I am interested in the Kresny-Siberia group
because my deceased mother (Mary Mikolajczyk) and her family (parents and two
older brothers) were deported in February 1940 from Eastern Poland (Village of
Granotow) to a work camp in Archangelsk, Russia. ?She was from a Catholic
family that was not particularly prominent or political. ?Her father
(Felix Mikolajczyk) was left in the middle of the forest when the railroad
cattle cars came to a stop on their journey northward. ?My mother
searched for him through the Red Cross and eventually presumed he froze to
death near that railroad stop. ?She and her mother were released from the
labor camp when her brothers agreed to fight with the Allies under Anders.
?Her brother Anthony lost a wife and child in Archangelsk and later
fought at Monte Cassino. ?My mother and grandmother crossed the Atlantic
by agreeing to serve as kitchen help on an American hospital ship. ?My
mother, grandmother (Anna Mikolaj! czyk) and her brother Joseph were at the
Santa Rosa Camp before entering the United States via Laredo, Texas.
I
am especially interested in books about the Poles who shared my mother's
experience that are aimed at the 9-12 year old audience. ?One of my
children has shown an interest in learning about the topic.
