I have read Nie wroca bociany na Graniczna. Mr Wiernik does write well and with humour, he has written a few other books worth reading, they are on my kresy books pages

It is a kind of book that, from a Polish point of view, could be subtitled: Polish history in the XXth cent. AS IT REALLY WAS...
Also, it is written with great verve and sensitivity - riveting. For those who can read Polish, I highly recommend a book published in the UK by Caldra House Ltd (1998): Nie wroca bociany na Graniczna - opowiesc kresowa. Written by a London based Romuald Wiernik, it's a story of a small town in Volynia - its carefree pre-war existence, then both occupations, and then the Ukrainian 'problems'. Comprehensive List of Kresy Refugees to Africa and beyond

bert_bakker41

Dear subscribers,

I have received a large number of requests to check on family names
in the list which has kindly been lent to me by Edward, an old
Polish gentleman who still lives in Tanganyika not far from the old
Tengeru camp.
I have faithfully replied to everybody - as well I should - having
made the offer myself.
However, I have slightly underestimated the number of interested
persons who have come forward.

I have meanwhile made frantic efforts in the South African town
where I live to see whether I could have the list scanned or
photocopied. It proved impossible; the size of the list is akward.
Scanning it bit by bit is no option because the paper is fragile.

I am going to Holland next week and I hope that I can have the list
scanned there onto a CD.

Please bear with me for a few weeks.

Kind regards,

Bert Bakker

Re: Contacting MoD UK Polish Section

Hi,
?
When I started looking for my family members, I wrote to MoD in Middlesex and within a short time I had a reply from them and they confirmed that my uncle was in the British Army, but would not disclose further information without permission from the Next of Kin. I found them helpful and understood their reasons.

Hi,

I noticed that many have had a few problems with MoD UK. I thought
that a few hints or tips may help when dealing with them.
The key issue that you will need to show MoD is that you are the
legal next of kin (NOK). If you are not then you need to have
written authority from the NOK. I know that it can be an issue if
you don't always have the details. However, my advise is to take the
standing that unless you know a closer relative that is alive then
you probably are the NOK.

You will have to sign an MoD Form 1000 Kinship form stating your
relationship and send in copies of proff of that relationship i.e.
marriage, birth, death certificates.

My letter enquiries were taking 10 days to turn round within UK.

Here are some details from thier web site:

Dear Bert,

I would be happy to help make a database of the list - would you be able to photocopy the pages?? If 14 of us took a thousand names each and used a template so all the pages could be copied and pasted into one spreadsheed, it would be quicker than one person working alone - or if 28 would take 500 names, it could be even faster??? We could work in pairs so the typing of one person is checked by another to make it as accurate a list as possible.? It would be a smaller file to upload than a scan and possibly easier to read.

What does the team think?

My day was made by the phone call from Tony, very pleasant, tinged with some sadness, but at least we know that we will be able to meet at some stage and I look forward to meeting the families and getting to know them better. I will be telling my family about this great news when I speak to them at the weekend. You all have a great weekend and I am truly greatful for all the help and support I have had from one and all.

looking turned out to be my cousin, who I had no idea existed!

I would like to say a big "HELLO" to my cousin Anna Coates. It was

Re: Contacting MoD UK Polish Section

Hi Stefan,

I must apologise for giving the wrong address to the
group! Good job Bob was paying attention!

I understand that all Govt/MoD departments in UK have
a charter to answer the publics requests promptly and
communicate effectively. Moving base and not updating
websites etc does not sound to me as if they are on
top of this charter. I might just see if I can make
that point with them and see if they will update the
web site, place the MoD form 1000 on line for down
loading and accept email requests if only to give
yes/no answers. Or at least find out if it is in the
pipeline. It would save them time and money. The
objection might be that they want to register and
allocate a reference number first. However, that just
requires a flip in the process to change and makes
them more accessable to the general public.
It seems that they are moving from Nissan huts near
Millhill to an RAF base down the road at North Holt. I
suspect a few Poles have flow Spitfires and Hurricanes
out of that airfield in its time. Hopefully
communications can be improved on such a large base.
Need to find a friendly RAF Officer to see if he can
help out!

In your view do you think that the Sikorski Institute
could be coached round to being more 'user friendly'?
Or is it a lost cause? I am interested in a challenge
and if there was even a small chance of changing their
attitude would be willing to take it on. Of course it
would probably have to be in specific areas rather
than across the board. From your experience what is
the most requested information from the Institute.
Perhaps we could poll it on the board to find out?
Maybe even volunteer to set a website up for them?

Some things never change.... stores are for storing
sir or they would be called sign here and hand outs!
And now it seems archives are for archiving!

Be Interested to know your views on this.

Regards

Stephen

One point, MOD does not reply to e-mails - probably
their e-mail address is
obsolete.

As for SI, they are not currently in the information
access business like
MOD is. Perhaps in the future?

Hi Anna,
?
At the moment I already have another enquiry going through the Misja Katolicka (my third) and so don't feel?that I can pester them anymore. But their address is on the K-S-group website if you want to follow this enquiry yourself. However, I would assume that the tapestry - if it hung in the headmaster's room - would have gone with the headmaster.
?
To be honest, I don't know exactly what has happened to the rest of the camp. I should have explained more clearly about my cousin's trip - she and her husband actually went to completely the wrong location. Hence them finding no trace of the cemetary either. If we'd gone along with what they had told us, then we would never have discovered that my grandfather's grave still exists.

