So, Attilla, is your CSC server dripping molten copper onto the floor? Once the eclipse is behind us, love to see your CPU or access trends graph.

Good luck with solar eclipse! : )
Hello all! I just wanted to wish everyone the best of luck with catching the solar eclipse, whether you are travelling to the totality or hoping to catch a great deep partial from Ottawa! Denis Legault and I are in Sherbrooke, looking forward to a great show this afternoon! Not that I do not have access to my regular email address at the moment. Allan Rahill (retired CMC meteorologist and amateur astronomer) just wrote an update after many people asked him where the cirrus clouds will be located ahead of the eclipse. He recommends going between Sherbrooke and Mont Megantic to give the best prospects. Clear skies all, and I look forward to reading or hearing about your observations and images!!! :D - Pierre

request for a presentation to kids from a teacher
A teacher has emailed me asking about: --------------------------- slighty edited -------------------------------- my Grade 5-6 students will be exploring and inquiring about the intricacies of the universe and matter. ... I am actively seeking engaging learning opportunities for them beyond the classroom. I was wondering if your group would be hosting events, lessons or other educational initiatives that my students could partake in to further enrich and expand their exploration of space. For instance, would they be able to attend a gathering, or would someone be interested in coming to teach them about astronomy? It would be a group of 10 students, myself, mostly likely another teacher. ------------------------- /slighty edited ---------------------- I've put her in touch with the Ottawa RASC, which in the past, has presented to kids. I've also directed her to the Carp star party page. But if there are OAFs with the prepared material and skill to present to kids, let me know and I will put you in contact with the teacher. clear skies. -attilla danko.

Eclipse Glasses recommendation 5
Hi Folks, I'm looking for recommendations from a reliable (aka safe) source. I'll be heading down to Malone NY for the eclipse no matter the weather as I'll be combining two things I love: astro and fly fishing. I can't wait to see if the bite is on during totality. Cheers, Albert.

Anyone have a Nexstar-GPS mount with the "GPS Align" feature?
The earlier shipments of the Celestron Nexstar-GPS mounts included a "GPS align" feature, whereby one just pointed the mount North, turned it on, and it would self-align for the night. This feature got removed in later handset firmware, due to Celestron losing a lawsuit to Meade regarding that feature. Does anyone here in the Ottawa area still have a Nexstar-GPS with that feature? A downside of the older firmware with that feature, is that it suffers from a "GPS roll-over" bug, requiring that the operator enter the current date by hand. A hobby of mine is building electronic accessories for Celestron mounts, which one can discover by going to https://rtr.ca/hbg3/ I suspect the "GPS rollover" bug can be corrected by inserting one of these devices between the Celestron hand-controller and the mount. But I don't have that mount, so no way to learn more about the issue, and have it implement a workaround. If anyone reading does have that version of the Nexstar-GPS, then please get in touch. Cheers -- Mark Lord

Excellent Geminids about to peak! 3
Hello all! Raynomd and I are on our way to the Cincinnati Dark Sky site (near Peebles, Ohio) to be in an optimal area for the Geminids for tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday nights! We’re heading to the same site that we went for the 2012 Geminids. The clouds do look like they will part Ottawa region on Wednesday night! I would urge everyone to give the excellent Geminids a try and report what you see. Thursday night could also offer good rates and possibly brighter meteors as the rates begin to decline. The peak time this year falls in the middle of the afternoon on the 14th. So I would definitely recommend observing on both the Wednesday and Thursday nights! Cheers! Pierre

Two images of M45 taken one year apart. 2
Two images of M45 two years apart. The first one is at a FL of 590mm with a OCS camera. The second is at 400mm with LRGB. The new pixinsight add ons make processing much simplier. Hopefully the processing quality has improved too.

2023 Solar annular eclipse 4
Sorry for being a little late with these. These were taken at Cochiti Lake in NM, a little off the center path of totality. Taken with Sigma 150-600mm DG HSM at 600mm and Canon R6. Also, sorry about the too small file size. I can upload larger files when I finally drive back to Ottawa :).

Did anyone else see the payload from tonight's SpaceX launch? 5
I'm praying what I saw was a SpaceX launch. If not, I want to be the first to welcome our alien overlords. The event was a first for me -- it was like a ballet. I was watching the night sky, minding my own business, say, about 20:30, when two bright stars moved across the sky from west to east -- but they couldn't be stars. They moved in tight arcs across the sky -- was rocket power making them move in non-ballistic trajectories? Later (wasn't timing -- 15 minutes?), a train of ten-ish or so objects spanning perhaps 10 degrees, shrouded in a glowing haze, fly overhead in a straight line, moving west to east. Later still (wasn't timing because I wasn't expecting even more weirdness this evening -- another 15 minutes?) ten-ish bright stars in a train each spaced, say, 5 degrees apart, move across the sky from northwest to southeast. What did I see?

A question for the AP crew...
Hello OAFs, OAOG... I'm rebuilding a fairly large gallery of my personal photos (mostly family), with a small portion (5%?) of astronomy photos. I tend to do things in groups chronologically, and I'm okay with that, but well, of course, if I'm interested in moon photos, I don't necessarily want to see the DSOs mixed in the list. The simple solution is a table that has time down the left side and categories across the top. Because of the tool I'm using, I have limitations for the number of columns. I was thinking of grouping things like this: Gear Nightscapes, the Milky Way, comets Constellations, asterisms, stars and star trails The Sun The Moon Planets, including conjunctions and asteroids Globular and open clusters Galaxies and nebulae I'm not hard-core AP, in fact I haven't done much astronomy stuff at all in recent years, but looking to get back into it. Are there other APers out there with anal-retentive tendencies who distinguish between groupings and simple tags? Views welcome... Paul

Guidance for telescope purchase 11
Good morning, I’m looking for some guidance. I’m sure this question has been asked hundreds of times before however I suspect the technology changes. Right off let me say thank you for your patience. I’d like to buy a telescope for my son’s family. They would use it both in Ottawa and at our cottage. I’d like something that will be relevant for the foreseeable future, can be moved from one location to another easily and provides very good visuals. Not knowing about telescopes I’m not sure what to ask, what I can tell you is my son always says when at the cottage we should get a telescope and take advantage of this. The more specific the suggestions the better. Thanks to you all, best, Leslie
