians will be responsible for arranging their travel to the project area at the beginning and end of the 8 day session. This opportunity is fast approaching so apply today! Responsibilities

  • Conduct pedestrian survey using parallel transects under the supervision of a UES field director.
  • Identify both precontact and historic-era archaeological isolates and sites.
  • Record isolates and site boundaries using digital recording platforms.
  • Perform cursory artifact analysis (e.g., quantification, attribute analysis, photographs, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to walk long distances over rugged terrain in a variety of environmental conditions.
  • Basic proficiency in navigation/orienting (using a compass and GPS).
  • Attention to detail and good communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Basic proficiency in digital field data collection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A BA in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field is preferred but is not necessary if the applicant has one or more years of experience in CRM.
  • 3-6 months previous archaeological experience on pedestrian surveys in Nevada or other areas of the Great Basin.
  • Familiarity with precontact and historic artifacts of the Great Basin

Be A Part of An Eventful Field Season at PAL!

PAL’s Seasonal Field Archaeologists assist with all phases of terrestrial archaeological investigations in a variety of environmental settings including urban, inland, and coastal locations, under the supervision of the Project Archaeologist.

In this role you will perform archaeological excavations with hand tools and/or machine-assistance, identify and record cultural deposits including artifacts and features on standardized PAL field forms, work collaboratively in a team environment while following PAL and client health and safety protocols. ?We are looking for enthusiastic archaeologists, with a strong commitment towards client customer service who enjoy a fast-paced work environment.

Requirements:?

  • B.A./B.S. degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field required
  • Successful completion of an accredited archaeological field school?
  • Previous New England cultural resource management (CRM) experience preferred
  • Able to perform fieldwork in a physically demanding environment and variable weather conditions
  • Able to travel on short notice
  • Valid Driver’s License

Required skills include the ability to conduct fieldwork using appropriate field techniques and methodology, able to take detailed notes and maintain accurate field records, able to use effective verbal and written communication, and have a working knowledge of GPS units, map orienteering skills, and cameras.?

Hourly Rates are from $18 to $24, commensurate with experience. Single occupant lodging for non-local projects is provided with a per diem and mileage reimbursement. PAL offers Paid Holidays, a 403(b) plan, and Sick Time.
