Re: Daniel family of Rowan County, NC

I assume that the Peter Daniel in question is the ancestor (supposed) of the Brunswick and Dinwiddie County, VA Daniels who moved to Halifax and then to other North Carolina Counties? It seems like there may be some confusion between the Brunswick and Middlesex Peter Daniels? I thought Woodson was in the Middlesex line, or were there Woodsons in both families? I have not looked at either line for some time.

The potential high level haplogroup of the line of Ambrose Daniel is not proved, as there was an NPE in the line of the descendant that was tested. As far as I am aware, no proved descendant of the line of Peter Daniel has taken a Y DNA test, but I could be wrong about that as not everyone in the Daniel DNA Project has listed their claimed ancestor. If anyone is aware of a proved descendant of Peter Daniel of Brunswick who has taken a Y DNA test, that would useful information to post to this forum... Otherwise, we would have to conclude that the potential high level haplogroup of that line is not known.

The Y DNA of the line of Roger Daniel has not been proved. To prove the Y DNA of a paternal line, living direct male descendants of two sons of an ancestor, Roger Daniel in this case, would have to first be proved using primary records and then their Y DNA would need to match. So far, no primary record evidence has been presented which proves a descendant of one son of Roger Daniel, so it not even possible to speculate as to what haplogroup his direct male descendants had/have. Since there could be the potential for breaks in the line of Y DNA of one son, descendants of two sons of an ancestor proved using primary records must be tested and match to prove the Y DNA of an ancestor with reasonable confidence.

If primary record evidence has been compiled to prove the identity of a descendant of at least one son of Roger Daniel, this forum would be a good place to document it or to provide a link to a source that does. Primary record evidence which proves the identity of descendants of two sons would be ideal.

The above being said, the high level haplogroups of Peter Daniel and Roger Daniel are not known unless two proved descendants from each line have taken a Y DNA test. Has that happened?

Best,

Kevin

Hello James,

?

I was speaking to you earlier on the Daniel message board. I then realized that you & I have communicated before, in December 2019, on Ancestry. I just reread your message from back then. At the time, you said you had yet to connect John to William Mack, but then later you referred to William as "John's bro." I don't think that I caught that the first time that I read it because of what you said next, which caught my eye--that William Mack was a co-owner of Meltons Mill. I have often wondered if William's wife, Eliza Ann Melton, was Phillip Melton's daughter. The DNA matches suggest that she could be, & the fact that she & William named their second son Phillip also suggests that. However, almost no one has her listed as his daughter, in fact I think I was the first one on Ancestry to link them together. Not to mention that a descendent of their daughter, Avis Caroline, said it was passed down that William & Eliza lived in far eastern Tennessee, near Iron Mountain, until after their second daughter, Lucinda Jane, was born. That piece of information sort of threw a monkey wrench in trying to tie Eliza to Phillip & William to Joseph Daniel's family. It has also been passed down that Eliza was at least partially Native American. I don't know anything about her mother, so that's a possibility...not to mention that my mother knew Eliza & William's granddaughter (my mother's grandmother), & my mother always thought her grandmother was a full-blooded native, partly because of how she looked & acted, but also because she mentioned being native to my mom & said that she had turned down land in Oklahoma because she wanted to stay in Missouri.

?

As for Elizabeth Green, who was Phillip Melton's wife when he died, I don't believe that she was the mother of his children. They had only been married for about 10 years at the time of his death.

?

The reason that I spelled Joseph's nickname as possibly "Joab" is because that is how it's spelled in a letter that Joseph & Elizabeth's son, William, wrote when trying to help Elizabeth get her widow's pension. I wasn't sure if this was William Mack or the older William, because supposedly the older William was already dead by the time the letter was written (1853). And, the son who wrote the letter lived in Lawrence County, TN. On the 1850 census, William Mack is the only William Daniel that I see in Lawrence County.

?

What are you looking for as proof of ancestry for descendants of this line? As I mentioned when I replied to your message on the message board, I have my DNA test at Ancestry, GEDmatch & Family Tree DNA.?

?

My Ancestry profile is:

?

On WikiTree, I am listed as a descendent of William Mack. My GEDmatch number can be found there, also.

