Pasture Agronomist/Animal Scientist

NATURE OF POSITION

This position is located in the CNMI Co-operative Research Extension and
Education Service (CNMI-CREES), under the supervision of the Director of
CREES and the administrative leadership of the Tinian Co-ordinator. It leads
the Livestock Improvement Program for the CNMI. The position is located on
Tinian, CNMI. The appointment is 50%, for agricultural research, and 50%,
for agricultural extension.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·Agriculture Research / Extension programs are interdisciplinary and require
the ability of the scientist to work as a team member to: 1) identify and
diagnose important problems of farmers; 2) establish research and extension
program priorities; 3) prepare grant proposals; 5) develop a plan of work
and 6) implement, evaluate, and interpret research, extension, and other
activities; working with clientele, advisory groups, Northern Marianas
College staff, and other agencies and organizations.
Performs Job duties using appropriate research / extension methods,
techniques, and
technology; evaluates educational activities for effectiveness; recruits,
trains, organizes, involves, and recognizes volunteer leaders (youth and
adult); establishes
and maintains effective working relations with other extension and research
specialists. Acts as a Program Leader and Principal Investigator (Pl) in the
CREES
Livestock Production Improvement Program.

Works co-operatively with Agriculture and Life Sciences research and
extension staff to car out various experimental studies; collects, records
and analyzes data; disseminates information generated by research, produces
and disseminates extension
publications, and addresses environmental issues facing the agricultural
industries including pesticides in the environment and quantity and quality
of water.

Co-ordinates and collaborates with the local Governments, Department
of Lands and Natural Resources, The Tinian and Augean Soil and Water
Conservation District, Department of Environmental Quality, Department of
Coastal Resource Management, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, the
Farm Services Agency, farmers and ranchers, input suppliers and meet
processors and wholesalers, etc. on projects or programs in agriculture,
pastures, livestock, forestry, soil conservation, water resources,
quarantine, and other agriculturally related projects or programs.
Plans and implements an effective public relations program to promote
extension / research.
May be asked to teach courses in areas of expertise for the ALS degree
program.

Performs other duties as requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The scientist will be expected to develop the work plan, assign and review
work and evaluate the performance of junior CNMI-CREES and DLNR staff
assigned to the Livestock Production Improvement Project.
Supervision, guidance and performance evaluation will be provided to the
scientist by the Tinian CREES Co-ordinator and the Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree (or BS degree with at least 10 years highly relevant
experience in research or extension) in pasture agronomy, animal husbandry
or animal science .
Knowledge of tropical or semi tropical pasture and livestock production.
Familiarity in working with computers.

Demonstrated writing ability and capability in preparing grant proposals.
Ability to work as a multidisciplinary team member and to work well with
farmers. Willingness to work in the field, implementing on station, on farm
or other types of trials.
