Re: Copying an .SCH file to a new .PRO

I usually have many projects which could be seen as belonging to one category, as of meters.
To start a new project in a category (in the category folder), I simply copy/past the project folder which is closest to the new one and give it a new name, like meter_v4.
Yes, the names of files in all folders of a category are exactly the same. I mean in every project folder of a category the files names are duplicated, like meter.pro, meter.sch, meter.brd, meter.cmp... etc. Only the name of their project folder needs to be unique.

For instance, I am not privileged to download the new versions of Kicad since long ago (please don't ask why). Fortunately, I still have?Kicad BZR2356 which is much better than having no Kicad at all. Although it is a very old version, it has many practical functions besides being very friendly. Many thanks from me to its developers.

Thanks, Steve. I think I did what you advise, but it didn't work, so I probably didn't. I am using version 6.0.11, with the .kicad_xxx extensions, but I forgot to put them in my original post.

As in topic, I did a fresh install of 7.02 on a win10 fresh install. I can import my old board designs fine. Schematic crashes every time. CPU load goes way high, need to kill with task manager, red "X" doesn't work, get a "not responding", the "wait" circle stays on screen.? Anyone have any idea what I need to look for that is making kicad unhappy?

Announcing a change to Fedora Copr repositories

The following pertains to KiCad availability on Fedora Linux. Please note that none of what follows affects the official builds hosted by Fedora in any way. Everything below pertains only to the Copr repositories hosted by the KiCad team itself.

Previously, there was only one Copr repository for KiCad [1]. It contained both nightly builds of the development branch of KiCad and released builds of the stable branch of KiCad.

That arrangement turned out to be too limiting, because one might want to enable the repo to get nightly development builds, but might not want to get released builds from it. Additionally, the team wanted to make testing builds of the stable branch available, and adding a third thing to the repository would compound the problem.

Thus, the stable builds have been split off into a separate repository [2].

*IMPORTANT:* If you were previously getting your stable builds from [1], you *must* switch to [2], because no further stable builds will be added to [1]. To enable the new repository, simply issue the following command:

dnf copr enable @kicad/kicad-stable

The new testing builds of the stable branch are available in [3] and can be enabled by the following command:

dnf copr enable @kicad/kicad-testing

A few things to be aware of:

The builds in [2] and [3] share a namespace. If both repositories are enabled at the same time, they will effectively be combined; the build you get will always be the newest one available in either of the two repositories. In other words, if you enable both [2] and [3], a newer stable build will replace an older testing build, and a newer testing build will replace an older stable build.

The nightly development builds in [1] are completely independent of [2] and [3]. They live in a separate namespace, meaning that you can have both a nightly development build and a stable (or testing) build installed at the same time.

Just bear in mind that the development branch is sometimes unstable and often has bugs. The other issue that's bitten me, is that it is not usually back-compatible with the stable branch, i.e. if you encounter a problem and want to go back to the stable branch, you can't. That may not be an issue with 7 and 7.99, but it has been in the past.

I haven't tried converting LTspice schematics to KiCAD, but my experience with other converters - even those in paid-for tools, is that it doesn't often save any time because the conversion is rarely complete, sometimes still requires a lot of cleaning up. At the outset, you have make sure you have all symbols on both sides and that they are compatible. Remember, even for basic things like transistors, the pinouts are often not the same, e.g. in SPICE, transistors are C, B, E, regardless of the physical pin numbers.

Perhaps if you post a list of what you're looking looking for, you find they exist already. Whether they are to your taste, is another matter. But honestly, if you've created symbols in LTspice, it's? hardly more onerous to do it in KiCAD, and they'll be prettier.