?

By the way, I saw from your message on Ancestry that your middle initial is "M." Is James M. Daniel a family name that's been passed down? William & Eliza's first son's name was James M., & I believe that John also named one of his sons James M (James Madison).?

John Daniel 1730 to after 1765 of Essex/Caroline/Cumberland/Goochland, Virginia

I am looking for any information about John Daniel 25 June 1730 - after 1767 of Cumberland and Goochland Counties, VA.

My ancestor, Thomas Daniel 1750-1825, was probably the son of John and Elizabeth Daniel of Essex/Caroline, Cumberland and Goochland Counties, VA. I say probably because during the Civil War most primary records in Caroline County and virtually all primary records in King & Queen County, Virginia were lost. The Daniel family lived in Caroline close to the King? & Queen (and Essex) line and there are several indications they were in all three counties.

The Daniel family of Caroline County, VA, which descends from William Daniel 1680-1765 of Essex and Caroline Counties, has been reconstructed by proving the Y DNA? of descendants of three sons of William Daniel 1680-1765. Details of how this was done are available at:

At any rate, Y DNA, residence patterns and naming patterns place my Thomas Daniel 1750-1825 as a descendant of William Daniel 1680-1765, and based on what can be proved and what is currently known of this family, he best fits as a son of John and Elizabeth Daniel. He named is first son John, second William and third Thomas.

John was in Cumberland County in 1763 when he bought land from William Daniel. William Daniel bought this land in 1755 and in that deed he is described as "William Daniel of Caroline County". John and William were probably sons of Thomas Daniel 1707-1738 and Mary Rowzee. The full birth dates of their four sons (James b. 1728, John b. 1730, William b. 1732 and Thomas b. 1734)? were given in guardianship records for these children associated with the estate of Thomas 1707-1738.

John Daniel's guardian was his uncle, William Daniel Jr. 1705-1783, who also had a son John 1725-1799, so it is often difficult distinguish these two John's in Caroline County, VA court records, until John, son of Thomas 1707-1738, moved to Cumberland County.

John and William Daniel 1732-1765 of Cumberland County, VA both sold their land in 1765 and left the county. John's wife Elizabeth and William's wife Patsy, released their dower rights (There were two unrelated William/Patsy Daniels in Cumberland at this time). In 1767, John Daniel traveled ("twice coming and returning 45 miles") back to Cumberland County to bear witness at a trial (William Watters vs William Davenport). John was compensated 320 lbs of tobaccos. The Cumberland County courthouse was at now in Powhatan County, VA in 1767.

Charles Brunk Heinemann, in Daniel Families of the Southern States, placed William and John in Goochland, seemingly after leaving, Cumberland, but does not state how he made that conclusion. He was also convinced, just short of making the assignment, that the maiden name of John's wife Elizabeth was Lewis. John Daniel 1725-1799, my John's first cousin, was closely associated with the Lewis and Meriwether families. Again, Heinemann does not explain how he arrived at the conclusion that the maiden name of Elizabeth was Lewis. It really bugs me when people don't explain their reasoning! I wish CBH was still alive so I could give him a piece of my mind. CBH was a close collaborator of my father's first cousin, also a genealogist, but she never came close to making correct assignments for our Daniels, but that is another rant.?

Anyway..... Goochland records are locked on FamilySearch, so if anyone has transcriptions of Goochland records, knows about the Daniel families who were living there in the 1750s-1780s, please keep me in mind!

Thanks!

Oh, wonderful! I almost mentioned John Buckley. One of William Mack's sons, William Mack Jr., named one of his sons John William Buckley Daniel, so I thought there might be a connection. But, I wasn't really sure of John Buckley's family history, either. I have my DNA test on Ancestry, GEDmatch & Family Tree DNA. Do you want to look me up on one of those sites, or should I email you privately?

It's great to see some conversation going on in the group. I thought I would jump it to ask (again) if anyone has information on William Mack Daniel's (1805-1890) family history. It would be great to find some male Daniel descendants, but I personally don't know anyone from this branch of my family. There seems to be a connection via DNA to Joseph (Job/Joab) Daniel's descendants, & many have William listed as Joseph's son in their trees. I have seen at least one person dispute this connection.

