Just Upgraded to Decoder Pro 5.10 and Java 17, now NCE Power Pro and JMRI won't talk

Hi, I'm new here, mostly because my Decoder Pro and NCE system(s) have gotten along well for years through various computers and upgrades...now I've hit a wall, so any insights appreciated. Here's the hardware basics. NCE Power Pro 9 pin serial port command stations. Have two, tried two and same result. NCE latest Chip installed in both command stations, "March 22, 2021" Computer: Lenovo Pentium Silver N6000 4.0 GB ram. Windows 11. Using Com Port 3. Here's the situation, shifting Java and JMRI versions mentioned as follows. For about two years, I've been using this set up with JMRI 5.2 and Java 11. Aside from occasional hiccups, a pretty solid arrangement. Now I just received two locomotives with Soundtraxx Blunami decoders. Went to create a new locomotive file in Decoder Pro it wouldn't download the data. Figured, newest decoders...time for an upgrade to the latest version from JMRI. Went to upgrade to version 5.10. Says while it would work better with Java 17, would also be expected to work with Java 11. Decided to play it safe and stick with Java 11 for now. When bringing up Decoder Pro I received the dreaded red words. "Service Mode Programmer NCE Is Offline" - " Operations Mode Programmer NCE is Offline" Despite everything which follows, this has not changed. Next step, ok let's try Java 17--installed Java 17. No change. Then I took a risk, and installed JMRI 5.11.4, which is still under evaluation. Again. No Change. The NCE and JMRI are still not on speaking terms. Now, before anyone asks, the USB to Serial port cable came to me directly from NCE several years ago and had just been working. When I plug and unplug, it makes that booping sound, which means it's seeing something, but no communications. And besides, again, it was just working fine. Here's one area I suspect may be a problem, which is the Com Port 3 driver, which had not been an issue under JMRI 5.2 and Java 11 on my Windows 11 laptop. This is what shows up under driver files for "USB to Serial Cable (COM3): C:\WINDOWS\System32\serenup.sys (along with) C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\SVK9PL64 And of course, Device Manager says everything is working properly. In poring over the NCE, as well as JMRI trouble shooting pages and doing other on line searching, it appears there are more drivers that don't show up on my machine. But those posts go back many years to much earlier versions of both JMRI and JAVA. I honestly cannot say there was anything more on my machine prior to this, because it all worked. If there is a new driver I need which would work with the newest setup, let me know...along with a few hints on how to install it. Anyway, thanks in advance. I hope this isn't one of those obvious things that I've missed...but I'm about 6 or 7 hours into this already and going crazy. I've tried to keep this note to the essentials, but have more data available, but all the boxes I can open appear to be checked correctly within Decoder Pro, such as port, baud rate etc. But I can pull it back up if anyone thinks that would help. Speed testing, Sensors, Speedometer output

As I posted a few weeks ago, I'm setting up a speed matching loop. Using 8 BD-20 NCE detectors, 1 AIU, PH-Pro, RS-232 to computer running JMRI (Windows 11 OS). Using the Ultimate Speed Matching (USM) scripts as a basis, modifications seem to be working well with the following exceptions: Speed measurements can be all over the place due to "bounce" on the detectors. The JMRI Speedometer Tool seems to not see this as much (doing exit to exit on the tool). So will adding de-bounce to the 8 sensors help? Do I use active bounce, inactive bounce, both? Does this change the factors for calculating speeds since in the script, it's looking for sensors changed? Is there a way for the USM script to open up the speedometer windows and provide an output back to the USM script. In other words, is there a way in the USM script to call the speedometer and get the result back to use rather than the timers used in the USM script? Another couple anomalies: -- After the script is complete, I then run the loco at the speed steps and measure the expected speed and it seems to run a couple mph slower than during the script. -- Has anyone figured out how to speed match with an ESU decoder where SS28 is always 255 and the top of the curve is adjusted with CV5 and the rest of CV67-94 are proportional? -- Using the 3rd lowest measured speed seems to be a short cut. Has anyone taken the measured speeds, throw out the top two and bottom two and return the average speed? I have a current methodology to manually set the speed table by running the loco at SS 5, 10, 15, 20, 24, 28 and entering the measured speed into a spreadsheet that then tells me what setting to set each of those to in order to get the desired speeds (my standard is 10, 20, 30, 40, 55, 70 at those SS). After I get more of the bugs worked out of the modified USM script, I'll take a turn at trying this method. Phil Hartung Idaho Falls, ID

