I'm a little behind on producing a patch. However, if you're willing to try it, I have a possible solution, but I can't test it myself yet (my one Windows system is deliberately kept behind on its Java version for testing purposes).

?

I have posted the 64-bit version of the relevant Microsoft Visual Studio runtime library DLL on my website at

?

Assuming you are using a 64-bit version of Java, if you could download this file and put it in the directory %HOME%/.jssc/win64 (this should have been created the last time you ran YAAC), then try starting YAAC again. If the serial ports work again, then the fix I'm planning will work.

?

By the way, did you mean build 156 of YAAC? I haven't released build 157 yet, so I'm not sure where you could have gotten it.

OK, Dave, I'm going to need to have you provide me some debugging information:

1. what exact build of YAAC are you using (as displayed in the title bar of the map window), something like YAAC 1.0-beta156? I need to know if you are using an older build that might have problems.

2. a copy of the YAAC.out file from your configured log file directory (as seen on the File->Configure->Expert Mode dialog on the General tab). This file contains any unhandled error messages that have occurred while YAAC is running.

If you send any more screenshots, please do not crop off the edges of the YAAC windows; it was very difficult to figure out where you were without coordinate information (such as is provided by the lower-left corner of the YAAC map window) and zoom information (as shown by the map scale at the top of the map window).

? "Importing is very easy. On the YAAC menu, select File->OpenStreetMap->Download Pre-Imported Tiles, then when the dialog box comes up, select the area you want to download (re-downloads just overwrite your existing map data with newer data), and click OK to start the transfer.? "

this has been done several times, and I still have no maps showing.

Re: java heap error message on rasp pi 3 when trying to download maps

Unless you explicitly need map data I haven't made available on my website yet (I'm about a month behind right now) and have a machine large enough to handle the extremely expensive process of converting the OpenStreetMap database export PBF or BZ2 file into YAAC binary map data, I strongly recommend that you just let each computer running YAAC download the pre-imported binary files on my website. This avoids version compatibility issues and probable heap exhaustion failures on undersized machines; I have to use a large gaming system with 36GB of RAM and a solid state disk just for the temporary index files to import the planet-sized OpenStreetMap export file, and that still takes over a day on such oversized hardware.

It is almost guaranteed that a Raspberry Pi cannot get enough heap memory to do an OpenStreetMap import, and it will certainly burn out your SD card unless you have some other kind of disk storage connected to the Pi to support the import operation.

Importing is very easy. On the YAAC menu, select File->OpenStreetMap->Download Pre-Imported Tiles, then when the dialog box comes up, select the area you want to download (re-downloads just overwrite your existing map data with newer data), and click OK to start the transfer.

Re: Beginner needs guidance

You don't run YAAC plugins as separate programs. They are extensions to YAAC itself, basically additional libraries that are runtime-linked into YAAC to add extra functionality to the core distribution of YAAC. As some of these extra functionalities add more computer overhead to YAAC, the intent was that you would only add to your YAAC installation the plugins you actually need, rather than jamming them all into the core distribution and creating bloatware.

The Help menu's Install Plugins choice allows you to see what plugins are available, and properly install them into YAAC. Basically, the plugins are Java JAR files that are placed into the plugins subdirectory of your YAAC installation, and are linked in when YAAC starts up. However, some plugins require additional 3rd party libraries which also need to be installed correctly, and the Install Plugins menu choice handles those operations on a per-plugin basis. Plugins that are distributed as .zip files instead of .jar files are those more complex plugins, where the .zip file contains the .jar file of the plugin plus whatever extras that plugin .jar file needs.

YAAC can take advantage of a connected GPS to update your beacon position dynamically (useful for a mobile station). It also makes the repeaterfinder plugin's functionality more powerful by preferring repeaters that are ahead of you on your current course of travel versus repeaters you have already passed by.

I'm really enjoying YAAC, I'm running an SDRPlayDx with SRDUno to Direwolf to YAAC on a Windows10 system. I've read through the instructions but I'm missing something in understanding how to run plugins. I've downloaded the demo and in the configuration listed what directory it is in but when I click on the plugin demo.jar nothing happens. I do have the latest version of both YAAC and Java. What am I missing?

Also, since I don't travel much and am using a laptop, would there be any advantage or extra features connecting the laptop to a GPS?

I'm sure I'll have more questions but so far over all using YAAC has gone very smoothly.

Regards,

Steve

Re: java heap error message on rasp pi 3 when trying to download maps

I installed YAAC on a PC(windows or linux) then used YAAC on the PC to download the maps I wanted. I then transferred those maps to the Pi via a file transfer program.
