Sticky Hey all! We are speaking! (Speaker flyer thread for AAHL members) 13 #zoom
I'm dedicating this thread for any member of this group who is speaking at an AA meeting, especially on Zoom (or similar) to be able to share their flyer or information so that hopefully other AAHL members (or myself), can come and support you. It can be a history talk or any other kind of talk in this case. The idea is for us to be able to hear each other's stories and shares and to get to know each other better. Also, if you know of any really cool events coming up (online or not) that are AA history related then also please post them in this thread Thank you! This thread will remain sticky, as well. - Thom R. Your AAHL Moderator

Locked Sticky AA history lovers development updates and announcements sticky thread. 4
This is going to be a sticky thread where I make announcements to configuration changes and other things that I'm doing as I work towards ramping up this group to make it as dialed-in as possible. For example, one of the changes that has been made is that you will now receive a daily digest instead of single messages (by default). You will no longer receive by default an email every single time somebody posts or replies to something, unless you decide to follow that message. You can override any of these settings and change it back if you like, so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm just trying to make it so that we don't get so much incoming email in our personal accounts as this forum grows. But if you like it the old way, simply go into your settings and change it back. And if you want even less emails than a daily digest you even have that option two, go look. This platform is really awesome. :) I also recommend to create a dedicated Gmail (or whatever service you like) that you then use just for this AAHL account so that you can see all of your own history at your own personal email account , as well. I just think that would be neat. It is not at all required of course but if you like the idea, by all means do it. You can always update your email address in settings at any time. As I make other additions and changes moving forward, I will be posting updates here in this announcement thread as to what they are. You can always send me comments and feedback as a direct mesage or email if you have any concerns or ideas and if we feel we need a group conscience on something I'll just create a chatroom for it or something or even a poll, no big deal. But to keep this particular thread dense with information I'm going to keep it locked for now. Thank you. Thom Your Moderator

The Empty Jug, July 1946 4
I am searching for anyone that has a copy of the July 1946 issue of an AA newspaper that was published out of Chattanooga, Tennessee with the name of The Empty Jug. The editor of the newspaper was Carl Knoedler, who unfortunately passed away a few weeks after this issue of the newspaper was published. Apparently the editor desired to seek controversy and this issue fulfilled that objective with a variety of possible outside issues. If you do have a copy, I will gladly pay any expenses related to providing me a copy. There were supposed to be around 600 subscribers to the newspaper at the time in 44 States, Canada, and Mexico. Thank you in advance. Gary Neidhardt Lilburn, GA 770-364-4044

Clarence quote
A quote attributed to Clarence Snyder: "Never say 'No' to A.A." Where is it? It's not apocryphal. I saw it once but didn't make a note of the source.

Unspiritual short version of our Traditions 2
Hello all, I seem to remember a letter Bill wrote where he describes when he and Earl came up with the short version of the traditions during a weekend at stepping stones. I may have heard this during a history presentation or, I saw it on here. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks, Will

On p. 322 of Pass It On, Bill W. is quoted as saying, "My personal life may not be exemplary, but I have never made a mistake about A.A." 20 Questions
I'm seeking information about the origins/practices of the following self-assessment. https://sfvaa.org/20-questions/ These questions were developed by Dr. Robert V. Seliger (Johns Hopkins Hospital). How did they get into A.A.? How have they been used? Is it commonly used today? It is of interest to me that the 20 Questions are on the San Fernando Valley Central Office website because this is where Narcotics Anonymous originated. And NA's first booklet (1954) includes an adaptation of these questions. Thanks, Chris

AA question 4
Sorry to bother you. A friendly dispute has arisen in our AA group. Allan says that the famous "Man on the Bed" painting depicts Dr. Bob and Bill visiting Bill Dotson, AA #3. Linda says that is incorrect. She says that in 1955 an illustrator for the Grapevine, Robert M, decided to paint a typical, generic 12th Step visit. He titled it "Came to Believe" So AA myth grew when someone said: "Hey that looks like a painting of Bill W. & Dr. Bob 12th Stepping Bill Dotson". So, the myth spread like wildfire and they renamed the painting "man on the bed". So our question is... did the artist intend to paint a picture of Bill, Bob and Bill Dotson? Or was he just painting an ordinary 12th step call which later became associated with Bill, Bob, Bill Dotson?

'Alano" Origin 4
Does anyone know the origin of the word "alano"? Bill used the word in 1947 in an AA GrapeVine article. I assume it was common before 1947. It could be a shorthand for Alcoholics Anonymous in some way. Hopefully, someone knows the beginning of the use of the term.

The AA Promises 4
Hello, I'm new to this group, so I'm not entirely sure how this all works, but I just had a question that I've been doing all kinds of research on and have gotten nowhere on and I'm hoping someone here might have the answer. I apologize if this answer is actually already listed somewhere throughout all of the messages on this forum, but I'm not to sure how to use this all yet and/or how to do a search through all of the postings. My question is, why is it that the 9th step promises are the dedicated promises read at many meetings? There are several other sets of promises for several other steps in the book Alcoholics Anonymous, so I'm just curious why the 9th step promises were chosen to represent "The AA Promises" in meetings. I have a couple of theories, such as perhaps it's because they are closely aligned with being the exact opposite of the bedevilments listed on page 52, or maybe it's because once we finish the 9th step, we move onto our daily action steps (10 is daily inventory, 11 is daily prayer and meditation and 12 is daily work with other alcoholics) but I can't seem to find an actual legit answer to this question anywhere. Thank you in advance for any information you are able to provide me!

Bill Wilson and Karen Hornet New York early 1940’s 4
Some years ago I had a reference that Bill Wilson was linked with noted psychoanalyst Karen Horney. Karen had moved from Chicago to New York in 1934. As I recall it , Karen was his analyst for a while. It may have been in the old AA HistoryLovers group. Any clues about that in the community? Best Regards, Barry M. Chicago, IL

Rowland Hazard/Carl Jung conversation 5
Greetings, On page 27 in the Big Book, Bill quotes a dialogue that took place between "A certain American business man"" (who we know to be Rowland Hazard) and "a celebrated physician" (Dr. Carl Jung). To me, the use of quotation marks indicates a repeating of a conversation, verbatim, for the purpose of not misquoting the participants. Is there historic reference to this conversation that would present the need for quotations? Did Bill and Rowland sit down and discuss the matter, in which Rowland repeated this conversation? I am not sure how close, if at all, Bill and Rowland were, or became. The large paragraph in the middle of the page is very specific, and includes pointed language on the vital spiritual experience that needs to take place. Inquiring minds want to know. Brian

Big Book 5
Why did Bill Wilson demote the doctor's opinion to its present location in big book when it had been chapter 1? I've been sober for 42 years and the more I read the doctor's opinion the more I think it's original positioning as chapter 1 was more helpful to a newcomer.
