I guess I was too late to the party and didn't receive any 'notes' from new members (assuming you mean initial posts). Looking forward to this group as I'm new to QTR. I have demoed it for several weeks now and plan to send my 'shareware' amount to Roy today. Diane ----------- Diane B. Fields picnic@... photo site http://www.pbase.com/picnic

Introduction
Hi Group, I really hope this group takes off. I have been reading the DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint group. While this is a nice group it is not focused on the subject that is important to me, and that is the Quadtone RIP. Let me introduce myself. I am an electronic engineer. I have worked in remote sensing (airborne sensors and satellite ground stations) and color science (designing proofers for the graphic arts industry). I have a Leaf Valeo 22 megapixel digital back on my Hasselblad and print on an Epson 4000. I am a member of the Western Photographic Circle, which is a print making club. Good luck and I hope we can attract Roy Harrington over to this group. Ray

MIgrating QTR to a new printer
Ok, I guess I'll get the ball rolling with a QTR specific question. I've been usin QTR since it was released for Windows with my 2200. I'll be taking delivery on an Epson 4000 in about a week and the newest release of QTR is printer specific. Has anybody else changed printers? Is it as simple as just re-running the installation program, or do I need to un-install / re-install? I'll be gratefull for any advice.

All you need to do is install the new software, then choose your printer. However, I use the Macintosh G5 w/OSX8.3.8 and it is rther simplified to install various printers. Jack Fulton

Hi! I'm Ian McKee and I've just come over from digital BW. I'm a retired chemist who still has and uses the darkroom but I also got a 4000 and have been having a ball printing from my scanned images with QTR. I shoot mostly film 4x5 and 5x7 and am happy to expand my printing to inkjet. I'm also particularly interested in making large digital negatives for contact printing. I'll be talking with you in the future (I've already had some conversation with Diane who was really helpful.) Ian

Updated QTR on Roy's site
Just came from BWDigital and see that Roy has posted an update to QTR 2.2.1 for Windows to support 2880 dpi. Also included is the Moore tutorial on curve creation. Your friend in Photography, Johnny

roll min paper length?
Has anyone tested the min allowed custom paper length using roll QTR? I was trying to save money on tests and used a 4 inch length for the Epson driver; the result was 8 inches of a 16 inch wide image. When I upped the defined length to 6 inches it seemed to work fine. But with QTR 6 inches wouldn't work, then I had to hit the road. Does anyone know what the minimum roll paper length is for QTR? longer than 6 inches, or do I have something else wrong? Thanks Scott

UT7 curves 3
Hi, My name is Jim weekes and I have loved QTR ever since the GUI for it came out. I need all the help I can get. I have been a photographer for 35 years. I had three different studios in Vermont and managed a color lab for seven of those years. I also had a darkroom up until I got a D30 and saw what Photoshop could do with a HUGE 3 megapixel file. The chemistry had been getting to me so I have effectively quit the darkroom for all but film developing in MF. I am writing to see if everyone knows about the UT7 curves for the 2200. I am on the Digital B&W forum and, at one point, Stephen Billiard, the author of the GUI, put out a list of curves for GUI and UT7 EEM warm and cool were on it. He immediately said it was a mistake and that he had published a list that Roy was working on. Having a 2200 set up with UT7 ink made me write to Roy and ask. He, very kindly, sent them to me with a disclaimer that they weren't finished. Well, to my eye, with very little tweaking, they make lovely prints. I would suggest that anyone with the 2200/UT7 combo give them a try. Best, Jim Weekes

Hi All, Glad to be part of this new and much needed group. I suppose the formation of this group, by itself, validates the importance of the QTR. Count me in. I am only a lowly amateur with modest output, but hopefully I will be able to contribute in a useful way. I used to have a b/w & color darkroom (many years ago) and enjoyed it immensely, but the distractions of life became all-consuming. The digital process has seduced me once again, and I feel strongly that I'll stay with daylight printing. Love my QTR! Best wishes, Jeff Singer http://pbase.com/k2kv

