Get to know the Board - Mike Y.

We asked our Board members to share their memories of how they got involved in A.A. archives work - Mike was the first to take on the challenge:

It seems funny to me today that I would have an interest in archives. In elementary and high school I excelled in all the history subjects and did some additional exploring of events and items that peaked my interest, but upon entering Alcoholics Anonymous I didn¡¯t see where there was much value to AA history and where t would help to carry the message.

When I first started showing interest was after an individual approached my home district with an idea of starting an archive and collecting AA history items. At the time I was a paper collector and figured rather than just pitching what I had to donate it to the archives. Some of the items where many years of district minutes, events and memorabilia. The individual responsible for the start up put together a couple of binders and put the rest of the materials collected in cardboard boxes without any sorting or preservation. Then stepped down due to returning to school in a different city and the items were stored in a past trusted servant¡¯s basement for a couple years.

At a district meeting an item was brought up that had been previously discussed and wanted more information before rendering a decision. I consulted the area archives committee chair/archivist and he suggested looking for the information in the district archives. The frustration of searching through box after box to find the information needed, I believe was my Higher Power¡¯s nudge to becoming an archivist and after serving as a panel 54 delegate began the journey to become an archivist.

In 2008 I attended my first National AA Archives Workshop and was like a child in a candy store and in awe of the presentations, history display items and the newfound friendships. From a happenstance collector and keeper of our history the National AA Archives Workshop and those that trudge the path of ¡°Preserving our Past to Insure our Future¡± have led me to an understanding of the importance of keeping our history so that the message of Alcoholics Anonymous does not lose the message of hope.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to our friends in the archives community affected by the covid-19 pandemic and especially to those in hard-hit Detroit. We had been looking forward to seeing you all there at the International Convention but for now, stay safe and take care of each other.
