Re: toyota/MH service&repair in MI.

Hi Allan & Linda,

Amy and I live in Westland, but I (Owen) work in Farmington Hills @
TRW (right off Research Drive off 10 mile....just down the street from
Bob sacks Toyota....which is where I bought my oil filter and upper
rad hose).

Harold's is a good shop....after looking at our MH they told us it
needed nothing (pretty honest I would say) and I have had much work
done there.

Thanks for the recommendation of Bob Sacks...for some reason I never
thought of going there for srevice....although on my last trip there I
did see a very nice Toyota MH being serviced there.....it looked a lot
newer than ours....

We will be gone during the proposed get together, but we will be in
touch.

Changing the engine thermostat

Hello all,

Well Amy and I are getting ready for our trip and I just finished
changing the radiator hoses & clamps. I had to buy an upper radiator
hose from the dealership ($16) because the one I bought from Murray's
was not quite correct. I had to bend it too much to make it fit, and
that made me feel uncomfortable with it holding up in the mountains.

I also removed the thermostat and am replacing it with a 180 degree
one. I have done this many times on other vehicles but I have found
something new on my Toyota. There is no paper-like material gasket
between the thermostat housing where it attaches to the engine. But
there is a rubber seal that goes around the thermostat itself. Do I
need to put any sealant between the thermostat housing and the
engine?? It looks like a very neat way to seal it up (the rubber seal
I mean) but I have never seen it done this way. Any help.....

See ya on the road,

Owen & Amy

your new motorhome

Congradulations on your Odyssey. That sounds great!. I bought a
1986 22ft Rogue. It is really like 21ft but has a rear bumper
extention with a nice storage box on it. It has 46k miles.
automatic..roof and dash air..rear bath..sofa with a captains chair.
I love it..a really nice camper. I went to Pep Boys lastnight and
bought a transmission oil cooler. They had 3 to choose from for a
Toyota truck chassy. The heavy duty one I bought was $49
dollars..surely worth it. I am servicing the tranny with a new
screne, fluid, flushing the radiator. It seemed to be just tuned up.
The biggest disappointment was to find after joining this board a few
weeks ago, was that it had the cheezy small rear end. I called all
over Egypt, and found a RV dealer that can sell me one of the kits
that they used for the recall (a new kit) for $1000.00. I will do
the install myself. so I guess the old saying if it seems too good to
be true, then sometimes it is..although I will still have just over
5k in it..and I think it is nice.
I took it last week to the local mountains here in La. Me and a
friend went to a place called Chialo. It is about 50 miles from La.
We got up there at night and it was snowing too hard to stay . We
found a camp ground at a little lower elevation and stayed the night
and went back there the next day to camp. All the upper level camp
grounds were closed because of snow still. We found a place in a camp
ground to stay off the road and no one messed with us. The camp
ground was closed so no one was up there. THis was on the entry road.
It was so nice to get into "no noise". Living in a big city is so
hard with the constant back ground noise. Toyota campers have been my
savior the last few years, good on gas so you can leave just about
anytime.

It is so nice to have such a wealth of information on here. I was
a mechanic back in Biloxi Mississippi for 10 years back in the 80's
and it is fun to hear about some people who talk mechanics again.
Good luck with the camper..bye..Tommy

Recently bought a 1982 Toyota Sandtana with about 100,000 miles on it. We
are in love with it and have fondly nicknamed it "Carlos." It's in pretty
good condition, we test drove it on a Portland - California weekender and
it did great.

We will set out on the great American road trip this summer and would love
to hear any advice and tips on types of things we may want to do/check
before we take off to make Carlos more dependable and comfy.

Also, we have a "welded propane tank" and no propane tank experience or
knowledge. We are told this type of tank is not legal and that it will be
difficult to get it filled. We are not sure what to do about it and we
want to research its safety or lack thereof. Has anyone dealt with a
similar issue?

Thanks!

Inspecting and buying the Odyssey

Rosannah,
Thanks for the detailed report of your inspecting and buying of the Odyssey. I learned alot from it. You worried about it being too detailed; well, I would have liked more details. But then, that's me.

It looks like you were very thorough; getting advice from multiple places, each of whom had their own axe to grind.

I don't know what the compression readings should be, could someone post them? But I do remember that it is good to have readings that are close to each other, even if that number is somewhat below the "proper" reading.

I'd enjoy hearing a report in a month or two about how it has operated, and any problems that developed.