Moderation Policies 2
Hi All, I have heard that Scott is grumpier than heck and will moderate moderately strictly. So, the idea here in the QTR group is to make QTR info available and relatively easy to find instead of being mixed in with a ton of other good stuff like in the B&W group. Hence: 1. non QTR techno stuff will be gracefully rejected with a suggestion to post it to the B&W group which I greatly admire. 2. non techno stuff period will be dumped "moderately" gracefully; this includes politics, religion, philosophy, ads, and "everything else of a similar genre". This also includes bashing anything, anyone and any company. My general thought is that most of the problems that cause company bashing, for example, are user induced. There are famous exceptions of course. 3. related to number 2: there are EXCEPTIONS. The ones that come to mind are ads of GENERAL interest like "QTR can now be used with 'our inks', etc... And "welcome to my exhibition in Paris, tickets are attached"... What I was trying to say in the previous sentence is that showings of work are another major exception, unless they seem very commercial. So how do we tell? post it and see. 4. also related to number 2: I hope that posts will exhibit grace to a greater or lesser extent. Every once in a while I myself goof on this (lose it?) so DUMP ON ME, BUT via EMAIL, NOT a POST. Often I catch it myself and go back and delete the post before more than a few thousand people have suffered it. :) 5. Also considered not the best post is a "thank you for bailing me out of deep ???". Send an email to the savior. They will appreciate it and our digests will not be astronomical in size. 6. Speaking of data size, please delete most of the thread that you reply to, leaving only enough for context. Repeated failure to do this in the long run will lead to mutual frustration. 7. Initially post anything that you think might fit or nearly fit; I will be happy to consider it and you might well help me define what I mean by all this. Incidentally members and posts are not currently reviewed before they appear in public and I do not expect them to be. If you have looked at the Epson 4000 group, it operates much like this; is very useful; and I do almost zero actual moderation. Kirk started it right one might say. 8. If you should someday find that you are no longer a member, don't take it as a major insult. It will mean that in my opinion you have stepped fairly far over the line. Rejoin and we'll try again. On the other hand if you are ever banned, hmmm. I have only done that once in a year on the other group. 9. And when you read this you may well notice that the formating stinks; word wrapping at the darnest places, etc. I have never figured out how to fix this and would appreciate advice. Is it just a Safari thing or???? Happy posting Scott Graham

Roll printing? 5
HI Am interested in hearing roll printing experiences, on QTR of course :) Both Mac and PC Is it working for you? Do you run it simultaneously with loaded and active Epson drivers? If so, are the Epson drivers set up on USB or Firewire? I have been running Ep on FW for roll and setup QTR for roll on USB. The good news is that nothing bad happened so far. (some one mentioned that it might ruin the printer to have both cables setup at once). I have not made the QTR work yet. Thanks Scott

Bernie: [Quadtone RIP] Curves for Epson 2200/2100
Hi Bernie, Take a look at this post from Paul yesterday on the DBWTP group: "Depending on what tones you prefer, you can set up the yellow position with the default sepia (slider printing range is slightly warm), a second light carbon UT2-LM (prints neutral on Enhanced Matte with sliders at 0), or put in gloss optimizer for bronze-less glossy printing on Kirkland glossy paper. See my Readme at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/UT2-Readme.htm . Have fun. Paul www.PaulRoark.com" Two points there for you -- one is to consider changing out the yellow for more neutral printing if your not doing Sepia prints, the second is the "favored paper" these days for minimal bronzing seems to be the Kirkland Glossy -- and with GLOP in the yellow position and Paul's curves, word is that the bronzing is all but non-existent. Some say it's completely gone. But then, you don't have Sepia capability, are on glossy paper (rather than semi-glossy/pearl), size is limited to 8X10 unless the groundswell gets big enough to convince Costco to import a larger size, and lastly, you MAY have to use GLOP in the yellow position (some say no, Paul recommends it). Hope this helps. Should get you a more neutral print if nothing else by changing out the yellow position -- but then, Paul's reference and Web page will explain it much better than I can ;>) All the best, Richard wrote: black and The the 23/03/2005

[Quadtone RIP] Curves for Epson 2200/2100 13
Hi, I’m not very pleased with the neutrality (and bronzing) of my black and white prints using QTR RIP / Epson 2100 / Ilford Smooth Pearl paper. Does anybody have any curves that might help or any other advice. The settings I use in QTR Rip are:- Media Type: Premium Luster Photo Paper Curves: UCpk-EPPremSemiGloss-cool 50 UCpk-EPPremSemiGloss-cool Tried a few of the other built in curves, but the above seems to be the best. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Bernie -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.308 / Virus Database: 266.8.1 - Release Date: 23/03/2005

QTR workflow with PhotoShop on Windows
I have several questions regarding the workflow for QTRgui using WinXP and PhotoShop. Here is what I do now. Please advise if this can be improved. 1. When opening a b&w file in PS I convert to QTR-Gray Lab space from my default Dot Gain 20%. I use Dot Gain 20% because I don't see a choice of QTR-Gray Lab in Color Settings. 2. After finishing editing I then convert to QTR-Gray Matte Paper or Gray Photo Paper depending on whether I am printing to matte paper or glossy paper. I convert vs apply because the Win version requires me to save the file before exporting it to QTR. 3. I then jump to QTR, fill out the form and print. So far my prints look good but can I do better? 4. One problem I see is constantly changing back and forth between gray lab and Gray Paper. Does this degrade the file? Is there a way to set the default color setting as Gray Lab? Should I do so? One other question: Can I use Eboni black instead of Epson MK and get better Dmax on matte paper while using the curves supplied with QTR? Thanks, Chuck

