Will it be able to be driven with an external oscillator? How many thousand
kits will there be in the first batch?

Target kit price is in the mid-twenty dollar range for one set of
boards and components for a single band.? Additional band kits might
be on the order of $12 each with 80 meters through 30 meters and
possibly 20 meters also covered.

Please let me know if there would be any interest in such a kit.

Re: brain freeze

Steve, there is nothing sacred about the crystal case being grounded. There is no real need to solder it to ground.

It's there for mechanical stability, since the crystal isn't laying flat on the board like it was made to do.

If you leave it hanging in mid air, it will be somewhat more unstable, mostly just more susceptible to vibration being able to modulate the output frequency of the unit (microphonic).

It looks like you can attach a piece of stiff wire to the xtal, and wrap it around the edge of the board to the underside and solder it to the ground plane there.

I left mine hanging in mid air on long lead with nothing securing it because I intend to remove it later to facilitate the DDS install. It runs just fine, even though it's not quite technically correct.

It also looks like you can drill the hole yourself, because it goes to teh ground plane on the backside of the board, there is no problem if the hole placement isn't as precise as the intended hole position was.

Art

Version 5 SoftRock, anyone?

kb9yig

Hello Everyone,

I am working on a version 5.0 of the SoftRock receiver and want to
see if there is interest enough to do a kit. The version 5.0
SoftRock oscillator will be at the fundamental frequency and depend
on 90 degree phase shift network to generate the quadrature clocks
for the QSD. This should give more flexibility in finding suitable
crystals for various bands.

The version 5.0 will consist of a two board stack with each board
having dimensions about 1 inch by 1.5 inches. The bottom board of
the stack with have a 5 VDC regulator, two voltage comparitors, the
QSD circuit and the low noise audio amplifiers. The upper board
will contain the oscillator circuit, the 90 degree phase shift
network, and the BPF for the desired band. The two boards will be
joined electrically by a row of header pins on the top board and the
corresponding sockets on the lower board. A threaded standoff
between the two boards will provide for mechanically holding the
upper board to the lower board. Corner mounting holes will be
provided on the lower board.

External electrical connections to the lower board will include,
supply voltage (9-12 VDC), an antenna input and a stereo audio cable
for line-in connection to the PC.

Target kit price is in the mid-twenty dollar range for one set of
boards and components for a single band. Additional band kits might
be on the order of $12 each with 80 meters through 30 meters and
possibly 20 meters also covered.

Please let me know if there would be any interest in such a kit.

Thanks and 73,

It's Alive! Hot receiver

Had to jump in and say my SoftRock40 is working super too. What a hot
receiver! Finished the kit Sunday night, found the bad solder joint
after coming home from work this Monday night. Har It sure sounded
sweet when I heard signals for the first time.

This is one amazing little receiver! I have been tuning around all
evening copying CW on a busy 40 meters and looking for the weakest
signals up next to strong signals. This SDR does work. This receiver
is better than my Elecraft K1 by far.

I hope there will be a way to expand the band receive range in the
future.

Thanks to all involved in making this kit available at such a
reasonale price.

gain and phase are very close to the middle of the range for a fairly
good null. I don't expect much change when I use the XG-1 tomorrow.

When I click on the Power SDR icon on the Desktop, the SDR dialog box
comes up and it has "Softrock 40 Edition". The loading bar moves from
left to right. At about the halfway point of loading, another dialog box
comes over the top of the SDR dialog box "unhandled exception". The
loading stops. I have tried deleting the SDR programs and .NET
Framework, and downloading again, and reinstalling them. No change -
still "unhandled exception". Computer is 3.2 Ghz with 1Gb memory
running win XP Home Edition. Any suggestions? My SoftRock-40 card is
working on the bench.

Re: Success with SR-40

EricJ

Hi Chuck,

XG1 works with just about any crystal you stuff into
it. I occasionally use mine on 20 with a 14.060
crystal. The new XG2 uses exactly the same oscillator
circuit for 80/40/20 coverage with a little 3 position
rotary switch. They change the series cap value
between bands, though. That would be easy to implement
with dip pin sockets too.

The only major difference between the XG1 and XG2,
besides bandswitching crystals, is elimination of the
LMC6482 op amp for a low battery detector. It never
really worked for me anyway. I'm going to use it to
build a second Accuprobe for use in a NoGaWatt once
you do all the design work on yours. hi.

BTW, I bought an Accuprobe and once I saw it decided a
full-sized Altoids tin didn't qualified as a "probe".
So I built all the parts on a slim piece of perf board
and stuffed it in an aluminum cigar tube. Now it's a
PROBE. hi. Pictures on my web site. Works great!

SR-40 Folks,

Tony mentioned this to me. Hadn't seen it mentioined here on the lists so I'm passing it along for Tony...[g]

Use W1AW as a signal source. Note any difference in frequency when you zero beat the signal in the filter passband.

Then go to the Setup Book, SR-40 tab and adjust the frequency there accordingly.

Tony sez you can get really close this way -- W1AW frequency at 47.5 is pretty accurate.

Something I should have done first rather than stumble around and ask a lot of questions. There are two PDF files on the Flex Radio Systems download page. These are quick start and complete SDR-1000 operating manuals.

Some folks most likely did this first and were most helpful. But it did make it easire to understand the manuals...[g]
