p5370 quad files 6
I’ve printed both classic and new cyanotype with the P900 profiles printed with the P5370 and they work as expected so as far as I am concerned I can extrapolate from those two processes that I have no need to create modified profiles from the ones I created for the P900. Chris

Average a measurement with an i1 Question 6
For anyone who is using the Xrite i1 for measuring targets, or Chris. I was reviewing Chris's(your) great instructions for QCDN. I like these because they are written using numbered steps (thank you!), which my brain prefers. The instructions mention to measure a target three times with an average, and send to the Data Tool (I only just began using this.) My question is how does one "read three times" and then "average". If I read each row of the target, multiple times, does it simply override the last measurement, or does it somehow average the reading? Any guidance on achieving the average via multiple readings of the target would be helpful. I typically measure the target once, but I am interested in attempting to work with an average to see if it yields a better result. Thanks, DM

QTR ON EPSON Ecotanks L8180 2
Hello!! I was wondering if anyone has experience installing QTR on Epson Ecotank printers. I’ve read in other posts that for the L1800 model, it’s possible to use the profile of the 1400/1430. Has anyone tested it with the L8180 (8550)? Would it be possible to use another profile or make some kind of adaptation to make it work with this model? Best regards,

QTR-CurveView is not opening the P900 profiles with 10 inks. Basically nothing happens. And suddenly it is not opening any profiles.

21-step crashing qcdn 7
Greetings :) I am running a 21 step target and when I attempt to open in QCDN linearize app, it crashes the system-every time. I want to use this as measurement because I actually looks pretty good. I seem to recall others posting about this ages ago. Searched the group posts but it doesn’t come up in the search. Any ideas? specifics: i3pro, QCDN, 21 step target macmini m1 os- sequoia 15.x

Epson Stylus 2200 2
I have an old Epson Stylus2200 and used it years ago for printing digital negs. Haven't used it in at leat 7-8 years. I bought some expired ink and cannot get anything near a print-just some light color, no B&W coming through at all. Laughingly, it is recognized and shows as having full ink cartridges. I expect the problem is the nozzles/print head, but the question I have is whether to get it fixed, or just toss it. I have a Canon PIXMA Pro100 that I use for printing, but wanted to get back into alternatyive photography, hence breaking out the R2200 from the shelf. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Epson p800 Drying time per head pass control on Windows 3
Hi, Ink is not drying fast enough while i am printing on a photopolymer plate. I use Epson sc P800 and Quadtone application on Windows 11. Extending Drying time per head pass would help but I do not know how to change it with quadtone. It is possible to change that in Epson driver but I cannot do it with QTR Please help. Marek

Epson P5370 23
We’ve switched to the Epson P5370 at work due to the P900s having such severe pizza wheel issues as to make both printers unusable for all but the busiest of images.. No luck being able to install QTR for the P5370. Op sys attached. Error message attached. I’ve named it P5000, P5300 series, P5370, none work. I’ve re-installed QTR 3x. I’ve turned on and off printer. I’ve made sure all permissions are read/write on the folders from Library to quadtone to quads. Any ideas? Someone on this list had no problem using P900 profiles on this printer, either, and I do notice the inks are the same except VLM is LM and VM is M…hope that is not an issue. Chris

QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe 6
I use QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe to create icc's for soft proofing my alt process prints, and have been doing so for many years. After I do a calibration, I make a calibrated negative with a step table that goes from 0 to 255 in steps of 5 RGB units (0, 5, 10, ... 255). I measure the print with a Spyder and then drag the Spyder output file onto the QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe, which creates the icc profile. This has always worked and has given me very reliable soft proofs for cyanotype, vandyke, and kallitype. Today, I printed a color step table, not with a digital negative, but rather with my inkjet printer. I wanted to see if I could make an icc profile that I could use to simulate printing color separations. I measured the print with my Spyder and dragged the Spyder output file onto QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe. The QTR-Create output file shows that the L values linear, but the A and B values are all zero! What am I doing wrong?

Setting up P900 for Direct to Plate methods using QTR 6
Another PSA. I have wrestled with helping people set up their P900s for DTP use over the last couple of years. I think I have finally figured out a pretty solid workflow for getting this done. It has a number of steps, and is documented here: DTP with P900 and QTR

P800 - Only Black Inks Laying Down 9
Hello, Hoping for some insight/suggestions. This is in a school lab setting. Working with Print Tool and a P800 on a Mac Mini M1. IT forced another update, now to Sequioia 15.3.1. This resulted in the QTP800 printer no long showing up as an available printer. I uninstalled the P800 driver and Print Tool, and reinstalled. This was successful in terms of the printer being available. I reinstalled all of the quad files, and I remade the presets. All seemed fine. When printing digi negs, now the printer is only laying down black inks. I checked the quad files and those look as they should with some color inks. I restarted the machine again and all of the apps. No change, only laying down black inks. Any suggestions? (Besides telling IT to stop updating OS in the middle of the term.) Thanks, DM

Revisiting Carbon 6/7/8 in 2024 45
I've got my Epson 7800 running matte black ink in refillable carts. I've experimented with a couple different ink sets, with and without LC/LM toner carts to neutralize the warmth of the carbon ink. I'd like to take advantage of all 8 channels, and looks like Paul Roark is now recommending NOT using the 2% ink dilution anymore. Is anyone running a similar combination of Matte Black ink across all eight channels? What are your ink dilutions? Here's an example of what I'm thinking of testing, but not sure what to put in the 8th? 100 80 60 30 18 09 06 I'm thinking of giving the following a try. 100 85 70 55 40 25 10 5 dilution base is Pauls Carbon-6.