New to QTR, new to XP and new to Yahoo.
Hi all, I'm struggling with a lot of stuff right now - it's late and I'm going to go to bed before I do something really dumb - but before I turn in - I've just got time to shout HELP! Firstly I am amazed by the goodwill that the internet community shares - I always try to help my fellows where I can too... I have had an Epson 2100/2200 for a couple of years and have settled on a reasonably functional process - Ilford Smooth Pearl with the Ilford profiles (I've just about got to grips with using photoshop to apply the profile and Epson's driver set to 'no colour adjustment'). This works well for colour. I also use a Spyder to calibrate my monitor. This is great until I come to do black and white. I am a member of a portrait 'competition' club - every 6 months we each place our best colour and our best B&W prints on the table at the local club house. Everyone elses B&W (traditional film/prints) look great - mine turn a funny colour - yes, you guessed it metamerism! So having read lots of great stuff about QTR - and having just 'upgraded' to an XP PC I am able to join the club and give it a try. (Version 2.2.1 using download 2.2b) First impressions are that the GUI does a great job and the whole concept is wonderful - but! But - I feel like an outcast - I'm using XP and not MAC or Unix! I had a load of hassel trying to load the tutorials etc that come as stuffit rather than zip, but I got there in the end. I'm not sure when/if Aladdin will come for my kneecaps for using their 'expander'... So now I give it a go - I got a reasonble - if warm print on Epson Premium Semi Gloss using 'no curves', but when I told the QTR GUI that it was wokring with EPSG (UCpk-EPremSemiGloss-warm.quad) I got a terribly heavy print with very blocked up blacks. (I am using the photo black not the matt black ink). I haven't tried to create my own curve yet - I thought I'd have a pop with the standard ones first and see how I get on. I've also read that Ilford profiles for the Epson UC inks are out there, but not in my download, and not in a any downloadable profiles that I could find. Any pointers? Also - how the hell do I read this forum? I use dpreview but I can't get my head round Yahoo, nothing seems to 'flow'. I can't follow the threads. I'm sure it's just another case of me hitting the wrong button... Sorry if I sound tired and emotional (it's just because I am!) I'm off to bed - will look tomorrow to see if there's any golden nuggets of advice (assuming I can navigate Yahoo). Thanks for reading - if you got this far without falling asleep. Cheers... Martin Are you sure you want to send this message?

QTR Newbie 3
Greeting Fellow Rippers, I just discovered that there was a Windows version of QTR a few days ago. I have downloaded it and have been churning out test prints. Here is my config: OS: Windows Printer: Epson 2200 Inks: UC with Photo Black Paper: Epson Prem. Luster, Kirkland Pro. glossy QTR: 2.2.1 standalone with QTRgui Current goal: To print Neutral BW prints on a variety of papers. Like others I often print color on this printer, as well so I am not interested in switching to dedicated BW inks at this time. I am currently trying to understand Curves. I have read through the QTRgui help, but I am still pretty ignorant. Here is a list of my current questions: 1. There are two curves used in printing. What is the difference between the two? Is one applied to highlights and the other to shadows, or are they just blended uniformly? 2. The "blend percentage: is described as: "The blend percentage shows the amount of the left hand tone curve to be used." ??? What does this mean precisely? Since there is a slider that moves from the left to the right curve, I assume that this adjusts the "balance" between the left curve and the right curve. Again is this the point at which one curve takes over or is it an overall blending across all parts of the image? 3. There appears to be only one neutral curve "UC-NoBlack-neutral". All other curves appear to have some form of toning. I'm guessing that this curve can be used with all papers? I have used this preset for both the left and right curves for almost all of my printing so far. I this the correct way to get neutral prints? Are there other options I should investigate? 4. The curve names appear to be some kind of encoding of the ink, paper, and tone. Is there any way to get a full decoding of the curve name? 5. Are there any docs or webpages I should be reading to bring me up to speed? Please don't suggest that I trudge through the thousands of posts in DBWTP. Thanks in advance for your help. I am excited about the possiblities QTR offers! Once I have done a fairly thorough testing of glossy and luster papers I will switch over to matte ink and papers for testing. -Ross

Thanks to Scott for setting up this group. He was right that it was about time to have a separate group. I've been away for the last week so I missed the launch but it looks like it's off to a good start. Roy

QTR profiles 3
A while back I tried QTR on the MAC under Jaguar and vaguely remember part of the program allowing the editing of profiles/curves. I recently downloaded the current version for Panther and cannot find a way to edit profiles. Apparently this can be done on the PC version. Can someone steer me in the right direction? regards, Rich
