Archaeological field technicians for intensive pedestrian archaeological survey (Class III Inventory) in the Reno/Sparks area!

Project Description and Schedule

UES is hiring multiple field technicians to help conduct an Intensive Archaeological Pedestrian Survey (Class III Inventory) in the Reno/Sparks area, Storey County, NV. This pedestrian survey is expected to be conducted in a single 8-day field session. These positions have potential for long-term, permanent employment for the driven, collaborative, and reliable archaeologist. The ideal candidate will have experience with Class III pedestrian surveys in Nevada or surrounding areas, an understanding of the prehistoric archaeological record of Nevada and/or the Great Basin, familiarity with digital data collection, and an appreciation for the importance of efficiency and teamwork in pedestrian survey workflows.

This work is scheduled to begin Monday March 10, 2025, and will commence in a single 8-day field session (10 hour days). UES’ preference is for local field technicians who can commute from the Reno/Sparks area or other nearby towns in Nevada.

Compensation

The hourly wage for this project will be between $23 and $27, commensurate with experience and attitude. UES will provide daily transport to and from the project area from a central meeting point TBD. Field techs will be responsible for arranging their travel to and from the meeting point each day. UES will provide single-room accommodation and $59/day per diem for non-local technicians. Non-local technicians will be responsible for arranging their travel to the project area at the beginning and end of the 8 day session. This opportunity is fast approaching so apply today! Responsibilities

  • Conduct pedestrian survey using parallel transects under the supervision of a UES field director.
  • Identify both precontact and historic-era archaeological isolates and sites.
  • Record isolates and site boundaries using digital recording platforms.
  • Perform cursory artifact analysis (e.g., quantification, attribute analysis, photographs, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to walk long distances over rugged terrain in a variety of environmental conditions.
  • Basic proficiency in navigation/orienting (using a compass and GPS).
  • Attention to detail and good communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Basic proficiency in digital field data collection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A BA in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field is preferred but is not necessary if the applicant has one or more years of experience in CRM.
  • 3-6 months previous archaeological experience on pedestrian surveys in Nevada or other areas of the Great Basin.
  • Familiarity with precontact and historic artifacts of the Great Basin
