SUBJECT: RECRUITMENT OF ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN


1. The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) invites applications
for the position of Assistant Librarian to be based at the SPC Office in
Suva. This is a three-year contract position and it is desirable that an
appointment be made as soon as possible. Closing date for applications
will be 30 April 2000.


2. I would be grateful if Governments and Administrations could

DUTY STATEMENT


ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN


The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) was established 51 years
ago as a bilingual, regional technical, advisory, training and research
organisation. It serves 22 Pacific Island member countries. The
headquarters is in Noumea, New Caledonia, with its main sub-regional
office based in Suva, Fiji. There are country and field operations in a
number of other Pacific Islands.

The Secretariat is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced person to
work as the Assistant Librarian in Suva, Fiji.

The Assistant Librarian will be responsible to the Deputy Director
General, Suva for operational activities and to the SPC Librarian, Noumea,
for professional duties.

The Library in Suva is particularly strong in materials which support the
development of Pacific agriculture however, information services include
providing materials in agriculture, animal health, plant protection,
health (particularly AIDS and vector-borne diseases), population, media,
forestry, and maritime fields. Information services are provided
regionally and to a wide range of clients.

Duties will include:

Efficient management of Library operations
Development of the Library collection
Provision of timely information services to SPC programmes and clients
Development of new information services
Cataloguing, classification and indexing
Training in library information processing and information retrieval

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a degree in Librarianship or Information
Science or a post-graduate qualification in Library Science with relevant
work experience in a special, research or tertiary library. Experience
with automated Library systems and in cataloguing, classification and
indexing processes are required.
A tertiary qualification in biological, agricultural or health
sciences will be an advantage.


SALARY AND ALLOWANCE

The starting salary for this position will be SDR 1,389 per month which is
equivalent to F$3,834 per month. In addition, an Establishment Grant will
be payable to non-residents of Fiji. SPC emoluments are not subject to
income tax in Fiji at the present time. The international currency
exchange rate at the time of writing is approximately USD 1.00 = F$2.00.

The appointment will be for a period of three years.

Suva, Fiji.


ACCOMMODATION

A rental assistance of F$1100 per month will be provided.


LEAVE

Leave will accrue at the rate of 25 working days per calendar month of
active duty. For expatriation staff members, home leave fares are payable
after three years of service and if contract is renewed.


SICK LEAVE

Thirty working days per annum


MEDICAL BENEFITS

The SPC's Staff Medical Scheme, to which the appointee will contribute
1.5% of basic salary, reimburses doctors' fees, cost of prescribed
medicines, surgical and hospital costs, etc. up to certain percentages and
limits.


PROVIDENT FUND

The appointee will be eligible for membership of the SPC's Staff Provident
Fund. The staff member contributes eight per cent of basic salary to which
SPC adds a matching contribution.


FARES AND REMOVAL EXPENSES

For an appointee recruited outside Fiji, airfares by the most direct/and
or economic route for the appointee and recognised dependents, and
reasonable removal expenses by sea of personal and household effects will
be met by SPC on appointment and termination.


COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT

SPC has a standardised computing environment based on Microsoft Office
running under Microsoft Windows.


SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT

Smoking is not permitted in the workplace.
