I think he enlisted in the Coastal Artillery in 1917 not 1971 hahaha!!? I also remember reading there was some delays reaching the war due to flu. Not him personally....

Gerry C asked: May I piggyback on this with a broader question....how long was Bill in the Army, what unit and what rank did he hold when he detached again? Thank you.

?

Bill was called to service late 1971 (PIO , p. 407) and released during spring of 1919 (PIO p. 61), so approximately a year and a half.

?

He was a second Lieutenant (PIO ?p. 54) at first, and I have found no evidence that a promotion followed.?

Re: Bill Wilson Army career

it's quite possible here in the uk to obtain the complete ww1 service records of any soldier, plus his unit commander's records, assuming these documents survived the london blitz some years later in ww2.? (i found my great grandad's papers and they are all scorched around the edges.)? presumably one can do the same in the usa?

Archives speakers on Zoom Service Workshop this Monday

On Monday, April 27, Gail L. and Michelle Mirza will be speaking about?archives on the?Monday Night Zoom Service Workshop Series. Gail is a member of the NAAAW Board and the past Akron Intergroup Archivist and will talk about our history; Michelle is the non-alcoholic Archivist for the General Service Office.

The meeting is scheduled for?Monday April 27, 2020 at?8:00PM Eastern Time. Login at then click on "Join a Meeting" and enter?meeting ID?320-861-4908, password 925644. Attendance is limited so it pays to get there a little early.

Get to know the Board - Mike Y.

We asked our Board members to share their memories of how they got involved in A.A. archives work - Mike was the first to take on the challenge:

It seems funny to me today that I would have an interest in archives. In elementary and high school I excelled in all the history subjects and did some additional exploring of events and items that peaked my interest, but upon entering Alcoholics Anonymous I didn’t see where there was much value to AA history and where t would help to carry the message.

When I first started showing interest was after an individual approached my home district with an idea of starting an archive and collecting AA history items. At the time I was a paper collector and figured rather than just pitching what I had to donate it to the archives. Some of the items where many years of district minutes, events and memorabilia. The individual responsible for the start up put together a couple of binders and put the rest of the materials collected in cardboard boxes without any sorting or preservation. Then stepped down due to returning to school in a different city and the items were stored in a past trusted servant’s basement for a couple years.

At a district meeting an item was brought up that had been previously discussed and wanted more information before rendering a decision. I consulted the area archives committee chair/archivist and he suggested looking for the information in the district archives. The frustration of searching through box after box to find the information needed, I believe was my Higher Power’s nudge to becoming an archivist and after serving as a panel 54 delegate began the journey to become an archivist.

In 2008 I attended my first National AA Archives Workshop and was like a child in a candy store and in awe of the presentations, history display items and the newfound friendships. From a happenstance collector and keeper of our history the National AA Archives Workshop and those that trudge the path of “Preserving our Past to Insure our Future” have led me to an understanding of the importance of keeping our history so that the message of Alcoholics Anonymous does not lose the message of hope.

BILL WILSON’S TENACITY

A person wearing a suit and tie

Description automatically generatedThe good April news for Bill Wilson was that the Big Book was finally published on the 10th of that month (1939); surely big money would be coming his way! The bad news on April 26th, (That’s today!) he and Lois were forced to vacate their beautiful home at 182 Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights—Lois’ family had lived there for fifty years. Lois claimed they moved from place to place fifty-four times the following two years.?

?????During this period, Bill helped raise $500 ($7,247 today) to mail out 20,000 post cards to physicians announcing an upcoming Gabriel Heatter radio program? where Morgan Ryan (former advertising man, asylum patient, and friend of Gabriel Heatter)? was to present a pitch for the new Big Book—they received only 12 replies.?

????But Bill, always the optimist—at least between his depressions—continued full speed?? ahead. Aren’t we lucky that Bill Wilson was what he was!? Some AAs point out that Bill had character defects. WHO CARES!?

