Amp replacement on Dahlquist PDQ1200 subwoofer
Does anyone have experience or recommendations on replacing the amplifier on a Dahlquist PDQ1200 subwoofer? Mine is at a shop in Nashville and they are asking $350 to replace the amp, which they say cannot be repaired. I am hesitant to pay for repairs as I only paid $125 for the sub to begin with. I actually have/had a pair of them connected to my home theater (for which I use DQM-9's as the mains). I would buy another PQD1200 used if I could find one. There is a PDQ1500 for sale on eBay, which I have considered, but not sure of the mismatch with it and my current PDQ1200. Does anyone have a recommendation for an amp for this model sub? Since it apparently cannot be re-built, it would have to be an aftermarket amp and not sure how that would affect the sound, which I like, even though these were not of the original Dahlquist line. Thanks!

Moving to new home and setting up a whole home audio system (in-ceiling speakers in 9 rooms plus extra 14AWG wiring to two rooms specifically for my two pairs of DQ-10's and subs. I will be wiring in a keypad in every room to control 3-4 electronic devices, a vintage Pioneer turntable (PL -707) being the lone standout that cannot be controlled (well, except for volume once its queued up and playing) That said, I got rid of 99% of my records over 20 years ago, so now it remains boxed up, waiting for the day I dust it off and feed it some vinyl. That day, I don't think, will ever come again, as I simply don't see myself ever returning to vinyl no matter how fashionable it becomes again, nor for its "warmer" sound. I just don't feel the urge to seek out and buy records, or a place to store them, or all the manual effort to even play them in light of streaming services and NAS device and other electronics I'll have at hand. Seems like too much work. Given this reality, is there ANY reason to hang on to this old man, or, does someone out here wish to offer it a good home? Pay shipping only.

Masonite Advent woofer: Broken solder between voice coil wire and connector wire
A few months ago I feared that one of the woofers on my main pair of DQ-10s (the pair that has the original woofers with the masonite ring) had broken beyond repair. In particular, I feared that the voice coil had burned out, since the tester measured infinite resistance between the two woofer connectors. After various tests, however, I managed to understand that the problem was in the soldering on the cone where the voice coil wire comes out (see photo). After re-soldering very carefully to avoid burning the cone, the woofer started working normally again. I hope this message can be useful to someone who has the same problem. Trying to repair the original woofer, in fact, is also important because, as I reported in another post of mine sent today, the full metal basket Advent woofer has the cone set back compared to that of the original woofer and it would therefore be necessary to mount it forward with respect to the panel. DQ-10 woofer dilema
8
I have this pair of DQ-10's I've been getting ready to restore/rebuild. One of the woofers has had the foam surround redone and they did what looks to me like a terrible job. The other one looks original as far as I can tell. Online I found what was described as a fully rebuilt pair of DQ-10 woofers so I bought them thinking it would save me time and trouble. Now that I'm getting ready to start working on these things the woofers aren't the same. The frame and magnet are the same - but it's a full 12" woofer. Even though they are a direct fit I'm guessing these are a no-go for the DQ-10? Here are some photos. Original on top, purchased on bottom: https://photos.app.goo.gl/X9nAsiXCae8kdsyP6 https://photos.app.goo.gl/797e6byDhXpVuBUk8 Thoughts? Do I try them or is this just a complete no-go? I'm guessing they will sound very different than the originals. I looked online and have not been able to find a pair that looks the same - even on old advents.

