Caroline County, Virginia Daniel group
My interest is primarily in the line of William Daniel who was born about 1680 and died in December 1764 or early January 1765. He died testate and his will was presented for probate on 10 January 1765, but most records in Caroline were lost during the Civil War. A group of 20 Daniel men have taken Y DNA tests at Family Tree DNA and resulting primary record research has proved that they descend from William Daniel 1680-1765. A write up of this research and information about the first three or four generations is available at:
The male Daniel line of William Daniel 16801765 was represented in Caroline County from 1728 until around 1800 by which time the Daniel name from this line disappeared in Caroline as these Daniel men moved west and south. An unrelated Daniel group which descends from James Daniel of Essex County, VA moved to Caroline County in the 1760s or early 1770s and male Daniels from that line were in Caroline after 1800. Capt. William Daniel of Middlesex Co., VA
Thank you, Kevin, for your continuing work. I just wanted to remind everyone that my first cousin Alfred David Daniel is in the Daniel DNA group and my 3rd cousin Jerry H. Daniel. They match completely on Y DNA. We have a 66 of 67 marker match with others going back to Capt. William and we descend from his son Robert. l hope it helps others connect. We believe that the mutation on one marker happened right at our Josiah Daniel b 1805 NC, son of James Key and Sarah Brown Daniel. This is understandable in that "volatile" markers can mutate. Cecil Daniels has a paper trail back to Capt. William and descends from another son of James Key and Sarah Brown Daniel. He is also in the DNA project. We have yet to find a scrap of paper in Caswell Co., NC, with Josiah's name on it, but have not found any other Daniel family with an unidentified son the right age to be our Josiah. Census records say that he was b in NC and parents b VA (that fits). The names of some of his children: James, Sarah, and William Brown Daniel would suggest a father named James and Brown from the mother's maiden name. We only had one day for research at the archives in Raleigh so don't know if we missed anything that might have placed Josiah there prior to moving to AL. So, anyone searching in NC, please let us know if you find anything with Josiah's name on it. Meanwhile, we trust that this is our connection.?

KnowYourDNA web site
I got a request from a woman named Donna Moore who is the founder of a web site . She queried me about the possibility of adding a link to her site to the "DNA Information Links" page of our web site. I am researching this site now, but wondered if anyone has heard of or used this site?
It appears to be a non-profit, informational site, but not very technical. There have been various requests over the years from different sites to add links from our site, but most were for profit sites so were rejected. Thoughts on including a link to this site welcomed. Thanks, Kevin |
Re: Capt. William Daniel of Middlesex Co., VA
So many ,with the same names ,it can be confusing . I am also doing some research on a Josiah Daniel he was born around 1756 d. 1830 ish he had a son Josiah born around 1809 they were in Rowan/Davie counties . The reason I am researching this group is a couple of months before my father passed (he was 97) we did an autosomal dna for him and he has , so far 6 matches that can be traced back to this Josiah's family. Three from a child of the elder Josiah's first wife (name unknown) and three from his second wife Priscilla Trent through his son Josiah. Ancestry's thru Lines shows that many trees on Ancestry miss attribute this Josiah with the Woodson Daniel group. Now to get in contact with the male descendants of this Josiah and get a couple to do y-dna to confirm (hopefully) which Daniel family they really belong to.? ? ?On y-dna genetic distance , I have a confirmed 5th cousin that is a GD of 5 at 111 (think he was 2 at 67) and another match that is 4 at 111 (was three at 67) who has to be at least one if not two generations farther back( maybe more ) to get a common ancestor . So far we don't know who our MRCA is but I think DNA? testing is helping us close in on it .? ? ?Keep up the good work .

Re: KnowYourDNA web site
Hi Kevin,
From what I have seen on her site it is mostly informational concerning DNA testing. I don't see why Ms. Moore would be interested in the Daniel DNA site as most of the data is submitted by those searching for family connection and not to order DNA testing as the other sites she has listed.? Unless she is interested in how the site is formatted.? In that case, a template should be used with "ghost" names attached. Just my observation, Berlene Jacques? |
Britton Daniel born 1814 - still searching for proof of parents
Thanks for setting this up Kevin. Your earlier work got me going on trying to find Britton’s ancestors using DNA, since we couldn’t find a paper trail. We believe his parents were John Daniel and Catherine Napier, but no proof yet. Thanks to FamilyTreeDNA, we learned that Britton is probably connected somehow to John Thomas Daniel (d1640), Edward Daniel (1760-1833), Nathaniel Daniel (1796-1864), William Jeremiah Daniel (1780-1850), James Daniel (1745-1821), but no idea how they connect. Britton is first found in Harlan County, Ky then Clay County, KY and finally in Madison County, KY. His name is sometimes spelled differently (Brittain, Britten, etc.). Any suggestions or corrections are appreciated.?

Lineage of Woodson M Daniel
Hello,?
I am new to the Daniel Surname DNA Project and to this group. I am trying to trace my line. I can trace it back to one Woodson M Daniel with primary sources. He lived c. 1830 to after 1860 and was married to Susan Elizabeth Kidd and they were from Knoxville, TN. I am descended through their son Marcus Rosencrans Daniel. I am trying to trace their line further back. I have looked at several public trees on Ancestry.com and Familysearch.com. The line seems fairly clear back to a Captain James Daniel from VA who reportedly lived 1709-1761. But there seems to be confusion because there were multiple James Daniels from VA. I learned about the Daniel DNA Project through this page for one of the James Daniels.??Perhaps I will need to do a Y DNA test to confirm who I am descended from. But I dont know how that works. Is there a database of Daniel DNA profiles my test can be compared to? Has anyone already sorted out this line from Woodson M or Marcus R back to the correct James Daniel? Any help will be greatly appreciated!! |
Re: Lineage of Woodson M Daniel
Hi David,
? Welcome to the Daniel surname list at groups.io. This list is for all queries about the Daniel, and spelling variants families, not just DNA related queries. Hopefully, someone on the list will be familiar with your Daniels and give you some help. Taking a Y DNA test would not be helpful for you since Y DNA is passed only from father to son, so would only work if you were a male Daniel. If you can connect to any male Daniels, however, they could take a Y DNA test to prove you line. Autosomal DNA is only reliable for about 3-4 generations, due to the increasing number of ancestors in each generation we go back and the decreasing amount of autosomal DNA, if any, that we get from our distant ancestors. If a male Daniel from your line has taken a Y DNA test, they will be able to see the other Daniels who they have matches to. If you do find a male Daniel from your line who has tested, you can also view their results as part of the group of Daniel males who have tested on the Results page of the Daniel DNA web site at , if you know their kit #. We are happy to help if you have any questions. Best, Kevin |
Re: Lineage of Woodson M Daniel
?Hello David , I second what Kevin said, if you have or can find a male descendant in your line to do a y-dna test that would be helpful ,it will show you, possibly which family of Daniel's you are connected to. Concerning Ancestry family trees , when you get into that time period records are few and far between and some individuals like Capt. James Daniel have been researched fairly well and have more records associated with them, the problem arises when people make assumptions about relatedness and tack their family tree onto another without confirmation. It's something we all struggle with. I have my dad's autosomal dna on Ancestry DNA and I look at Ancestry's "Thru Lines" and several matches show a connection to Capt James Daniel or Elizabeth Woodson, but I'm fairly sure that's not the case, based on my own y-dna test.? ? ? Just be patient , as more people test you may find a connection, and as always double check everything and don't assume anything.? ? ? ?Wishing you great success in your search? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Joe Daniel |
