I have read Nie wroca bociany na Graniczna. Mr Wiernik does write well and with humour, he has written a few other books worth reading, they are on my kresy books pages

Hallo Group, I've just swallowed up For Your Freedom and Ours,
The Kosciuszko Squadron: Forgotten Heroes of World War II (this is the title of the British edition, in US it's Question of Honour).Written by an American couple Lynne Olson aND Stanley Cloud, completely unconnected with Poland, hence the 'objective outsiders', it's a book which I think every Pole should buy to pass on to their children and grandchildren - as well as to pass around their sceptical Western friends!
The story of the heroic pilots, written with humour and sympathy,
seems to serve as a pretext to show the history of Poland this century - from the 1920 war, through German and Soviet invasions, the resistance, Polish contribution to war effort on different fronts, Battle of Britain, of course, Warsaw Rising, to the infamous Victory Parade. They have done excellent research, and there is an array of documents illustrating American and British politicians' shabby behaviour leading up to the Yalta decisions, hence less known.
It is a kind of book that, from a Polish point of view, could be subtitled: Polish history in the XXth cent. AS IT REALLY WAS...
Also, it is written with great verve and sensitivity - riveting. For those who can read Polish, I highly recommend a book published in the UK by Caldra House Ltd (1998): Nie wroca bociany na Graniczna - opowiesc kresowa. Written by a London based Romuald Wiernik, it's a story of a small town in Volynia - its carefree pre-war existence, then both occupations, and then the Ukrainian 'problems'. It's riveting and at times very funny, and shows the complexity of the tragedy of the Polish Kresy population better than anything I have read in a novel... You can get it through the POSK Bookshop in London.
Have a good read!
