WestLand is seeking a full-time Archaeology Field Director to join our Utah Cultural Resources team. Our Utah crews can be found working throughout the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin regions on CRM projects for private and public sector clients. The ideal candidate will have expertise in local and regional cultural history, archaeology, and local, state, and federal statutes governing cultural resource investigations, be permittable by state and federal agencies, and have previous experience leading and supervising field crews. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading teams in support of archaeological compliance projects across Utah and potentially neighboring states. For out-of-town work that includes overnight, or longer duration stays, per diem and single-occupancy hotel rooms are provided. For remote projects where lodging is not available, additional camping per diem will be provided. This position will be based out of WestLand’s Salt Lake City office.

The salary range for this position is $28.75 - $38.00 /hour.

What will I be doing?

  • Leading and coordinating archaeological fieldwork (i.e., field survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery excavations).
  • Supervising field crews in the recording of artifacts, features and sites, creating scaled profiles and plans, and being responsible for all paperwork, notes, and records related to project activities.
  • Processing and cataloging artifacts and other materials associated with data recovery efforts to lab and repository standards and specifications.
  • Filing and scanning project related records and paperwork.
  • Contributing to and completing tasks related to all phases of project work, including record searches, site record production, technical report production, and agency & client communication.

What qualifications are required for this role?

  • A graduate degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field. An undergraduate degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field AND additional years of experience may substitute for a graduate degree.
  • A minimum of two years supervisory experience as a cultural resource professional in the Western United States.
  • Previous experience working in the Colorado Plateau and/or Great Basin culture regions.
  • Previous experience writing or contributing to technical archaeological reports.
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours in various environments and conditions including extreme temperatures, rough terrain, and potential high altitudes.
  • Ability to travel for work, occasionally on short notice and for extended periods (paid drive time, M&I per diem, lodging when available). For remote projects where lodging is unavailable, camping may be necessary and additional per diem will be provided.

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Cultural Resources Field Technician to join our West Chester, PA or Pittsburgh, PA offices and assist with cultural resources management projects. Our office is actively involved in supporting solar energy and other renewable energy developments throughout the region, ensuring compliance and preservation in line with sustainable development goals.

This is a temporary, field-based assignment typically offering at least 40 hours per week, expected to run from April 1 to June 27th, 2025. Priority consideration will be given to candidates located in or within driving distance of the West Chester, PA or Pittsburgh, PA areas.

Applicant must be willing to participate in a drug testing and alcohol screening as part of the pre-employment process, as some projects require such screenings.


What you will accomplish

  • Perform complete archaeological surveying and field testing.
  • Conduct shovel test pits and excavation units.
  • Execute data recovery and associated field recording.
  • Complete field forms, digital photography, and in-field mapping.
  • Assist with archaeological office and lab work.
  • Participate in GPS data collection in the field under the supervision of a Field Lead or Project Archaeologist.

Experience and qualifications for success

?Minimum Qualifications:?

  • Completion of an accredited archaeological field school.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk, and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather (including extreme heat and humidity), rugged terrain, often at high altitudes.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Current valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • 6+ months experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, methodology and monitoring.

This includes project locations throughout the Eastern US with upcoming projects including Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III surveys. Archaeological monitors for upcoming? project in Newport/Greenville (Knoxville) Tennessee

Project Description and Schedule

UES is hiring several archaeological monitors for an upcoming construction project near Knoxville, TN. The expected duration of monitoring is 6 weeks. This project-specific monitoring role has the potential to grow into permanent positions with UES- the fastest growing environmental consulting firm in the U.S.!

As part of this monitor role, the successful applicant will conduct cultural resources monitoring tasks that include coordinating with construction crews, monitoring construction progress, maintaining detailed records, and documenting discoveries of cultural resources. UES monitors use tablets for data collection and daily logs, adhere to state and local protocols for site recording, and assist in evaluations for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This position offers on-call, hourly, temporary-status employment for the duration of the monitoring project. UES offers a huge potential for additional work and career opportunities.

To facilitate the construction schedule, work hours typically range from 8 to 12 hours per day. Lodging and per diem expenses will be included for non-local monitors.

ASM is a consulting firm specializing in archaeology, history, architectural history and cultural resource management (CRM) with offices throughout the western U.S. and Hawaii. ASM is always searching for motivated cultural resource professionals to be a part of our team to operate at various levels and capacities.

Projects
The projected workload may consist of overnight stays in remote areas, and local non-per diem jobs. Most of the work will entail daily commuting to and from job sites throughout Northern California. Hiring will occur on an as-needed basis per individual project until fully staffed.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Archaeology/Anthropology (or AA degree/certificate with 10+ years’ experience)
- At least 1+ years of field work experience or equivalent
- Be willing to work in and adapt to a variety of environments and challenging field conditions
- Excellent writing and communication skills

Work duties will be performed outdoors and may occasionally be in remote backcountry environments. Duties may require hiking over long distances, standing for long durations, and the lifting and transport of loads up to 25 lbs.

Minimum Requirements:
  • BS or BA in anthropology or archaeology with more than five years of field leadership experience in Southern California. Experience in the Mojave Desert is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to individuals who have demonstrated experience in field crew management. Successful candidates will have excellent technical writing, computer, and GPS skills.
  • Ability to walk up to 10 miles a day; lift up to 40 lbs.; identify historic and prehistoric artifacts and features; conduct archaeological survey and testing; complete sketch maps of features and sites; complete field forms accurately and concisely; use a GPS unit; and photograph resources.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, high elevation, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures).
  • Good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn.
  • Must have a clean driver’s license. Employment is also subject to drug and alcohol testing (including cannabis). Background check may be necessary on certain projects.