DQ-10 phase issue found and corrected
11
I bought a pair of DQ-10s at a local thrift shop about a year ago, and had been thoroughly enjoying them for at least a month when I discovered that one of them had a phase issue. Here's what happened... I was reading another audio forum and came upon the subject of using test records/CDs to evaluate stereo systems and or speakers. Out of curiosity, I found The Best of Chesky Classics & Jazz Audiophile Test Disc Volume 3 on Tidal and gave it a listen. To my surprise, Track 28 - Natural Stereo Imaging, and Track 29 - Artificial Stereo Imaging indicated there was a problem with my right speaker. The imaging would not extend past the right edge of the speaker. But with the left speaker, the imaging extended well past the left edge. In other words, the soundstage from my DQ-10s was being cut off drastically on the right side. After several hours of trying to figure out what the heck was going on, I discovered that the tweeter and super tweeter on the right speaker were wired out of phase. It was an easy fix, and now my DQ-10s sound the way they should... a soundstage that extends nearly 90 degrees to the left and to the right. Funny thing is, I was under the impression that my speakers were factory mirror imaged (SN 47247 and 47295), and the wiring appeared to be untouched. Anyway, I was clueless that there was a problem until I listened to that test CD. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with Chesky recordings...

Anyone using a DAC? Which ones? Diminishing returns on vintage speakers?
19
Want to play my digital music library through my reasonably costly system (Dq-10's, Dq1W sub and LP1 Xover) Hafler 500 amp and pondering the need for an outboard DAC to extract the best sound. Unsure of which one. Anyone out here using one and did you notice a real difference in sound quality vs just plugging into your computer or streaming via something like Plex? Given the age and cost of the DQ-10's, I'm also wondering if spending more than a few hundred bucks on the DAC is even worth it given the limitations of the speakers themselves. The $249 Cambridge Audio DACMagic 100 seems like a nice little unit without breaking the bank....Not interested in a big dollar unit that won't produce any better sound through the 10's than a $250 unit My music resides on a laptop so I suppose I'd need a pretty long cable to go from the living room or office to the DAC - is that how most use them?

Has anyone used one of these to measure speaker performance/range?

Looking at the Dayton Audio iMM-6C Calibrated USB-C Measurement Microphone for Apple/ Android. Seems like a handy little device to gather some data and maybe use as a reference to tweak things like speaker placement, identify bad drivers, etc. https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-iMM-6C-iDevice-USB-C-Calibrated-Microphone-390-813?quantity=1&utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=231217_Last%20Minute%20Gifts%20SALE%25E2%2580%25942&KID=01HEQGBBKDPQ6F9JAEN3K5DJY9&_kx=RDgLkTWRgaKa2BWJeF8ZUNncAwiBPRiz3VGrWyv_F5c%3D.V6FJTs Any thoughts? DQ-1W As Powered Subwoofers
5
I've had my DQ-10s, DQ-1Ws, and a DQ-LP1 since the '80s. My DQ-LP1 has a loose connection somewhere in the RCA jacks - I tried, without success, re-soldering the connectors to the PC board. Anyway, I've been using my DQ-10s on my Yamaha RX-V6A AVR and was hoping to connect my DQ-W1s as if they were powered subwoofers by driving them with my Hafler 500. When I connect the AVR to the amp and subwoofers, I am not getting clear, solid bass (sounds a little scratchy and the bass is very weak). I don't expect anyone to troubleshoot my problem over 开云体育, but I would like to know whether it's even possible to use my Hafler and DQ-1Ws in this way, or if there's some technical reason why it won't work. If it's possible and I'm not likely to do damage, I'll get back to figuring out why it's scratchy and weak. If it's not possible, I'll work harder to figure out where the loose connection is in the DQ-LP1. Thanks, Rick

DQ-20 capacitor list for recapping purposes?
7
I have several pairs of Dahlquists and just acquired a pair of DQ-20s. I’ve recapped many speakers and would like to know people’s experience with recapping the DQ-20s. What type and value of capacitors. I have used the caps from Regnar in the past but would like other suggestions. Thank you. Yori

I'm going to be on Long Island next week, and passing near the Dahlquist facility. Is there anything to experience, or is it just a parts counter in an industrial park? Any insight is appreciated... thanks!

