YRC Open for Rowing 2
Dear all, With temperatures this week rising to the 60s and 70s, and the dip in the river's flow rate over the weekend to 15 kcfs*, we feel confident that conditions are safe for most rowers. Bob will move up the reservation start date to tomorrow, April 29. Happy rowing, everyone! As always¡ªand in particular if you are new to rowing on the Connecticut River during the spring melt¡ªplease monitor the flow rate daily. Club policy is that club boats cannot be taken out if the river is running faster than 20 kcfs. Club members with their own boats are, of course, free to row at their own risk! This link to the hydrograph on the Connecticut River at Montague is also on the YRC website. Best, Anita Fabos and Jaime Caron, co-presidents *kcfs = thousand cubic feet per second Anita F¨¢bos +1-413-230-6223 anita.fabos@...

Minutes of YRC annual meeting, 4/17/24
Minutes of YRC annual meeting, 4/17/24 12 members attending via Zoom: Anita F¨¢bos, Jaime Caron, Carol MacColl, Bob Sproull Ernie Alleva, Craig Schiff Moi Wurgaft, Barry Nigrosh, Jenn Ferree, Nancy Diessner, Halley Glier, Jane Kent Those attending voted unanimously to elect officers: President: co-held by Jaime Caron and Anita F¨¢bos Treasurer: Carol MacColl Secretary: Bob Sproull Those attending voted unanimously to elect board members: Ernie Alleva Jaime Caron Nancy Diessner Anita F¨¢bos Jenn Ferree Halley Glier Carol MacColl Craig Schiff Bob Sproull Moi Wurgaft (Benjamin Barnes and Christina Petersen emailed proxy votes in favor of both slates.) All approved the appointment of the equipment committee: Ernie Alleva Craig Schiff Bob suggested that the two should try to recruit a backup/successor. Boathouse cleanup: Jenn Opening/cleaning/social event planned for May 4 9-11 AM; rain date Sunday Jenn will make up a todo list; people can do the work at the event or any other time See https://tinyurl.com/yrcreserve tab named "Cleanup signup" Jenn will bring coffee and bagels Someone should bring a vacuum Barry will bring a large battery-operated shopvac There was discussion of whether we should continue US Rowing membership for the club; our only benefit is a discount on (some) insurance. We need to find out more about our current insurance coverage and alternative insurers. Note that members may choose to join US Rowing (e.g., to row in a US Rowing-sanctioned race) whether or not YRC is a member. Carol has agreed to make a QR code sign to post at the boathouse so rowers can use their cell phones to check the river flow. Moi pointed out that we should expedite a decision about membership and rack fees so that the forms on the web site can be updated, and so that members can pay their fees before the season starts. Since all members of the Board were present at the meeting, we decided to convene a Board meeting: The board meeting was called to order. Carol reported that although we were slightly in the red last year, membership we have now is likely to be stable. Rent is increasing $100/mo. She proposed we increase annual membership and rack fees by $25. This is a modest increase that keeps us stable and avoids tapping into our "rainy day fund." The board voted unanimously in favor of Carol's proposal. Carol will update the forms; Moi will put them on the website; Anita/Jaime will send a message to the members. The board meeting was adjourned. Other business: Clare Doyle (Smith College coach) has raised concerns about the hazards of logs hung up on the bridge supports; several YRC members echoed or amplified concern. It's not clear what organization is responsible for maintenance items such as this, and also the deployment of navigation and "slow wake" buoys. The suggestion was made to send email to our state representative, Lindsay Sabadosa http://lindsaysabadosa.com to call attention to the hazards. Bob will talk to the MA river steward for Connecticut River Conservancy, Nina Gordon-Kirsch, to try to identify responsibility and funding for these items. Thanks to Craig for marking snags during the season. Comments, corrections to Bob Sproull, secy

