Re: Zeiss accessory shoes.
Bill,
I was going to question your comment about 35mm manufacturers fitting accessory shoes by reminding you of the early Feds.? However, I double checked and it seems that although the Fed had the space for the shoe they didn't make use of it till around 1935. I don't know when they started making other lenses or accessories.? So I shouldn't question the experts! My Super Nettel from year Y (1935) has the shoe cast as part of the top moulding with a spring on one side. Michael |
Re: Zeiss accessory shoes.
Wes, Zeiss Ikon changed their finder shoe to the cst model with the side spring with the introduction of the 5th version of the Contax 1 in the summer of 1934 after making 13,000 cameras. ?The 23,700?remaining? Contax 1's had the new shoe. ?At that time only they and Leitz made 35 mm cameras with accessory shoes. To the best of my knowledge, neither Carl Zeiss nor Zeiss Ikon were making accessories for other makers. Of course, like today, one could buy any (either) brand accessory they wanted. That said, the accessory finders, etc could have been changed to the simpler version at the time of the shoe ?change or they?may have retained the split foot for backward compatibility. ?The latter choice seems more probable as later accessories still have the split. As far as the Super Ikonta B (Super Ikomat B) goes, that was introduced in 1935 after the change in accessory shoes, so it never needed a split in the foot or the spring, so why add the cost of splitting it and putting the spring in. Zeiss accessory shoes.
Now for my next question:
Early Zeiss Ikon accessory shoes were simple 15mm squares. Their "feet" are simple metal squares with no springs or grips. Sometime in the 1930s, Zeiss Ikon changed their shoes to the style familiar to any Contax II, III, IIa, IIIa, etc. owner. The shoe still has no bottom spring, but does have a spring located on its right side that presses against the side of a foot. The feet are thicker and have their own spring set into the middle. When did the change to the more sophisticated version occur?? Did this affect all Zeiss accessories, or just Zeiss Ikon's? I own a 436/2 periscope finder that sports a foot that is in the Leica style with right-hand side "split." This is a Carl Zeiss Jena product. Was the fancier version of the foot confined to Zeiss Ikon products? Or was 436/2 marketed to any and all 35mm cameras? I also own a 436/8 brilliant finder for a Super Ikonta B. It also as a simple foot with no springs or splits. What would that date to? Finish is plain black paint. No crinkle finish. Again, thanks for any replies to these queries. WES LODER |
Re: pre-war contameter dates
Thank you for the pictures and the information. Also a thanks to William Jones for your dates and the sequence. I like your pictures of the early Zeiss microflex. I also own one of those accessories and would love to date it at some time.
I own a 1341 Contameter in the type 2 configuration and a 1339 in the type 3 configuration¡ªwhich might make sense since the Tenax II did not become available until 1938. I wonder if any 1339s were ever made in the type two model? I do note that the type 3 you show in your picture does not have a clasp for closeup. My 1339 does. Thank both of you again for your quick replies. WES LODER |
Re: pre-war contameter dates
Wes, Per Hans-Jurgen Kuc in "Auf den Spuren der Contax" the nested lens case version is the first, followed by the vertical lens case and finally the three lenses side by side in the front of the case. ?The post war case followed the layput of the third version. Sorry I cannot date them, but the second version was pictured in the 1938 General catalog. Bill On Wednesday, January 13, 2016 2:50 PM, "wesloder133@... [ZICG]" wrote:

Before WWII, Zeiss Ikon made a whole series of Contameters (1338-1343). Each Contameter in its series appears to have gone through three different models. In one series, the closeup lenses are nested to the left of the case, one on top of the other with a ribbon to lift them out. In another series, the three closeup lenses lie side-by-side toward the front of a shallow case with a clasp to secure the lid. In the third series, the three lenses sit vertically to the left of a deeper case without a clasp. My question is: Which came first? Which came second and third? And what would be the approximate dates for each model? Trying to make sense of the variations. Thanks, WES LODER

If memory serves, there is a normally threaded collar around the shutter release button. You have to remove that with a collet drive or spanner and then remove the counter and advance. Everything else is intuitive. On reassembly, the trickiest task is to re-engage the return spring on the shutter advance. I have serviced all my 3 lenses, and the parts of the camera's aperture gear train that can be reached from the front but it reverted.?In order to further clean the shutter gears and various gear trains I need to get the top off but have no info or clues as to how to undo the wind-on stack. Contarex Version One- how to get the top off, help wanted
Hi All I have a Contarex version 1 - Bullseye, Cyclops depending on where you hail from that has a fault that causes it to hang in cold weather at all shutter speeds. I have serviced all my 3 lenses, and the parts of the camera's aperture gear train that can be reached from the front but it reverted.? In order to further clean the shutter gears and various gear trains I need to get the top off but have no info or clues as to how to undo the wind-on stack. I believe there is a left hand thread at some stage and that I may have to make a tool for one of the rings but so far cannot find the info I need. I have ordered Tomosy's book, that apparently refers to this, but it has not arrived for a second time from Amazon and no tracking info available. Any help or clues much appreciated. Happy new year Kevin |
