staff of more than 200. SPC is officially bilingual, with English and
French being the working languages.

The Coastal Fisheries Programme (CFP) comprises almost half of the SPC's
Marine Resources Division. Its mission is: "To provide a regional support
service that assists Pacific Islanders in identifying the status, and
optimising the long-term social and economic value, of small-scale
fisheries and aquatic resources in Pacific Island waters."

The Community Fisheries Section is part of the Coastal Fisheries Programme

fisheries management and development activities".

The Community Fisheries Adviser is responsible to the Director of the
Marine Resources Division and is responsible for the day-to-day management
of a section currently including two other staff (one professional and one

The post requires a self-starter with considerable initiative, accustomed
to working in new situations in new countries and comfortable
collaborating with people from all levels of Pacific Island society, from
the community to the senior government level.

*
* Based on fieldwork in member countries and territories, and other

the activities, roles and development options of women and men in Pacific
Island subsistence and artisanal fisheries, and produce reports for the
benefit of local, national, regional and international planning processes;
*
* Maintain a regional network of contacts as a means of exchanging
ideas, knowledge and experience, and discussing issues of concern for
Pacific Island communities involved in the fisheries sector, and produce
and disseminate resource materials including training manuals and videos;
*
* Promote and assist in the development of income-generating
activities for women based on seafood harvesting, processing and
marketing, using environmentally sound technologies compatible with the
sustainable use of marine resources;

other regional organisations as appropriate including, in the shorter
term, assistance to the Forum Fisheries Agency in assessing the role of
different sections of the community in national tuna fisheries and thus
the development of appropriate national tuna fishery management plans;
*
* Manage and report on expenditure and activities according to the
aims of projects implemented in partnership with national and
international funding agencies and foundations, and develop new project
proposals in order to address future objectives of the section, according
to the mandate and guidance provided by SPC member governments and
administrations.

programmes or workshops in a relevant field;

International Foundation for Science

IFS, Sweden assists young scientists in agriculture, fisheries, forestry
etc to build careers in their own countries. In recent years there have
been no grantees from the Pacific and very few since the organisation
started in the mid 1970s.

Recently, IFS has sent a message to their research advisers throughout
the world and asked for ways of making the organisation known to
prospective applicants. They have agreed to have the notice distributed
on Pacific PestNet and other Networks.

Here is the IFS message:

THE INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR SCIENCE - CALL FOR RESEARCH GRANT
APPLICATIONS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRY SCIENTISTS

The International Foundation for Science (IFS) provides support to young
scientists of merit in developing countries by awarding research grants
and providing grantees with additional services such as travel grants
and purchasing assistance.

Research grants are awarded up to a maximum value of USD 12,000 for a
period of one to three years and may be renewed twice. They are intended
for the purchase of equipment, expendable supplies, and literature.
Applicants must be citizens of, and carry out the research in, a
developing country. They should also work at a university or national
research institution in a developing country (countries in Europe,
including Turkey and Cyprus, or the former Soviet Union do not qualify
for support). As well as being under the age of 40 (under 30 for
applicants from China) and at the start of their research career,
candidates must possess a higher academic degree, which should be at
least an MSc or equivalent.

The IFS supports projects dealing with the management, use, and
conservation of biological resources. The Foundation organizes its
activities into six Research Areas, viz Animal Production, Aquatic
Resources, Crop Science, Food Science, Forestry/Agroforestry, and
Natural Products.