Hi there,
?
I am surprised to hear that the school has turned into a housing project, my son attended the boarding school from Grade 3, he was very happy there and only the other evening we were talking about this, because in the headmaster's office, there was a tapestry hanging that was done by the Polish ladies at the farm at that time, maybe you can ask Polish Missionary to make enquiries to see what has happened to this tapestry. It would be an absolute shame if it has been destroyed. I will see if I can locate the previous headmaster who as far as I know is in New Zealand and see if he can shed some light on this item. It should by all rights be returned to the Polish Community. My mother was in the Refugee Camp in Rusape.
Please let me know how you get on with this enquiry.

Halina Szulakowska wrote:
Hi,
?
Following on from Bert Bakker's email about the cemetary at Tengeru, I just wanted to mention another Polish site at Marandellas.
?
My mother's family were based here, although Mama attended the girl's boarding school at Digglefold. It was in Marandellas that my Dziadek, Piotr Brodalka, died in 1945. He is buried in the cemetary that was close to the camp.
?
Until recently (about 2 years ago) we weren't quite?sure about what had happened to this graveyard. We were prompted to investigate when my cousin and her husband travelled to Zimbabwe to find the?old camp, and reported back to us that the place had been replaced by a new housing devlopemnt. This, as you can imagine, upset my mother greatly. So I rang the embassy of Zimbabwe in London several times to ask for information, but drew a blank - they really weren't interested in helping.
?
It was then that somebody suggested we write to the Misja Katolicka in London to see if they could help us. Through them, we were given the name and address of a Polish missionary based not far from Morondera. We sent him a letter. A few weeks later, back came a reply that he had travelled to Morondera and managed to locate the Polish cemetary. He said it was very overgrown and that some of the stone crosses had been broken. But, he also promised us that he would clean the graveyard - this he did with help from people in his parish.
?
We now have photos of my grandfather's grave.
?
My mother still writes to the priest and we send him donations to help with the unkeep of the cemetary.
?
I also mention this now, because All Soul's Day is?approaching and many Poles will be visiting their family's graves. We will be in Rugby where my Babcia and Tata are buried. But, it will also be good to know that the Polish graves in Morondera will also be blessed again this year.

Hi Group,
Coincidentally I was in?Borders bookstore yesterday with my son and the book "A Question of Honor" was there!? A brief quote from the jacket:? "A Question of Honor also gives us a revelatory history of Poland during World War II and of the many thousands in the Polish armed forces who fought with the Allies.? It tells of the country's unending struggle against both Hitler and Stalin, its long battle for independence, and the tragic collapse of that dream in the "peace" that followed......."
and Robert Conquest's review: "This book presents us with one of the most disgraceful ethical horrors of WW II - how, believing the need to support Stalin at all costs, we discredited, and later neglected, our oldest, bravest, and most trustworthy ally in order to conceal the truth of a revolting crime."
Looks like a good read :-)??? janie

Archives seem to be all over the place. I found my mothers birth certificate and finally obtained one fo her (she is now 78!) by going to the Gmina in Chelm which is the nearest town to the village where she was born which was Majdan Plawaniecki in 1925 whether archives dating back as far as that will be housed in similar fashion one never knows.

hello,

His name was ?Franciszek Wosko.? He was born in Poland in 1921.
He fought with the 2nd Corps under Anders.
He met my mother in Chieti Italy; they married and next went to Buenos Aires where my brother was born. They finally came to the US in about 1955.
What started out as a Polish friend translating some documents for me has turned into the beginning of a curious, bittersweet journey for me.
I will contact the ministry for definitives, but I have his army card and some other papers.
I am looking for anyone who may have known my father or someone who has family that followed a similar path?

I am interested in the Kresny-Siberia group because my deceased mother (Mary Mikolajczyk) and her family (parents and two older brothers) were deported in February 1940 from Eastern Poland (Village of Granotow) to a work camp in Archangelsk, Russia. ?She was from a Catholic family that was not particularly prominent or political. ?Her father (Felix Mikolajczyk) was left in the middle of the forest when the railroad cattle cars came to a stop on their journey northward. ?My mother searched for him through the Red Cross and eventually presumed he froze to death near that railroad stop. ?She and her mother were released from the labor camp when her brothers agreed to fight with the Allies under Anders. ?Her brother Anthony lost a wife and child in Archangelsk and later fought at Monte Cassino. ?My mother and grandmother crossed the Atlantic by agreeing to serve as kitchen help on an American hospital ship. ?My mother, grandmother (Anna Mikolaj! czyk) and her brother Joseph were at the Santa Rosa Camp before entering the United States via Laredo, Texas.

I am especially interested in books about the Poles who shared my mother's experience that are aimed at the 9-12 year old audience. ?One of my children has shown an interest in learning about the topic.

of horse archery and mounted `winged hussar' lancers of the Polish
Lithuanian Commonwealth. We will also offer the adult public hands-
on matchlock musket, pike, saber, and cannon classes, and have
costume shows, games, music, and other activities for kids.

We are especially pleased that Lukas Novotny, head instructor for the
2003 International Horse Archery Festival, will be demonstrating his
skills for us in a special appearance.

________

Also, on Nov. 1-2, 2003 at Fort Randolf in Point Plesant WVA, our
group is participating in the reenactment of the Siege of Torun in
1658. Cannons, hussars, and more! Most activities are planned in the
early afternoon (noon to 3PM).

Hello Ken,
In your introductory mail to the group, you said a lady in Poland was helping you find
information about your great-grandfather who had been deported to Siberia and
dispossessed. How did you find this lady? Was she someone you met in Poland
who has access to archives?
My great-great-grandfather too was deported after the 1863 uprising, and their land
near Lublin was seized. But I have not been able to figure out how to find out any
further information. Do you have any suggestions?
