THAT was mind blowing!!! And I caught trout before totality. I didn't realize how amazing the naked eye view would be. Saw prominences naked eye!!?? On Mon, Apr 8, 2024, 3:41?PM Attilla Danko <danko@...> wrote:

Took a chance and dragged the kids to Cornwall.? Got lucky, had great views of the entire eclipse.? Noted two bright prominences with the naked eye.? Seeing Jupiter and Venus was really neat.? Also, noted that the spring peepers (frogs) started to sing soon after totality began, I guess they thought it was evening!!? The corona was larger and much more prominent than I was expecting, the whole thing took my breath away.? I didn't expect it to look just like the pictures I had seen, but it really did.? The temperature drop was very noticeable.? The diamond ring effect right at the end was a surprise, very white light instead of the orangish colour I was expecting.? But then it was time to put the glasses back on. Really, really fantastic experience for us.? I understand why people travel for this experience over and over again.

I was ecstatic to take in the event my hometown of Sydenham, just north of Kingston. Skies were cloudy until right before totality. Mind blowing. My brother convinced a bunch of locals to come out to join our family at our football field, and we had travellers from Ajax and Ottawa join us as well. My photos were great, but my video of the crowd going dark, and my exuberance, is just a treat. Take a look, totality starts at 1:15: Tim On Mon, Apr 8, 2024, 3:41 p.m. Attilla Danko <danko@...> wrote:

Just got back from Magog, QC, where the skies were beautifully clear except for a deck of cirrus clouds in the south west.? Was planning to watch from Granby, but that cloud deck looked threatening when I arrived there. Kept heading east until I was certain the clouds wouldn't interfere with the show. And what a show! Venus at Jupiter were clearly visible well before totality. The cloud deck on the horizon made it easy to see where the Moon's shadow ended far off to the south. Beautiful view of two prominences through binoculars. Saw a wispy corona with a dark steak winding through it. And the diamond ring at the end was breathtaking.?
Traffic going in was very heavy but moving. We packed up and headed for home shortly after totality ended, and we faced surprisingly little traffic until we were almost at Autoroute 30 south of Montreal. However, according to radio traffic reports, by that time Autoroute 10 was stop and go from Magog right through to Autoroute 30. Glad we left when we did.? ?No spouses were consumed in this trip? |
I planned on driving to Granby as soon as we saw the forecast in the morning.? ?Unfortunately we had to "heard the cats" (two teenagers) so we did not leave until 11 am.? ?The trafik was heavy with long delays around Montreal.? ?Looked like there were a lot of people heading East, not sure if eclipse related or just "normal".? ? We got delayed to the point that we decided to pull along the Hwy 112 about 18 km before Granby at 15:00.? We run out of time to get clear of the clouds but the conditions were quite good.? We had very few very diffuse high level cirrus clouds.? The corona was much bigger than I expected and we saw seven? prominences.? ?I made a mistake of telling the kids to grab their cameras but they failed to study and practice as instructed and make notes for the settings so I wasted time trying to do it quickly for them with little time left.? I was hoping to get to a spot with 3 minutes and 10 seconds of totality but where we had to settle for we got 2 minutes and 49 seconds so I run out of time to do my planned 7-9 sot bracketed sequence.? But I did have time for the prominences and the diamond? ring and a few three shot brackets.? ? Told the kids to snap some pics with their phones and forget the camera and just enjoy the show.? ?I did the same in the end. The kids and adults were thrilled and that is what it was all about. :). P.S. I hope to see some pictures here from others in the coming days.? ?The picture will show the clouds we had. |
It didn't look anything at all like the zillions of eclipse photos

i've seen. No substitute for the dynamic range and the color saturation (of the prominences) in the real time view. On Mon, Apr 8, 2024 at 9:17?PM Matt Weeks <weeksmj@...> wrote:

Sorry, hope this is OK.? Some shots from 18 km West of Granby QC.? Just?CR3 files converter to smaller jpg files and cropped a bit; no post processing or stacking; had no time yet :).? Taken with R6 and RF200-800mmm at ~400mm. |
Plan A was to view the eclipse with the kids in Brockville.? As the forecast changed, we planned to go to Cornwall, then Les Cedres just outside of Montreal.? I packed up the kids at 1pm and made it to Les Cedres by 2:30.? We?decided to keep driving south east until 3pm and ended up in Sainte Martine under mostly a clear sky.? The drive further south allowed us to experience totatlity for about 2min45seconds.?
This is one of the few recently expereinces which surpassed the hype.? My boys who are 5 and 7 were very impressed and don't yet understand how special this was.? They are looking forward to next years eclipse... I made the decision not to bring any astro-photography gear to enjoy the expereince without distractions.? This was the right decision, as an astro-photographer it's easy to forget just how much better things look in person. Greg |
