Welcome to the Dahlquist group!
This past Saturday I became the owner of a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers. In my quest to locate information on these speakers and sources for replacement parts for the bad midrange and tweeter in one, I discovered that there was no Dahlquist specific group on the internet. There are groups for Tannoys, Altecs, JBLs, Magnepans, Klipsch, Bozaks, Dynacos, and, yes, even for Bose. Yet, a group for Dahlquist speakers, often found in the top 10 lists of most significant speakers to come out of the '70s and considered downright legendary by many, was glaring in its absence. So, I created this group in the hopes that it might serve as a gathering place for Dahlquist enthusiasts and thusly as a central knowledge base regarding the legendary DQ-10 and its superior counterpart, the DQ-20. Ross (cubdog) is the moderator for this group and will assist in maintaining order. His prior post outlines the general expectations of conduct and desires of this group. To the members current and future, I kindly ask you all to hold to the generally accepted codes of decorum and conduct so that this may become a community for fans of Jon Dahlquist's designs. Any and all information any of you may have to provide would be greatly appreciated as well as more general stories of our journey through the audio hobby. Remember, this is a brand new group and how we initial members act and post will shape what this site will become as it hopefully grows. Please consider that and be quick to help, but slow to ire. If any of you know other Dahlquist owners/fans, please feel free to invite them to join our group. Also, please make use of the Files section located on the left-hand menu to upload any documents that may be found useful for other Dahlquist owners, new and old. The Photos section is there to share pictures of your speakers, systems, or whatever might be applicable to this group that you desire to share. Thank you for your participation. Let's make this group great! - JP

Glad to see a forum dedicate to my favorite speaker
OK for an intro all I know is the DQ10 and have been a long time member of both AudioAsylum and AudioKarma so if you have spent time there you have seen "Fatboy" I sent this off to Cubdog and then realized he may not have been the one after the dome mid info When I got my 10's about three years back I had the same prob with my domed mid. I substituted a Vifa 3" dome mid-off the top of my head I can't recall the mod. # but they only make one in shielded and unsheilded(two versions of the same driver). I put a 12 ohm resistor in parallel with it to attain th proper Ohmage.. i got the Vifa from PartsExpress so check their website. I can't remember his AK handle but the "twangophile" put the same Vifa driver in for his domed mid and the 5" mid with happy results If you haven't done so yet REBUILD the Xover with all new inductors, caps and a new L-pad(Regnar is the only source for the L- pad with a proper resistance) all the rest came from PE. I used Solen caps and foil inductors-All I can say is WOW unbelievably fast with a HUGE bass improvement. Glad to find a forum to my all time favorite speaker-$300 of TLC makes this beauty compete against the modern $5000 big boys I do have a whole tweak list for the 10 put will try to keep my posts short so that will wait for next time. I am no longer a computer junkie so I may not catch your posts or emails immediately SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. INFO I HAVE FOR THE DQ10 XOVER SCHEMATIC BIWIRE SCHEMATIC-pretty much the same but woofer and mid woof are seperated from the rest MIRROR IMAGE INFO MY STANDS and of course the TWEAK LIST a compilation from other DQ10 fans and my own experience Glad to be aboard John

