Re: New poll for 4x6bandsaw

Dave Mucha

The poll only allows one choice.

I use 6tpi on aluminum almost exclusivly as I routinly cut 4 to 6in
parts.

I use a vari tooth for the small stuff like 1/4 inch steel.

maybe a Primary blade, a secondary and do you switch blades for
different project ?

just my 2 cents.

Dave
HF 4x6,
6tpi primary, vari-tooth secondary
Lennox prefreered over Starret.
bi-metal exclusivly.

Is this a new type of 4 x 6 bandsaw? - Anyone else seen this?

darkstarfire

I have just purchased a new 4 x 6 saw, and looking at the pictures of
Jet, Enco, HF, saws etc it does not look like any of them! Look at
the motor mounting. I have included a link to the website where I
bought it from. The one that I had delivered was white with a blue
pulley cover on the END. The colours matched my 9 x 20 lathe which I
bought from the same source! These are definitely Chinese /
Taiwanese saws. Anyone else know more about them? Any tips for
modifying them?

Jason

Uh... That should be largest diameter of DRIVING pulley is next to

Re: Belt and Pulleys

Here you go, T.J.,

Driving pulley (motor);
(measured on O.D. of step)
1.884 inches
2.223 inches
2.597 inches

Driven pulley (worm shaft);
(measured on O.D. of step)
2.164 inches
2.912 inches
3.701 inches

Above measurements should be very close, I measured them with a dial
caliper.

(note: the largest diameter of the driven pulley is next to the motor.

Belt;

O.D. 23.5 inches
I.D. 21.25 inches

Above measurements approximate, measured from a piece of rope, that
transferred the length from the belt.

Belt identification;

Gates (brand) Powerated 6823
First Rope (brand) A-22

Hope this helps! (down under) 8-)

Belt and Pulleys

I recently purchased a used 4x6 bandsaw. Its missing a few parts,
including the V-belt and both pulleys.

I was hoping someone might be willing to measure the diameter of each
of the 3 steps on each of the pulleys on their saw. The size of the V-
belt would also be handy.

I would assume there's some type of keyway holding the gear to the
shaft, if not a setscrew? Either way, see if you can get hold of an
automotive gearpuller (rent or, of course, HF has 'em)

Subject: Gear Help

Today I picked up a 4x6 with a bad gear. I'm guessing the owner
overtightened the blade. The worm gear "ate" a hole into the gear on
the blade pulley drive shaft. The former owner also gave me the part
he ordered. But, it is the wrong gear.

The saw is "RED" with "TYPE: BS-450C" as the only label markings. I
think it is from Northern Tool. Northern Tool is on the parts slip
for the new gear (the wrong size). Also, the part number of
the "WRONG GEAR" is TI15574091 TRANSMISSION GEAR - 155. This gear is
1 1/2" dia. and has 16 teeth. The gasket that came with the new gear
is 2 1/2 X 3 3/4.

The gear I need is 2" in dia. and has 23 teeth. Also, the gasket/gear
cover on this saw is 3 3/4" x 5".

Here are my questions:
1. Who's saw is it? Northern Tool?
2. Where can I get the correct replacement gear the fastest?
3. I have removed the nut retaining the gear on the shaft. How do I
get the gear off the shaft it does not seem to want to move?

Thank you,

Re: Gear Help

There are (at least) two versions of the "ubiquitous" 4x6 saw. (wow, i
finally got to use this big word, and what's more, i even spelled it
correctly) 8-)

Besides a heavier upper frame, the most obvious difference is the blade
guides. The heavier frame has cast blade guides, that mount "inboard",
while the lighter frame has "outboard" mounted pressed steel guides.

I don't know if there is a difference in the gear sets, but there might
be.

1. I don't know :)

2. Grizzly or Harbor Freight usually have those kinds of gears
available, but you'll have to pay for it and I have no idea how much
it will cost. the Harbor Freight manual is in the files section and
you should be able to find the part number there. Grizzly should be
able to fax you a page of the manual if you call them and ask
nicely.

3. A bigger hammer? No, I don't know on that one either. sorry.

Let us know what you end up doing in case someone else has to follow
in your footsteps. Thanks!

Jim,

Don't forget to check the worm gear housing for sand. It's been
reported that some have sand and other crud mixed with the gear
lube.

I checked mine and did not find this condition, but it's worth the
time
to check. You have to lean the saw so that when you take the cover
off
of the gearbox, the lube does not all run out.

Have fun sawing!

You hit the nail on the head! Got home today and took a look and that
is exactly what it is. Don"t you just love the chinglish instructions
that come with these imports?

BTW: funny thing... My manual has a warning (in the best pigeon
english) that the saw is NOT to be used in the vertical mode.
However,
it came with the surface plate and the bracket. Go figure! 8-)

Leo after I posted I thought about describing the part. My manual
calls it a bracelet. It's 1" wide 5 5/8" long a 90 deg bend 1" long
with a threaded screw. The long side is slotted 3/8" x 3 1/4".
Thanks for the reply Jim

Hmmm.... part #59?

In one manual, PN 59 is the rear blade cover. In another, it is a

If no one else has a clue, perhaps you can give a description of the
part.

Today I bit the bullet and purchased a 4x6HF saw. Started putting it
togeather tonite. Not much trouble so far had to align the pulleys
with a straight edge and move them both out to clear the gaurd. One
problem I need help on is I have a loose part that looks like part#59
in the parts diagram and I don't have a clue where it goes. Any help
would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance Jim

Bandsaw Blade Choice

rmeiser2000

I purchased a couple lennox diemaster II blades the last time I was
at the tool shop. Today I broke the last of my old blades and mounted
one. I was sawing 2 1/4 square hot roll solid for a tool holder I'm
making. I took two cuts, one to square the piece and a second to cut
to length. Each cut was finished in just 5 minutes with chips visibly
flying all the time. No cooling. The resulting squareness was
within .010. I'm impressed. Thought I'd pass this on to those who may
be wondering if a $15.00 blade is worth it. My vote is yes.

4x6 bandsaw performance problems--Likely solved

Jim E.

This was posted on the 7x10 site:

joeford45 wrote:

Folks;

In mid-July, I posted the original OT message about bandsaw
performance problems, and got several thoughtful replies which taken
together would be a nice FAQ on bandsaw checkups. I tried all of them
and actually got the saw to cut much better, probably because of a
loose belt.

Here's what else I found after looking more carefully inside the bow
(the oval housing the blade?).

One of the 2 hex screws (farthest from the motor) that holds the
folding plastic protective shroud around the belt and pulleys
penetrates the bow far enough to interfere with the blade.

Probably my fault for not finding this out earlier, but a little
grinding or a shorter hex screw will solve the problem.

Many thanks for the replies.

Folks;

My 4x6 HF bandsaw has developed some performance problems with
only
about 3 or 4 hours use.

It stutters or jerks, with the blade appearing to slow or pause
for
a
very brief moment, then picks up, then stutters again. The cuts
it
produces are uneven, particularly in the horizontal mode.

It will stutter in both vertical and horizontal modes, even when
not
cutting.

I can't see any obvious problems. Drive worm and worm gear appear
aligned and are fully lubed. Blade is running on the wheels in
what
appears proper alignment. I did have to reef down on the tension
settings to keep the blade on the wheels. Have I overtightened?

Has anyone else noticed this problem? Is it electrical?
Mechanical?

TIA for any ideas.

Joe F