YRC 2024 Season - Application & Waiver 6
Hi Everyone! On behalf of the Board, we are forwarding along the 2024 YRC Application and Waiver (see attached). As you will see, the membership dues and fees have increased slightly - an additional $25 for membership and $25 for rack space. This slight increase is to meet our increased expenses; rent has gone up and membership numbers have changed over the years. Thank you for sending the application, waiver, and your payment to YRC¡¯s mailing address, noted on the Application (P.O. Box 1451 Northampton, MA 01061-1451) BEFORE your rowing season begins. Each member is required to complete this process before taking your/a boat out on the river. Ernie reports that the temperature of the water has been holding steady at around 50 degrees. The water height and flow has been high but is expected to be coming down. We look forward to sending out an email soon regarding the opening of the boathouse and the 2024 season. Until then, the YRC Board looks forward to seeing those who can make it on Saturday, May 4th from 9:00-11:00 for our Annual Boathouse Clean Up. We also wanted to take this opportunity to remind folks that the Yankee Rowing Club website is a great resource. (https://galleryofreaders.org/yankeerowing/). Among some fantastic photos of club members on the water and other information, there is also a section that provides helpful links, including important safety info and a link to the water flow readings (https://galleryofreaders.org/yankeerowing/useful-links/). While we will open the club for boat usage once the flow drops below 20 kcfs, we urge you to regularly check the water flow before rowing, as it can fluctuate a great deal from day to day throughout the season. Hope to see you soon! May this be a glorious rowing season for all! Best, Jaime & Anita Yankee Rowing Club Co-Presidents

Car rack and Vespoli Slings
YRC: I just called up John Matthews to personally thank him. He donated a really nice single car rack and a sweet pair of high Vespoli slings which lock. This was a really nice gesture and I wanted him to know we appreciate it. No need for reply NNFR. Craig

Leaving the Valley 8
To Yankee members: I am retiring from the valley after 29 years to move to Canandaigua Lake in the Finger Lakes (near our 27-year-old daughter ¨C 15 minutes instead of 6 hours). Where I will take up the Star (2012 Olympic Class) racing sailboat (letting my daughter helm the boat while I cast my heavyweight self over the side). I left my Vespoli car rack and 2 slings by the hoses for boat club. I really enjoyed being a member a while ago and look back fondly at the memories of rowing on the Connecticut. I wish you all the best! Fair winds and following seas, mates. ---©\------------------------- John Mathews 79 Mount Warner Road Hadley, MA 01035 413-335-0701

Gauging YRC member interest in coached sculling sessions 2
Dear YRC members, Like us, our friends upriver at Northampton Community Rowing are getting ready for spring! Sally Linowski, NCR president, is gauging interest in putting together coached sculling sessions in spring and summer. They are considering an evening session in spring in quads, doubles and singles if possible--with an accompanying coach and launch for safety and instruction, workout etc. A summer session would likely be Tuesday, Thursday. and Saturday mornings. Folks could use NCR equipment or row from Yankee to meet up with the class. The cost would be $350-400 for each 8 week session. Would you please email Sally directly (president@...) with questions and expressions of interest? We will be sure to keep you updated with any news or changes. Indoor Training for Fitness, Strength and Mobility
Hi Scullers! I¡¯m sad to see the end of our time on the water but gearing up for indoor rowing shenanigans. This year, NCR is having indoor training at All Sports on MWF am. We have the entire soccer field to use so we have room for body weight circuits, weight training, yoga and erging. Our coaches Mike and Katie are leading the fun. The cost is $300 with a discount for under 25 or over age 70. And any low income youth from Northampton can join for free thanks to our ARPA grant. Please share with any aspiring youth you think would like to learn to row. The youth team shares the space with us but we take different sides of the field to train. Occasionally we do a relay together which is wicked fun. The link to sign up is on the registration tab here. https://northamptoncommunityrowing.org/register-1 Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks. Sally Sally Linowski President, NCR Board of Directors