DQ-10 Repair and Modification 9
As I mentioned in my introductory post, I'm the new owner of a pair of DQ-10s. However, the 2" midrange dome and 3/4" dome tweeter on mine are bad. For the midrange, the tinsel wire has been burnt up or broken inside its protective resin right where it enters the cloth dome. The voice coil is in good condition with no evidence of being overheated and the like loosening of wires, continuity there also checks fine. So, it must have been a mechanical breakage. In the past, I have repaired similar breaks in similar drivers (the 2" dome midranges of a pair of Infinity Quantum 2s), however the proximity of the break to the dome makes such a repair too difficult to undertake. And so, I am in need of a company that might be able to affect a repair of this driver or a source for good, but used equivalents. I am aware of Regnar, but so too am I that their prices are above and beyond my range. As to the tweeter, the aluminum tinsel leads have corroded from exposure resulting in one breaking just as it passes beneath the magnet cover. Unlike the midrange, this driver appears to be glued together rather than screwed and so I cannot take it apart for repairs. Nevermind that my success at resoldering aluminum VC wires even with the appropriate solder has been minuscule. So, I need one of these as well. Another issue I discovered while tracking down the above problems is that the woofers, while largely the original Advent woofers with the masonite ring, have been reconed in the very recent past. The foams and cones are spotless, but rather than the dark, almost purplish cone with annulae, I find that mine have light grey and very plain cones. The foam surrounds, however, were reglued appropriately. Anyone know how I might identify whether the woofers were reconed appropriately with the correct cone mass and VC replacements? There is a number printed on the back of the cone that I do not remember nor wrote down, but that I can retrieve if it might point to the answer. If need be, I do have a pair of Advent/1s on loan to some friends that I might retrieve and sacrifice for a woofer transplant. The drivers in these speakers I believe are the same as found in the New Large Advent and thus are the same that Simply Speakers sells as replacements for the DQ-10. While I have mine apart and am working on them, I do plan on eventually recapping the crossover as per the schematic in the files section. I'll likely also affect the mirror imaging project shortly after I can locate the needed replacement drivers. So, I might as well implement any modifications at the same time. Does anybody have experience with various modifications or suggestions for what I might do to improve these speakers? Since half my midranges and tweeters are shot, perhaps there are better options available that I should install rather than direct replacements? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. - JP

Power requirements 6
I'm currently driving my 10's with an Adcom GFA-555II and love the sound. What would be the benefit of adding a second Adcom to the mix? Do you think it would be worth the $400 to $500 investment? cubdog10

Upgrade kits from Regnar 3
Has anyone purchased the cap kit from Regnar? At $160.00 plus each I would hope they make a huge improvement in the sound. Also being mechanically challenged how hard is it to do this upgrade? If I had to pay someone to do this it would really kill the deal. If anyone has done this upgrade I would appreiciate your feedback. Thanks. cubdog10

Sub 4
Hey Guys: Glad to be aboard! Bought my DQ-10's in December...best Christmas present I ever got. Don't know their history (estate sale), but they are in good shape...surrounds are fine...they sound fresh and bright...I'm VERY happy with them...but would like to know some well-matched DQ-10/subwoofer pairings. Have seen the Dahlquist passive crossover and sub...and their better active crossover...are these the only solutions? Best, Chuck Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football 06 - Go with the leader. New Audio Forum: Sound Thinking
A couple of audio buddies and I have created a new audio forum aimed at creating a communal atmosphere for our shared hobby. It lacks the bulk and slowness to change of the larger forums and is based upon the standards of equality. So, please do drop by, check it out, and post a few things. Hopefully we all will be able to make something of it. http://soundt.18.forumer.com - JP

Just got my first DQ10s--Upgrade rest of system? 6
Hello all, So happy to see a Group dedicated to Dahlquist. I really respect the depth of knowledge on this board, and I've learned a lot! Proud to say I just picked up my first set of DQ10s, the fulfillment of a 20 year dream. I've had the DQM-5s for just as long--still a terrific 2-way speaker, IMO. Spent the better part of last weekend toying with combinations of receivers and CD Players I own to find the best combo, but I am wondering if I should consider getting some upgrades to enhance the awesome improvement in sound. Can anyone provide some advice/experience? Here's my setup: HK 3470 Receiver (100 WPC) NEC CD-530 CD Player (at least 10 years old?) M&K VX-7 MkII Subwoofer (turntable & tape deck--don't intend to replace) My observations/concerns: It appears that the HK receiver is providing some nice power, as I listen to moderate volume levels and have the volume turned up only about 1/4 of the way. The sub appears too small for the setup and rattles easily if I don't keep the power low. Do the more recent CDPs have a considerable advantage over the older ones, especially when it comes to the DAC's in later equipment? I'm open to going with a power amp/tuner/preamp setup if this really will help (never have done this). I've been thinking that some of the old Adcom equipment might be just the right fit. Please bear in mind that I paid just $200 for the DQ10s (unbelievable bargain) and would not want to spend significantly more on other components, so I'm also open to equipment that's used but still excellent and up-to-date (relatively speaking). Thanks in advance for any perspective and assistance!

