Software for SR40 7
Hello Rockers Built a SoftRock40 and tried the more common SW packs available for Win. Running winxp home on a 1.4 Centrino laptop with a SB audigy 2 NX (usb) With PowerSdr had to use 2048 blocks and 45 ms latency to get it to work without hiccups. (all other features are very nice). With Alberto I2PHD SDRadio again had to use 2048 blocks and 48khz (liked better the way BandWidth is controlled) at 96 khz sampling it begins to sound rough and hiccupy. Then came Phil Covington's SharpDsp MiniConsole (which still lacks a panadapter display and some other niceties) and here I can set a 4096 blocks value (some more latency, true) and Lo and Behold! works really nicely with 96 khz sampling rate. Now I get more than 90 khz of the band (which in region 1 is almost all the band!!). Amazingly the sensitivity is uniform all the way (heard a rumor that even at 96 khz there is a AntiAliasing analog filter on the Audigy input...proven wrong!) Tried the new Rocky by Alex VE3NEA and regrettably it does not work with my Audigy (gives a 'unable to start input from SoundBlaster Audigy 2 NX) so cannot test operation at 96 khz. Well I'll wait and see if more people have the same problem... Will try to operate on external supply and see if the noise at the LO is power supplied by the USB or a ground loop (or both). Hav'nt seen the I/Q automatic balancing work yet but in the other SW packs it is really something to be addressed because the image once nulled on a certain frequency is definitly growing and changing on other freq. So a mapping (table and interpolation) or the automatic way shoult be implemented IMHO. Have a nice (Rocky??) weekend de Joe

gnurokr - gnuradio program to listen with softrock40
Folks, I have a crude first version of a demodulator for softrock, which I call gnurokr. Currently, it cannot do I/Q correction and other fancy stuff. It was put together today after assembling my softrock40 kit. It took lesser time than assembling the hardware itself and demonstrates the speed at which one can "build" a radio with Software. I wrote it because I wanted to learn more about GNURadio and also that all available SDR programs were targetted at non-GNU/Linux platforms. gnurokr cannot match the facilities provided by those right now and is not really release worthy, but I hope as time passes by, more stuff will be added to it. I hope GNU/Linux users can now rejoice! The code is available at: http://www.hackgnu.org/gnuradio/sr40/ Listening to a late-night 40m net now.. -- 73 - Ramakrishnan, VU3RDD

My softrock40 is picking up some strong stations and even when the software is not running, my headphone is picking up those. I guess I need to put my board into a shileded box with a seperate PSU. -- 73 - Ramakrishnan, VU3RDD

PowerSDR Error at Execution 6
Where do I find the setup instructions for the PowerSDR software. Found one link to them was broken, and the other said I had to overlay the binary with other.. but that was all it said. What does this mean? Tried just running the executable and all I got was an "Initializing Database" along with the following error message box. See attached. Bill

Rocky and PowerSDR
Can't seem to get "Rocky" to work with this sound card (Santa Cruz) but boy does it work with the "PowerSDR" software (chunking along at 50-60% CPU). Hats off to you guys involved with bringing this little hardware demo system out and to Gerald Youngblood and his team for some teriffic software. The computer I'm using 1.7Ghz Celeron, didn't have the correct B.Gates MDAC sw for installation and had a problem downloading over dial up ....so I installed on another machine and moved the whole V1.4.4 FlexRadio Systems file over (with the SR-40 mods) and it works fine now. 73 Kees K5BCQ

Alex, I sent you the WDM file for the Santa Cruz, as you requested, directly. Thanks. 73 Kees K5BCQ ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: windy10605@... To: softrock40@... M-Audio Delta 44 in UK 2
I've just ordered an M-Audio Delta 44 from these people: http://www.nusystems.co.uk/product/M-Audio.Delta.44 ???99.00 including delivery is the cheapest I've been able to find it for. I suppose someone will now find one for a lot less. 8-( 73, Leon -- Leon Heller, G1HSM leon.heller@... http://www.geocities.com/leon_heller --- [This E-mail has been scanned for viruses but it is your responsibility to maintain up to date anti virus software on the device that you are currently using to read this email. ]