The price of $8300 sounds good. Can anyone else comment on that?

Subject: [toyota-campers] Odyssey update

Many thanks again to all who offered comments and advice, we really
appreciate it. Thought you might like to hear an update--somebody
please stop me if the play-by-play gets to be irritating.

Today we brought the Odyssey to a shop in town (which was
recommended by a local RV business) and got the following information:

Compression: 190-182-190-188

Supsension, brakes, belts, hoses, exhaust, transmission,
differential, charging, and starting system were all checked.

The only problems noted were:

Idler arm in the steering system has a little slack in it, but the
mechanic said this isn't a problem that needs to be fixed
immediately, and isn't a safety hazard right now.

Muffler should be replaced, though not immediately.

Rear supsension air bags are leaking (it may be in the hoses, clamps,
or bags, he wasn't sure) and should be replaced.

A couple of the running lights don't work, but this isn't a major
fix, according to the shop.

I checked with an RV repair place and they said the air bags cost
around $300 for a complete kit, but it's unlikely the whole system is
broken, and guessed the cost of repair might run $200-350.

The muffler might be around $100-150, and I was told the idler arm is
around $150 to fix.

The mechanic took it out and listened to the transmission as he drove
and said it sounded fine, and that the repair looked good. He said
the rig looked very good, that it seemed very sound, overall.

My husband drove the Odyssey up a big steep hill in town and said it
sounded good, and had decent power in 2nd.

The transmission rebuild was done by a transmission shop in Oregon
City, and there's another branch of the shop in Springfield, near
where we live. It's warranteed for a year or 12,000 miles--it's got
only 3000 miles on it since it was replaced, but the year warrantee
runs out in late May. The paperwork says the transmission was
rebuilt, for a total cost of $1200.

My husband took the transmission repair paperwork to AAMCO and the
manager there looked it over. He gave comparative prices, and it
looks like AAMCO's labor is twice what this shop's price ($2400), so
that accounts for $200 of the difference in price. He said that
AAMCO only uses new parts, and it's "always best to pay top dollar"
but he also noted that the rig has had 12 months of use and it's run
okay, so it's probably going to be allright. He advised us to always
make sure the fluids were at the right level and clean, and it should
be fine.

Overall, it looks like the vehicle is mechanically sound, and the
mechanics we spoke with said it looked good and that it should be
good for many more miles of use.

To make a long story short, we offered the couple $8300 and they
accepted, and it looks like we'll be closing the deal tomorrow,
barring unforeseen circumstances. I'd like to take it out on the
road for a local camping trip as soon as possible--it's a super nice
motorhome and I'm excited it appears to be in good working order.
Now we just need to read the manuals and figure out how to make
everything work inside....

Thanks to all who offered such helpful advice and encouragement; I've
learned so much in the short time I've been on this list, it's really
great.

best,

Rosannah

motorhome and I'm excited it appears to be in good working order.
Now we just need to read the manuals and figure out how to make
everything work inside....

Thanks to all who offered such helpful advice and encouragement; I've
learned so much in the short time I've been on this list, it's really
great.

best,

Yes it is a State Forest camp ground and I
mis-quoted the cost. It's only $6.00 a night.

I camped there 3 times last year and at times
my friend and I were the only ones in the camp
ground. (Week days). Many of the sites back
right up to Lake Huron and a few steps through
the trees puts you right on the beach.

No reservations are possible, just pick up an
envelope at the post and find a camp site.
If you can run up any Fri or weekday afternoon
you are almost sure to find a spot. Here's how
you get there:

Run up 23/75 to the Pinconning exit, go East
to the little town of Pinconning. Turn left
(N-13) through town, then stop at "Wilsons"
on the right, and buy much Pinconning cheese,
and fresh baked bread, and a couple bottles
of wine. Head out North again on #13 and it
will run into old #23N. Continue N. while
eating cheese and bread. Save wine for later.

GO all the way up old #23, a nice drive all
along the lake, to the little, non-town of
Ossineke. You will see a store/gas-station
on the left,in Ossineke. Go about 1-2 mile
more north, still on #23 and you will see
a faded sign saying State Forest. Turn right,
go past the church, and you will see little
brown signs pointing you to the camp ground.

Campfire wood can be puchased around here
just outside the camp ground.

My secret is out, It's a great spot
Happy camping. And hope we all meet
soon.