amps for dahlquist
Hi guys. I just thought I'd send a note on how I came to tube amps for my system. I originally bought the DQ8's many years ago and paired them with a Carver amp. That sounded good to me but eventually I had to sell them as I moved. Then I ended up in Seattle and bought a pair of DQ20i's and bought another Carver amp with a volume control. (I think it was the TFM35.) I thought it sounded good but when I went looking for a CD player, all the dealers said my amp was the weak link. Of course, I argued that all amps were alike, but they explained to me why they weren't. Then I started demoing different amps and found that they weren't all alike. Dahlquist speakers are very well known to be hard to drive. I also was told that John Dahlquist voiced his speakers for tube amps. Whether this is true or not doesn't really matter, because I know first hand that they do sound much better with tubes. Or maybe a solid state amp paired with a tube preamp and maybe a tubed CDP. You do need LOTS of power if you own a solid state amp, but some of the upper-end amps could do the job with somewhat less power, because there are also other factors included. I tried an Ayre amp that sounded very good and it was only (approx.) 90 or so wpc. I have actually waited a long time to aquire my system because my music is one place that I didn't want to compromise. It's taking me actually 4-5 years to get what I have, but I do also have a smaller system for listening, so I'm not without my music. I still don't have a CD player but I decided I am going to go with computer audio music, and I'm very close to getting a USB dac. If you're trying to get the best you can from your system, look into EBay or Audiogon for a used tube amp or pre-amp. I liked McIntosh real well (tube amps, NOT their Solid State) and even some of their older pieces are still good. Cary also makes some good, reasonable priced amps, also some of the new Chinese gear is very cheap, just be careful about which company you go with. Dared, Consonance are a few good ones. I tried a Classe preamp once and it was great with my Legend monoblocks. I can't remember the model # but it goes for around $600 now on Audiogon. Hope everyone is enjoying the weather, have a great day. Sandra

Which tube amp Sandra 6
Sandra what are you using for power? My tube amp, an Onix SP3 is only 38wpc and not powerful enough for the 10's. Sounds ok but not as dynamic as the Adcom. cubdog

Great recordings 2
Hi Everybody, I have been following your posts because I am gearing up to modify my DQ-10's. Great sound must be addictive, one wants more and more to be satisfied. Since first aquiring my DQ-10's four years ago I have been noticing what an important job the recording engineers and producers have on the final sound. Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" was just playing. His voice sounds like he is in the room, the bass sounds real, the soundstage had depth and width. Dana Owen's (Queen Latifah) "California Dreaming" is another song that just played. When I close my eyes she too is in the room. Anyway, the reason I write, do you have recordings to recommend that allow your Dahlquist speakers to shine? Durski Forestville, CA

Layne Audio replacement speakers
I am planning on rewiring my DQ-10's and resealing the woofer compartment. I see Layne Audio is offering replacement speakers. Has anyone out there tried one of these? (http://www.speakersupply.com/prod03.htm) I don't want to get too far away from the original but I do want better sound if it is possible. Thanks!

DQ-10 stands
Hello Dahlquist friends! I have nothing to do with this eBay auction, but I wanted to let people know about it. Getting your DQ-10s off the floor definitely improves imaging and bass. DIY DQ-10 Stands 2
Greetings all, I've a bit of a request if its no bother. A friend of mine has been pestering me for information on how to build a pair of good stands for the DQ-10 and in my failure to find information via Google, I'd thought I'd pick your brains. Would any of you happen to have the necessary measurements or, better yet, plans to build such stands? They needn't be clones of the originals and optimized height would be preferable. Thanks much, - JP