William Mack Daniel was born in NC, married Eliza Ann Melton (1817-1904) in Tennessee (they lived in Lawrence County in 1850). They moved to Reynolds County, MO by 1860, then Sharp County, AR by 1870, then they were in Hot Spring County, AR, by 1880 & lived there the rest of his life. His partial biography is listed in the Daniel DNA Project with all the other participating families, but there is no Y-DNA kit associated with him. Re: Daniel/ Stith connections

BTW, current DNA/research information about the Middlesex Daniels is publicly available on Pam Miller's site:

http://pamiller.net/genealogy/docs/danielmiddlesex/danieldna/

Re: Daniel/ Stith connections

BTW, the Thomas Daniel who married Elizabeth Stith is a descendant of James Daniel, the non-biological son of William Daniel of Middlesex. James and Margaret Vivion Daniel > Charles and Jane Mickelborough Daniel > Thomas and Elizabeth Stith Daniel.

It is interesting to note that some of the most prominent members of the Middlesex Daniel family were descendants of James Daniel the non-biological son of William Daniel of Middlesex County, VA. The men of this line of the family were extremely long lived for generations, routinely living into their 80s and even 90s. Y DNA results, so far, suggest that the father of James Daniel had the surname Davis. A very early participant in the Daniel DNA Project, the first supposed descendant of William of Middlesex, was a descendant of James Daniel. This caused some confusion!

Also, based on Y DNA results, it appears that William Daniel of Middlesex had clan ancestry, possibly Irish or Scottish. The closest matches to this line in high marker tests have the surname Wood/Woods, Jones and Hanks in common, but there are matches to other surnames, as well. This is often a sign of clan ancestry. I was recently contacted by the manager of the BigY Facebook group who also happens to be a Wood who closely matches this Daniel line at 111 markers (110/111). He has motivated some descendants of William of Middlesex to do Big Y 700 testing which may soon shed some light on the ancestry of the Daniel family of Middlesex County, VA revealing their terminal SNP. This is all discussed publicly on the BigY group on Facebook and in the Wood discussion group. I am not a member of either group, so may not get the latest news on this research but will share what happens when I find out the results.

Best,

Kevin

Re: Daniel/ Stith connections

A quick Google search turned up the following.

From:

http://roots4u.blogspot.com/2020/06/racism-and-genealogy-or-musings-of.html

"Thomas married well, and upon his marriage to Elizabeth Stith in 1770 he was given a slave woman named Frank as a wedding gift by Elizabeth's uncle. I show my audience that following a man with a very common name like Thomas Daniel through Virginia and Kentucky can be tied together by following Frank and her children.

Thomas acquired Frank in Stafford County, Virginia, in 1770. He argued in court in Caroline County, Virginia, for his right to own her and her two sons, Reuben and Humphrey, "and all her increase" at the settlement of his uncle's estate in 1782 and 1783. Thomas was taxed on slaves Frank, Reuben, Humphrey, Clary, Sally/Celia, and Jude in Louisa County, Virginia, in 1782 and 1783. In 1795, Thomas Daniel of Jefferson County, Kentucky, sold Reuben, aged about 25; and Humphry, aged about 24; to Robert Breckenridge.

In 1797, Thomas Daniel divested his fourteen slaves in Jefferson County, Kentucky, to his children.? Apparently Reuben and Humphrey were back in his possession, as Frank and Reuben were given to his son Thomas Daniel Jr., while Humphrey went to son, Stith Daniel. "

Re: Daniel/ Stith connections

Hi Joe,
?? This is off the top of my head but..... Thomas Daniel married Elizabeth Stith in Louisa County, VA (?) before 1770. They moved to Caroline County, Va in the 1770s where Thomas sued the estate of his father-in-law for several years. I think the father-in-law died in Louisa (?). I think this is a Middlesex County, VA Daniel line, maybe from James, the non-biological son of William of Middlesex. I'm certain this is a well documented line.

??? Thomas and Elizabeth Stith Daniel moved to Kentucky in the 1790s, Jefferson County, I think. Their son Stith appears in the early 1790s tax lists in that county. I believe that both Thomas and Elizabeth died in the 1790s, maybe in Kentucky, so the Thomas Daniel Sr. in later records was their son who had a son named Thomas. There is a court record in Jefferson or Shelby that mentions their deaths but I don't think there is a probate there...

