change of venue for today's dance

Due to the heat and humidity that is forecast for this afternoon, today's dance will be moved to the Independent Media Center (IMC) in downtown Urbana. This is the old Post Office at the corner of Broadway and Elm, on the north side of Lincoln Square Mall.

afternoon contra in the park on Sunday

There will be a special contra dance on Sunday, August 20. The dance will be in the late afternoon at the Pavilion near the Lake House in Crystal Lake Park. The dance will run from 4 to 6 p.m. and will be followed by a potluck dinner.
The Bow-Dacious String Band will be playing for part of the time. There will also be an Open Band led by Acoustic Mayhem, so bring your instruments if you would like to join in. Kristi Emilsson will be the caller. It's going to be hot on Sunday, but it should be a fun event. I hope everyone will come out and join us. Jonathan |

Some additional information about the dance. It is being held by RegCakes Bakery at the Mall to celebrate their 2nd year in Lincoln Square Mall. They share space with Cloud Mountain, which will be open for the event.

There will be a dance at Cloud Mountain Kombucha in Lincoln Square Mall on Thursday, August 3. It will run from 6 to 8 p.m. The band will be Fiddle Sax Fusion and Kristi Emilsson will be calling. It sounds like a fun event, so if you are free that evening come and check it out.

contra dance back at Phillips this Friday
As Dan Lewart says, after 1/3 of a decade (3 years and 4 months) we will be dancing at the Phillips Recreation Center in Urbana again this coming Friday, July 28. At Phillips masks will be optional and we won't be checking vaccinations (though we do encourage everyone to get all the vaccinations they are entitled to).
There will be some great music provided by Claire Johnson, Matt Turino and Sam Payne. I will be calling again and will lead a variety of fun dances. There will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30pm and the dance will start at 8. Bring your dance shoes and a snack to share at the break! As we slowly get back to normal we hope that some of the dancers we haven't seen for a while will make an effort to come to the dances again. It would be great to see some of the people who used to be regulars at the dance this Friday. Jonathan |

another dance opportunity this weekend

Since the contra dances are still only once a month, and will be for a while, I thought I would let everyone know about another chance to do some dancing to live music this weekend. The Central Illinois English Country Dancers is holding their monthly English dance on Sunday, July 23 from 1:30 to 4:30 at the Mansfield United Methodist Church. The address is 200 East Illinois St. in Mansfield, about 15 minutes west of Champaign on I-74.
There are many similarities between contra and ECD. Some differences as well, but both are taught and then called to live music. Masks are now optional at our dances. Bring your water bottle and soft-soled shoes to protect the floor in the hall. If you would be interested in carpooling, either getting a ride or taking some passengers, let me know. We'll try to work out a pool of people who can carry some people to the dance and a central location in C-U for everyone to meet. We have a nice program of fun dances prepared for Sunday, so I hope that you will consider joining us. Jonathan |

Our June contra dance will be this Friday, June 23 at the Channing-Murray Foundation in Urbana. The music will be provided by Miriam Larson and Matt Turino, so we'll have some great tunes to dance to. I will be calling and I'll try to put together some fun dances.
There will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30pm and the dance will start at 8. Bring your water bottle and a snack to share at the break! We still require that everyone wears a mask while inside the building and presents proof of up to date vaccination. There may be some changes to this policy in the near future, but for the moment it is still the same. I hope everyone will come out and join us for some fun music and dance. Jonathan |

Our next contra dance at Channing-Murray will be on Friday, June 23. However, there are a couple of dance opportunities this coming weekend.
On Friday, June 2 I will be calling a dance for the Steampunk festival in Bloomington, Illinois. The band will be the Bandicoots from Chicago with Meg Dedolph and Jonathan Whitall from The Cosmic Otters, along with Jeremy Ward on cello. The dance will be held at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts and starts at 7 p.m. Then on Sunday, June 4 there will be a free contra dance at Channing-Murray in Urbana. This will be part of the Center For the Arts (C4A) Fiddle Weekend in Urbana. The dance will be from 3 to 5 in the afternoon. Kristi Emilsson will be calling and the band will be Patt and Possum plus members of the weekend faculty and fiddle orchestra. Masks will be required while dancing, but proof of vaccination is not. Our next dance will be this Friday, May 26 at the Channing-Murray Foundation in Urbana. This should be a great evening of music and dance. The band will be Meadowhawk with Amanda Ramey, Claire Johnson & Matt Turino. The caller for the evening will be Miriam Larson.

A very special Americana Happy Hour featuring brought to you by the & ! Thursday, May 18th 5-7pm. Clinton Davis is an old time folk musician currently based in San Diego, California. A fifth-generation Kentuckian, Davis grew up in rural Carroll County. His repertoire spans fiddle and banjo music native to his family home, the exuberant ragtime piano and guitar of early 20th-century New Orleans, and ballad songs and dance music of the Southwest. Davis¡¯ prowess across instruments and traditional American styles has gained notice from the standard-bearers of previous generations, and earned him a place amongst a new generation of American folk musicians. Stefan Grossman, renowned authority of American roots guitar, has called him ¡°a master¡carrying on the traditional music torch of Mike Seeger.¡± No Depression has called his work ¡°a joyous and soulfulrestoration of one of the lost treasures of American musical tradition.¡± Deering Banjos has called his playing ¡°simply sublime.¡± In 2022, in recognition of his work as a performer and educator, Davis was named a Kentucky Colonel, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the state of Kentucky. |