Upgrade update 3
All, Thought I'd share this with you, since you've been so helpful in advising me on good equipment to consider to enhance the performance of my DQ10s. I've been doing some upgrading this summer!!! Here's what I got, and what I discovered: 1. Per all the recommendations here, I went out and got a powerful amp--Adcom GFA-555. Hooked it up to the HK 3470 Receiver I'd been using, so the receiver acted like a pre-amp/tuner. Impression: I agree with all of you that the DQ10s like juice :) Sound became more distinct and cleaner; imaging was clearer, and there just seemed to be an overall easiness/less strain to the music, even at the typically moderate volumes where I like to listen. 2. Got an Onkyo P-301 Preamp, a cousin to the highly rated (per AudioReview) P-304. I realize it's solid state, not a tube Pre, so I may not know yet what I'm missing. When I hooked it up & did an A/B comparison of a Pre/Amp combo vs. Receiver/AMP, I noticed only subtle differences, and these seemed to be clearer highs and little else. 3. Got a Yamaha T-950 Tuner to plug into my Pre. Not a huge listener to radio, but I definitely sensed an improvement in reception, quality and clarity of stations and music with the separate tuner, in relation to the receiver. Bought this based on reviews on AudioReview as well. 4. Upgraded my CDP to an Onix XCD-88 with modifications to the OpAmps. Without a doubt, this seems to me to be the best of all the improvements I made this summer!!! All of a sudden, the music coming out of my CDs seemed to take on an image all its own, and I could place voices and instruments on a soundstage like never before. The magic of having the "speakers disappear" was finally achieved :) For those of you wondering about your old CDPs, I can confirm that technology has evolved significantly, and the Chinese units like the Onix are incredible values. I must confess, however, that I haven't heard a $2000 CDP ;) Total for all the items: about $1200, including shipping, which I think is a darn good deal for how things are sounding now. My remaining upgrade goals: 1. Get some good/better quality interconnects and speaker wire. I've been reading good stuff about Acoustic Research wire, and the price certainly can't be beat, but I'd love suggestions if you have any. 2. Get some stands to elevate the speakers. Thanks to all of you who suggested this. 3. Convert my speakers to a mirror imaged pair. Will probably go with the kit Regnar supplies. 4. Upgrade my speakers using the capacitor kit Regnar supplies. If anyone has experience with this type of upgrade, please let me know! Some more observations: 1. Those of you who may have read my previous questions on how to upgrade made some suggestions about subwoofers. My M&K VX-7 (8") had a rattle, which I easily detected & fixed--loose cap on the speaker that was easily glued. I really like how this little sub seems to complement the DQ10s. I have no comparison to what a bigger sub might sound like, but this sub seems to "flesh out" the bass sound, and I do feel, at my listening volumes, that a sub is necessary with the DQ10s. Of note, I've set the crossover around 60 Hz, below the company's recommended 85 Hz, and it seems to fit nicely with what is put out by the Dahlquists. Any similar/different experiences? 2. CDs, and a good CDP, are the way to go over vinyl. Granted, I have a 20 year old Technics Linear Tracking turntable, but I ran a comparison of vinyl vs. CD using the same album, through my new Pre/Amp setup, and the dynamics and quality in the CD version were simply not there in the vinyl. Maybe this would be different with a better turntable, or maybe I needed to increase the volume when I played the record, but I'm skeptical. 3. Be patient on Ebay. Got most of my stuff on Ebay, and by holding back and not jumping into bidding wars, I was able to get my stuff for a lot less than it's been typically going for. 4. AudioReview can be a great resource, provided enough people have posted reviews on a piece of equipment, and you can mentally filter out people who post reviews with significant

Re-foaming/dust caps 5
I am currently re-foaming my woofers and was wondering if the replacement dust caps should be vented or sealed. I believe the originals were sealed. Would venting the voice coils from the front (via the dust cap) change the response of the woofer for the better? Anyone with experience or knowledge please chime in!! Thanks, D

DQ-10 Crossover Recapping 4
Just in case this might help someone, I've posted a brief tutorial over at Sound Thinking to recapping the DQ-10 crossover. I did include a brief mention of what the capacitor codes equate to in microfarads and included a couple of pictures. DQ-10s: Removing the piezo 4
Hello Dahlquist folks, I'd like to remove my piezo supertweeters, but I'd like to do it the correct way. Can anyone point me to a crossover schematic that reflects this modification? If I pull the piezo and don't change the crossover, frequencies above 12.5 khz will be filtered out. Thanks in advance for any help! Mark
