Does anyone use their Shari node mobile?? I am looking at ideas to take Allstar mobile.??

Ken,

Take a look at my YouTube page you'll see a "very rough" video on my take of SHARI mobile, also my qrz.com page, very easy.

Cheers.

Re: Shari pi4b hat mobile

I haven’t yet but a cig lighter usb adapter to power the unit and connected to your phone in hotspot?mode should work just fine.

We’re already using a mixture of URI’s, CM108’s, modified USB Sound cards with Baofengs, Wouxuns, Motorola’s and others and we’re trying to move away from all that. The appeal of the Shari, having the onboard RF from the SA818 is that it takes away all that complexity, cabling, power supplies and cost and standardises the equipment for all users.

?

It’s an all in one Asterisk solution, like the Shari I’m looking for, but 4m/6m instead of 2m/70cm. I’m quite happy to modify a Shari if I can find a replacement for the SA818, hence my question to the group.

?

Hopefully that clarifies the question and keeps us on topic, any ideas anyone? ?

Apologies for the off-topic responses, are you interested in this unit as a unit that takes in RF from a nearby user and puts them on the internet (Allstar link) or are you looking to craft a node that takes signals off the internet and transmits RF to 'hit' a local 4/6m repeater or nearby simplex operators? In other words, are you looking to create an on-ramp into ASL from an RF device, or an off-ramp from ASL to access RF repeaters/nearby operators?

For an on-ramp a few hundred milliwatts RF output might suffice, but for an off-ramp you'd likely be much happier with a high-watt 4/6m radio and a box like the DINAH (??) that connects to an RPi and a radio with a PM6 connector (like the FT-8900 as someone else mentioned for 6 meters). I am unaware of any 4 meter radios with PM6 connectors.

The reason the VHF/UHF SA818 devices are available is because there were/are sufficient commercial applications for a company to design and produce such a 'part', I don't think there is a corresponding commercial market that caused a manufacturer to design a similar module for either the 4 or 6 meter band.

Good luck,

Ken, N2VIP

I think “most” is a stretch, *some* is probably a better characterization. The individual asking the question never mentioned DVSwitch and you wouldn’t be connecting any of those modes via a 4/6M transceiver. ?However that shouldn’t eliminate use of DVSwitch - one would utilize DVS as a bridge between ASL and other networks. ?Now to cross mode from ASL to say DMR well would require something like a BlueDV dongle so you have dedicated AMBEE encoding.

I'm not sure how common that really is - I know over a half-dozen SHARI owners, some running multiple units, and none are running DVswitch.

I'm sure there are lots of people running DVswitch, but "most" might be a stretch...

Most users I know run a SHARI specifically to hit an analog club repeater they can't reach from home (HOA restrictions, distance from repeater, etc.).?

I used a URI connected to a Mac Mini running Debian/ASL for a while, until that system died a few weeks ago, just before I went on vacation. I had a Yaesu HRI-200 connected to the other side of the URI to provide an analog Allstar to WIRES x bridge, which could have just as easily been a Yaesu mobile radio as well, since they have the same pin-out.

I just bought a cheap used Intel NUC fifth generation Core I3 ($50 on Ebay) to replace it. Saw a bunch of HP thin clients for about the same price. With something like a DINAH, a DRA or a URI, you can use any number of radios.

Overall both of these solutions work better (and can be cheaper) than going SHARI route given scarcity of Pi’s.?

Re: 4/6m Shari node

DINAH is "plug and setup" with the FT-8900 quad band radio (10m - 6m - 2m - 70cm).? Just plug the provided 6 pin miniDIN cable into the miniDIN jacks on DINAH and the FT-8900.

Jason Johnston

Repeater Builder has a device called a "RIM Alinco" that attaches to the back of any of the older monoband Alinco radios, which, I believe, includes a 6M mobile -?

Either allows you to use any radio instead of the RF module in the SHARI. There's no reason you couldn't use a 4/6m radio.

The Brian although originally designed to use a Baofeng 888 Radio could in theory be used with a different radio if the appropriate PCB points for Audio PTT and COS could be located.