Hi group. What do you think these are worth?
37
Hi group. I recently moved into a smaller house and no longer have the right amount of room for my pair of DQ-10 speakers. It pains me, but I will probably have to sell them, and I have no idea what the value is or what they might be worth to someone. I LOVE them. They are an original set (original crossovers and speakers), serial numbers 22046 and 22048. I replaced the foam surrounds for the woofer around 20 years ago, they definitely need to be redone and that's the only issue that I know of. I also have the stands. If I was going to put them up for sale, what do you think I should be asking for them? Thanks for your input.

DQM-9C Tweeters
DQM-9C Tweeters So I rescued a sadly abused pair of DQM-9C with dented/torn dust covers, no grill covers, and gouged cabinets. I had them in my workshop for a little while, but they just sounded awful, no top end from either tweeter (yea I checked the fuses). I pulled and desoldered them and both are dead measuring infinite resistance. So I did a little digging and these Magnet tweeters are different than my DQM-9’s MHTL-24G tweeter, as these are 8 ohm not 6.8 ohm. I think they may be a variant of the MHTL-26 series but it’s moot as there are no replacement tweeters out there, and no, Regnar lists none for any DQM Series. So, I have a few choices. adapt another 8 ohm/90 dB tweeter Use a cheap Chinese silk 1” diaphragm kit and try to repair them Find some working tweeters cheap Toss em and start over. Anyone have any experience with tweeter alternatives and/or tweeter repair kits? Or other ideas? These speakers are pretty rough and not worthy of living room habitation, but I love my 9s and want a pair out in the workshop. I currently have a pair of DQM-5s out there now, wonderful speakers, but they just don’t push enough air for that big of a space.

Restoring DQ-10, super muffled / distorted
5
Hi there, I inherited a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 and have been working on restoring them. I had the amplifier professionally serviced, but I am working on the speakers myself. Last night I refoamed the woofers. I was excited to reassemble everything and test it this morning, but it sounded horrible! I assumed maybe it was due to the old 80 uF capacitor, so I replaced those with a much nicer pair, but the sound didn't change at all. The high frequency content sounds normal, but when the bass drops it sounds like someone blowing raspberries. I'm going to replace all the capacitors in the crossover tonight, but I wanted to check here to see whether anyone had other suggestions first. The other capacitors are the yellow type that everyone said should still be good, so I'm confused why it still sounds like garbage. Do you think replacing all of the capacitors will fix the sound? I can't think of anything else that I changed; the distortion isn't limited to the woofer that I refoamed, but if there is an obvious mistake to check (like if I inverted the polarity by mistake) then please let me know. I checked the fuses and both are fine, although one was a 20A fuse so I think I need to replace it with a 2-3A fuse like it says.

DQ-10s (original) for sale
They have the little mid century legs. non-mirrored. I replaced one bass driver and the foam for both. All the other drivers work. All original, as far as I can tell. Sound great. $600/pr picked up sounds about right? (I haven't been tracking prices...) Hit me with questions. Pics to follow.

DQ-20i replacement tweeter?
11
Just picked up a pair of dq-20i's and of course one tweeter is bad. I can't find much info on the d2008 8517. Anyone have any experience with these? Also, is there a preferred supplier for foam for the woofers?

DQ10 Tweeter Fuse?
14
I am the original owner DQ 10s purchased through audio club while stationed in Europe in 1976-77. No serial numbers anywhere. All original; nothing replaced so far. Has the AGC 3 fuse but does not have the tweeter fuse where one would normally find it next to the tweeter in a fuse holder. Instead, it has what looks to be an inline fuse (see pic)? The speakers came factory mirrored with a paper on which was right and left but no right or left marking on the speakers. I can only guess maybe these were an earlier pair as factory mirroring started given lack of serial number or the usual tweeter fuse location. My plan is to have the crossovers tested; local vintage audio repair service believes it likely only the blue caps need replacing. Speakers seem fine; woofer has been re-foamed. My question would be whether to have a fuse/fuse holder mounted next to the tweeter or leave well enough alone.