Drafts of "Bill's Story"

开云体育

I have attached copies of the first and second drafts of “Bill’s Story.”? Both were typed by Ruth Hock, Bill’s secretary, during spring of 1938. You will notice many differences between these two writings—neither of these drafts were included verbatim in the “Manuscript” (attached).? The Manuscript was finished by Bill Wilson in December of that year, but it was edited (changed) again during the early months of 1939. The Big Book was printed the following April.? “So, “Bill’s Story” experienced almost a year of thoughtful changes—no wonderful it is so powerful!?

?

These drafts tell us significant changes as “Bill’s Story” progressed. The Big Book Study Group of South New Jersey has produced a wonderful online illustration of the second draft with many interesting archival photos. Please download:

I had read somewhere that it wasnt until 1959, the 4th or 5th printing of the 2nd edition that it was changed to these steps. I think its awesome so many people have so many early editions. ?

Hi,
I checked my first printing of the 12 & 12 ( April 1953 with the code D-C) and the wording in step 12 is "these steps" and yet the first printing of the second edition of the Big Book has, in How it Works, step 12, the wording is "those steps" and that was published two years later in 1955.

Oh well, just another "huh ?' in our history.

I don't believe the 12&12 was affected.

I think thats pretty neat Irene! ?Does the 12 step say these steps or those steps??
On the blank page, just prior to the title page is the following:?

and unabridged in contents.? While the type

The earliest 1st. edition printing I have is the 8th.? Appendix II is included in
the 8th printing which was published in February, 1945.?

Locked AA history lovers development updates and announcements sticky thread.

This is going to be a sticky thread where I make announcements to configuration changes and other things that I'm doing as I work towards ramping up this group to make it as dialed-in as possible.

For example, one of the changes that has been made is that you will now receive a daily digest instead of single messages (by default). You will no longer receive by default an email every single time somebody posts or replies to something, unless you decide to follow that message. You can override any of these settings and change it back if you like, so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm just trying to make it so that we don't get so much incoming email in our personal accounts as this forum grows. But if you like it the old way, simply go into your settings and change it back. And if you want even less emails than a daily digest you even have that option two, go look. This platform is really awesome. :)

I also recommend to create a dedicated Gmail (or whatever service you like) that you then use just for this AAHL account so that you can see all of your own history at your own personal email account , as well. I just think that would be neat. It is not at all required of course but if you like the idea, by all means do it.

You can always update your email address in settings at any time.

As I make other additions and changes moving forward, I will be posting updates here in this announcement thread as to what they are.

You can always send me comments and feedback as a direct mesage or email if you have any concerns or ideas and if we feel we need a group conscience on something I'll just create a chatroom for it or something or even a poll, no big deal.

But to keep this particular thread dense with information I'm going to keep it locked for now.?

Thank you.?

Re: FW: [AAHistoryLovers2] The Spiritual Experience

Was it In The 2nd printing of the first edition the 12th step was changed to read THESE steps instead of THOSE steps. I know it went back and forth in the 2nd printing. ?

Also Herbert Spencer qoute was originally the first line of Ray Campbells Storey “An Artists Concept”. In the 2nd printing Bill dropped Rays storey but stole quote and moved it to the Spiritual Experience.?

A side note: there are two known errors in the Big Book. One is June 10th and the other is Herbert Spencer did write that quote.?

if Im wrong about this would you most great and knowledgable intellects please tell us facts.?

During the late summer of 1934 Ebby Thacher was drunkenly shooting at pigeons perched on his roof ?in a very exclusive neighborhood in Manchester, VT.? ?For this he developed a court date and was facing a period of confinement. However, an Oxford Group friend, Cebra Graves, whose father was the County Magistrate, ?got him off the hook. In fear. In the interim, Ebby had prayed to God, as never before, for relief from his compulsive drinking.? He was miraculously struck sober for a period of two years and seven months. He eventually became a resident of Calvary Mission in lower Manhattan. On a bleak November day of 1934, he carried he carried the Oxford Group message to Bill Wilson. (Big Book pp. 8 & 9).? Of course, this was an important precursor our fellowship. Clarence Snyder said: “Bill Wilson made the touchdown, but Ebby handed him the ball.”