Offtopic: Question on QuadToneProfiler_QuickCurve-DN ver 3+ by Richard Boutwell 5
If anyone out there is using the newest version of QuadToneProfiler-QuickCurve DN (version 3.1.3) by Richard Boutwell? I am wondering exactly where you are supposed to enter the Blocking Density from the blocking density test. His instructions gloss over specifics. In my case I can up with a blocking density of 35 (see attached screen capture). I am applying the Blocking Density number by manipulating the "Total Ink Load" slider on the Starter Curve Setup page as on the attached screenshot. This worked for me, but I am not precisely sure if this was the planned use. Another individual told me to use 100-(Blocking Density) as goal for the "Maximum Black Percentage" which threw me way off course. UltraChrome ink and printers 4
They don't sell the original ink for my Epson R2880 anymore. And I've checked the Epson website for printers that use UltraChrome ink, but they don't sell them anymore in The Netherlands. Does anyone else has this problem to? And what is the solution?

QTR, calibration 23
Dear all: I am a beginner and I have a question regarding the determination of the ink densities to be used under the 'Ink Setup' tab when using multiple gray inks. O.k., Paul Roark calls it a 'judgement call'. With my very limited experience I fully agree. But regardless of that I would like to better understand the procedure which I found in several documents. Accordingly, the ink density to be entered under 'Ink Setup' should be the result of the product of the fractions of the respective next darker ink which would yield the same density (or Lab L) as the ink at 100%. I measured the Lab L values from a print of the calibration image for Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308, the GCVT ink set of Paul Roark, resolution 2880-super and 50% global ink limit. The results for each ink are shown as circles in the image below. All data can be well represented by exponentially decaying functions (lines). If I follow the above mentioned standard procedure, the fractions are indicated by the labelled plusses and the densities to be entered under 'Ink Setup' are represented by the K values below the full diamonds (they do not lie on the K-curve, because the ink curves are not linear). Am I correct that these densities, i.e. products of fractions, should be used? I am asking, because the products of the fractions, although they certainly carry relevant information, have no obvious meaning which would help to visually understand the resulting ink curves. Hendrik PS: From the curves in my ink separation plot, is the global ink limit I selected (50%) adequate? The lighter inks still have a significant slope at 100%.

Printer descriptor file (ppd) not found for printer quad error 7
Hi, I am trying to install a profile on an intel mac using qtr 2.8.2 for a p5000. The printer is already installed and has profiles on it already but when I try to install a new profile, I get this error "printer descriptor file (ppd) not found for printer quad". I tried reinstalling qtr but I still get the same error message. Any ideas as to why. Thanks, Greg

Widget for creating linearization files
This is kind of a PSA I guess. When I teach workshops in digital negatives and DTP processes using QuadToneRIP, many people get heartburn at the notion of spending anywhere from $300 to $3000 for a used or new X-rite spectro. I found this little colorimeter sold by ColorMuse that connects to an app on your phone and gives remarkably accurate LAB values when compared to my X-Rite i1 Pro2. The second version of this little device is around $100.: https://variableinc.com/product/color-muse-2-paint-matching-solution/ The knock on it is that creating a data file that you can use in either the QuadToneRIP linearization or Richard's QuadToneProfiler apps is a little tedious. The device itself is a little chunky, so you probably will want to print targets that have ?" or larger squares so you can hit the measurement exactly. I have a few of those in the downloads area of my website. I wrote a little javascript widget that can be found here: https://clayharmonblog.com/Color-Muse-Data-3.html that lets you enter the measured values as you read them and then downloads a standardized 21-step text file that you can use in these programs. This is a more sophisticated version of an earlier table based entry form because there is no requirement that you have evenly spaced steps. It uses a cubic spline to resample whatever garbage you enter into a 21-step text file. You can graphically edit the L or A or B files if you want to manually smooth them before downloading the text file. This is only really relevant to someone who only occasionally needs to linearize a quad file. If you are a high volume measurer, you will probably want to get a more capable measuring device. Note that I am not a programmer of any great skill, but I think this is reasonably robust. Give it a try and send me any feedback if you find problems.

Thought you would appreciate
Thought this group would appreciate this comparison. Started the classic cyanotype unit a week ago and several students’ prints came out as the one on the left so I ASSUMED the P900 profile I translated to the P5370 would not work. I scrambled to make a new profile on the fly. BEFORE I saw their negatives. Then I looked at the negative (and Print-Tool settings) and realized the student had not pulled down the profile so printed the negative with None (no profile) and so did the students after him, since Print-Tool defaults to last used settings, did the same. There’s always something in a gang lab. The classic cyanotype P900 on the P5370 profile works fine. And I bet those students will pay more attention next time. Of course, they now have a detailed handout. Chris