Rocky and soundcards 15
I apologize for the problems that Rocky has with some soundcard types. The WDM audio interface is poorly documented, and I had to do some trial and error work to make the code open my Delta44. Other cards may require a bit more work. This depends on your feedback since Delta is the only 24-bit card that I have. I have made some changes to the code that may or may not solve the problem. V.1.01 of Rocky is now available at http://www.dxatlas.com/rocky/rockysetup.zip - please give it a try. 73 Alex VE3NEA

Rocky Problem 7
Can run the PowerSDR test wav files and both PowerSDR and SDRadio can pick the CW audio up OK. But Rocky gives an error message, "Input Device Does Not Support Selected Parameters". Is it possible to test Rocky just off of a wave file? Bill WB5TCO

"Rocky" working great while PC is busy.
An interesting item about the "Rocky" software, I was in the middle of setting up an new PC but I already had the Rocky software installed. I was installing C# from Microsoft and also copying about 6 Gigs of files from another PC, running email, and surfing the web, needless to say the PC was busy running about 40% to 75% utilization. Just for fun I decided to run the Rocky software, and while the PC is busy as could be, it would not skip a bit, it's sitting here working great. I sure wish the source was available, I wouldn't have to mess around with C#, just fire up good old Delphi, and tweak away. Cecil Bayona KD5NWA www.qrpradio.com I fail to see why doing the same thing over and over and getting the same results every time is insanity: I've almost proved it isn't; only a few more tests now and I'm sure results will differ this time ...

7.056Mhz 3
What generates the nice 7.054- 7.056Mhz signal on the computer (PowerSDR or Rocky) when the SR-40 is not installed ? Excellent choice for the crystal freq, by the way. No sense having 2 large spurs. I realize there are going to be small spurs because of the inherent nature of computer clocking and signal transition radiations. I'm not surrounded by SR-40 users but out of curiosity, how much of the OSC does it put OUT into the antenna ? 73 Kees K5BCQ

(and thus will be at the center of the display (because of the way the I/Q is processed) regardless of the SR40. From my measurment when the SR40 is working it gets -40dbm signal to the antenna.(at the 7.056 Mhz) and very little at twice thrice and at 28.224Mhz 73 de Joe

Two switch QSD test 6
Good Evening All, I am testing a two switch QSD circuit for use in the v5.0 SoftRock. The switches in the QSD are each on for 50% of the clock cycle and staggered by 90 degrees. All other circuits in this test version of the SoftRock are the same as the v4.0 SoftRock. In the present v4.0 SoftRock there are four switches with each switch on for 25% of the clock cycle. Two switches, staggered by 180 degrees, connect alternate ends of transformer T1,(+/-RF), to the I- signal integrating cap. In the same maner but 90 degrees offset from the I-clocking, two switches provide the input to the Q-signal integrating cap. Typical performance with the v4.0 is a noise baseline of about -139dBm when PowerSDR is calibrated for -73dBm at 50uV RMS. With this two switch QSD SoftRock I am seeing a 3dB decrease in signal strength compared to a v4.0 when checking with a -73dBm source. The noise baseline comes up to -135dBm when PowerSDR is calibrated with the two switch QSD to -73dBm. Some loss of sensitivity but still a MDS on the order of -131dBm. Still working on the schematic for the v5.0 SoftRock, but hope to have it ready to post soon. 73, Tony KB9YIG

Sound Card Comparison Question
The Soundblaster Audigy2 ZS and The Creative Labs Audigy2 ZS sound cards have the same specifications, EXCEPT maximum sample rate: Soundblaster: 24 bits at 96Khz Creative Labs: 24 bits at 192Khz. Are these in fact the same card design just speced differently, or is there a clear advantage to the Creative Labs version? Phil Stewart
