YRC 2024 Season - Application & Waiver 6
Hi Everyone! On behalf of the Board, we are forwarding along the 2024 YRC Application and Waiver (see attached). As you will see, the membership dues and fees have increased slightly - an additional $25 for membership and $25 for rack space. This slight increase is to meet our increased expenses; rent has gone up and membership numbers have changed over the years. Thank you for sending the application, waiver, and your payment to YRC’s mailing address, noted on the Application (P.O. Box 1451 Northampton, MA 01061-1451) BEFORE your rowing season begins. Each member is required to complete this process before taking your/a boat out on the river. Ernie reports that the temperature of the water has been holding steady at around 50 degrees. The water height and flow has been high but is expected to be coming down. We look forward to sending out an email soon regarding the opening of the boathouse and the 2024 season. Until then, the YRC Board looks forward to seeing those who can make it on Saturday, May 4th from 9:00-11:00 for our Annual Boathouse Clean Up. We also wanted to take this opportunity to remind folks that the Yankee Rowing Club website is a great resource. (https://galleryofreaders.org/yankeerowing/). Among some fantastic photos of club members on the water and other information, there is also a section that provides helpful links, including important safety info and a link to the water flow readings (https://galleryofreaders.org/yankeerowing/useful-links/). While we will open the club for boat usage once the flow drops below 20 kcfs, we urge you to regularly check the water flow before rowing, as it can fluctuate a great deal from day to day throughout the season. Hope to see you soon! May this be a glorious rowing season for all! Best, Jaime & Anita Yankee Rowing Club Co-Presidents

Car rack and Vespoli Slings
YRC: I just called up John Matthews to personally thank him. He donated a really nice single car rack and a sweet pair of high Vespoli slings which lock. This was a really nice gesture and I wanted him to know we appreciate it. No need for reply NNFR. Craig

Leaving the Valley 8
To Yankee members: I am retiring from the valley after 29 years to move to Canandaigua Lake in the Finger Lakes (near our 27-year-old daughter – 15 minutes instead of 6 hours). Where I will take up the Star (2012 Olympic Class) racing sailboat (letting my daughter helm the boat while I cast my heavyweight self over the side). I left my Vespoli car rack and 2 slings by the hoses for boat club. I really enjoyed being a member a while ago and look back fondly at the memories of rowing on the Connecticut. I wish you all the best! Fair winds and following seas, mates. ---‐------------------------- John Mathews 79 Mount Warner Road Hadley, MA 01035 413-335-0701

Gauging YRC member interest in coached sculling sessions 2
Dear YRC members, Like us, our friends upriver at Northampton Community Rowing are getting ready for spring! Sally Linowski, NCR president, is gauging interest in putting together coached sculling sessions in spring and summer. They are considering an evening session in spring in quads, doubles and singles if possible--with an accompanying coach and launch for safety and instruction, workout etc. A summer session would likely be Tuesday, Thursday. and Saturday mornings. Folks could use NCR equipment or row from Yankee to meet up with the class. The cost would be $350-400 for each 8 week session. Would you please email Sally directly (president@...) with questions and expressions of interest? We will be sure to keep you updated with any news or changes. Indoor Training for Fitness, Strength and Mobility
Hi Scullers! I’m sad to see the end of our time on the water but gearing up for indoor rowing shenanigans. This year, NCR is having indoor training at All Sports on MWF am. We have the entire soccer field to use so we have room for body weight circuits, weight training, yoga and erging. Our coaches Mike and Katie are leading the fun. The cost is $300 with a discount for under 25 or over age 70. And any low income youth from Northampton can join for free thanks to our ARPA grant. Please share with any aspiring youth you think would like to learn to row. The youth team shares the space with us but we take different sides of the field to train. Occasionally we do a relay together which is wicked fun. The link to sign up is on the registration tab here. https://northamptoncommunityrowing.org/register-1 Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks. Sally Sally Linowski President, NCR Board of Directors

End of YRC Season 2023 - Too Soon! 3
Hello Fellow YRC Members! Anita and I are writing to let you know that YRC 2023 rowing season officially closed. Ernie’s water temp check reflects that the water is now 47 degrees, and the forecast for the next 10 days doesn't offer hope of things warming up much. This means that club boats are no longer available. Private boat owners can row of course, though we urge caution. As we reflect on the season, one cannot help but recognize the good fortune of being able to row on such a beautiful body of water. We are also so fortunate to have another year’s use of a great little boathouse that is such a great home for our boats and meeting place for all who love this incredible sport. This year also brought surprises that impacted our ability to row - like flood waters that haven’t been seen in years and even sewage. (Blick!) Sadly, it was a shorter season than usual. This year also included the loss of a longtime YRC member, Andy Larkin. He will always be a part of the beauty and flow of the river. May he rest in peace. Finally, we want to express gratitude and thanks to Craig who has tirelessly contributed countless hours to the club, our fleet, and all club members. Craig’s skills and commitment to maintaining and repairing club boats, his willingness to helping members with their own boats, his commitment to ensuring obstacles on the river are visible to all - just to mention just a few of the many thing Craig does -improves the experience of every member of the club. Thank you Craig for your enduring commitment and invaluable contributions to YRC and its members. Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Be well! Peace, Jaime & Anita YRC Co-Presidents

Double, now drying.
To all concern: The Double had some water inside it. I drilled a small stern hole, a few cups came out. I opened the small vent hole near the Stern foot-stretcher also. We will keep it like this for 2 days; then test it for leakage On The Water. It should be fine. because a huge amount entered when fin box damaged and I think it was just trapped. Double fixed 6
You can use the double again I have fixed the Fin box . But be aware, you can’t put the boat down on the Sling cloth. I’ll be painting it a bright fluorescent yellow, so you can see it better, but pay attention. When you carry the boat, the Fin is only held in place by a small foam piece glued to the inner hull. It won’t withstand the weight of the boat if ON the sling cloth . The dark color of the hull blends in and hides the fin which is why no one knew there was damage . Just add water and enjoy. Craig