??? Here it gets a bit tricky as there was a Thomas Daniel from the line of William Daniel (William > William >? John > Thomas) of Caroline in the same counties, Jefferson/Shelby after 1800. I have not been able to sort them out.

??? Pretty sure the Thomas Sr. and Jr. in Shelby County, were the descendants of Thomas and Elizabeth Stith Daniel.

?? I will dig a little deeper into this when I get a chance and try to be more definitive.

Best,

Kevin

Daniel/ Stith connections

Was just wondering if anyone knows of any family connection between the Daniel's ( Shelby county KY ) and the family name Stith. The reason for the question is using my dad's autosomal dna kit I have a couple of matches who appear to be sisters, that are apparent descendants of David Daniel b 1804 NC d abt 1870 LA, this David is also a y-dna match to me, when I go to shared matches with these sisters I get three males with the last name Stith( I know this dna could come from anywhere but so far I have not found any other connections dna wise). As mentioned my 4th GGrandfather lived in Shelby county KY , in the 1800 tax/census list was a Stith Daniel as well as a Thomas sr and Thomas jr. (it is not clear if these two were father and son ) , but it appears Thomas jr married a Forsythe woman and they had a son named Stith Daniel also. This Stith later moved to Johnson county IN. I was just wondering if anyone has researched this group or has any insights ??

Re: waqua creek database?

Hi Jack,
??? Yeah, very inconvenient when even somewhat unusual given names are used in unrelated lines. At least all of the 15 Estridge/Eastridge Daniels I have found are all from my line. It will be a bad day when I find one who isn't!
?
? The Essex and Caroline families intermingled with the same families, especially the Sneads, and in a couple of cases appear in the same records together because of that but seemed to have nothing to do with each other aside from that. The Caroline Daniels were slightly involved with the Harrisons before the Essex Daniels moved to Caroline, but the Essex Daniels were very close to the Harrisons in Essex so both associated with the same Harrisons in Caroline.

? A story I have told before, but it shows how bad things were before Y DNA came along. My ancestor, Estridge Daniel 1782-1852 (2nd great grandson of William 1680-1765 of Caroline) owned land that bordered that of Henry Daniel 1786-1783 (great grandson of James Daniel non-biological son of William of Middlesex) for over 20 years and when Henry sold it, he sold it to Estridge. Only Y DNA proved they weren't related.

?? We are probably up to at least 20 to 30 unrelated Daniel lines before 1800 in Virginia alone! No idea how many unrelated Daniel lines were in North and South Carolina before Virginia Daniels started migrating south and west.

Kevin

Hello, Kevin,

There seem to be a lot of Daniel folks with first name Harrison back in those days. And several unrelated, but intermingled family lines to add confusion. (How many lines are there now? 20 to 30?)

After 1865 there was another Harrison Daniel living on the old plantation near Danielville Georgia. We have no idea at all as to his parents, except that he was a mulatto. Some suspect he was a son of one of the Daniel boys. He may have descendants living in that area, but I haven't found any willing to think genealogy.

Hi Jack,
??? Wasn't this Harrison Daniel from the line of James Daniel 1664-1742 of Essex County, VA? Possibly a son of James Daniel III who moved to Caroline County, VA in the late 1760s or early 1770s? Or has Y DNA testing changed this assignment? BTW, Bedford County, VA did not exist until 1754.

I will have to double check, but I think the Y DNA of? the Harrison Daniel who died in Laurens County, SC matches that of the line of James Daniel 1664-1742.? I have birth places of both Essex and Bedford Counties, VA for him but suspect that Essex is correct.

The Y DNA of the Harrison Daniel who died in Indiana does not match the line of James Daniel 1664-1742 or the Harrison Daniel who died in Laurens, SC.

?? There is no connection between James Daniel 1664-1742 of Essex and Roger Daniel. It does not appear that anyone can prove descent from Roger Daniell using primary records, which is the first step in determining the Y DNA of a line.... The Y DNA of the line of Roger Daniell is not proved.