Controlling Alexa (Amazon) via JMRI

I would like to create some timed routines in JMRI that sends commands to Alexa to run various routines. For example, at start of session, I can start the fastclock, and then at appropriate times, it will trigger Alexa. My plan to do this is using "Voice Monkey" as the translator. VM allows you to send a command via a web link, which then will trigger Alexa. So what I need to do is get JMRI to run a weblink in the background (not open a web browser). I had asked this question a few years ago and apparently this was coming, but not available yet. Is there a way within JMRI that at a certain time on the Fast Clock, I can send a trigger using a weblink (https://api-v2.voicemonkey.io/trigger) but that will not open a browser, it will just happen in the background? Car Last field

Bug or feature? When I place a car into a new location, JOps correctly records the move in the Logger car log. However, it doe not update the Last field in the Car DB. Oversight? Jon in San Rafael

Tracking Car Movement

Lets say I wanted to follow one car on my layout as it is moved on and off the layout from storage to industry back to storage back to industry, etc. Is there an automatic way for JMRI to do that? Or do I have to do it manually?

DIY DCC decoder setting window

Hi, I am in the middle of prototyping my own DCC Accessory decoder hardware (using MicroBahner's DCC_Zubehoerdecoder software) and I would like to be able to adjust CV's and switch outputs from a window. Basically, I would like to re-create decoderpro's Turnout Control action window, but with more specific buttons and CV inputs. I have had a look through some of the scripting examples, and I'm happy building on JButtonComplexExample.py to do what I want. The issue I have is whilst I believe that I can write CV's to the decoders using the code from OpsProgExample.py, what I can't find how to do is throw the turnouts based on their address (same as the Turnout Control window). I went looking to see if I could find the code for the Turnout Control window and didn't get that far. Could anyone point me to where the code for the Turnout Control window is (so I can copy / mod) or suggest how I would control turnouts and show their current state like this window does (as in, what functions do I need to use in the script). Connect to Marklin Central station with TCP

Hello, I would like to use the TCP protocol to connect to a M?rklin central station 3 (or, in my case, a surrogate). The current JMRI implementation uses UDP which has been deprecated in favor of TCP by M?rklin. The only thing changed is the switch from UDP to TCP; the data stream remains exactly the same. The TCP port is 15731. This should be a simple change in and of itself, but there may be need to be some change to the setup page. Any help and guidance is appreciated. Thanks. Gopal

B&O 1960 Mast problem

All, I entered a new mast to my layout using the n3ix signal board with DCC control. Using B&O 1960 position targets. Normally is just use standard signal masts that looks ahead at next block, but this new one seems to be looking past next mast and it's block. Is this normal? Roger

JMRI and EasyDCC

Recently could not get JMRI on my Windows 10 laptop to talk to the EasyDCC Command Station. After much fiddling around with cables (and replaced the serial adaptor cable) I can open JMRI (5.10) on my laptop, turn layout off and on, select a loco and the buttons for programming on main and program track highlight. Also the words in the bottom left hand corner of the screen are in 'green'. However, I cannot program the loco CV's using either the main or program track. When I go to edit, preferences, defaults - the buttons for both the program track and main are blank and cannot be activated! Thoughts please?

Hello all, I'm trying to get JMRI 4.20 running on a Raspberry 3b. The RPi OS came with Java 17.0.14. I'm wondering if JMRI 4.20 will even run with that version of Java. If not I'll need to upgrade to the latest 5.x version of JMRI. Thanks and take care. Problem getting started.

I bought a SPROG IIv4 a few months ago. I have just built a MERG Kit 52 and wanted tp program it. I have connected the SPROG up the USB and Pwr lights are on When I ask it to read the CV it comes up cannot connect to Command Station (306) I have put a multimeter on Tr A and Tr B and there is no voltage reading at all at the SPROG end! Is this correct? John Greenwood

Text labels appears only partially

Hi, when creating a layout in PanelPro, text label appear partially only. example : if i put "Module 14" i only see "Module..." we have tested : with and without space in the text with or without numbers at the end short or long text always the same results. Am i doing something wrong or is it a graphical bug ? regards Jean-Francois

I'm trying to get my new dcc system recognized by jmri running on linux. Based on my reading of previous messages, I have my udev rules configured to create /dev/DCCEX and /dev/TCHLCC, and in my .bashrc I have JMRI_OPTIONS= -Dpurejavacomm.portnamepattern=(ttyACM0|ttyUSB0|DCCEX|TCHLCC|sprog2) At the moment I've only got my DCCEX connection configured in decoderpro, so I'm not worried about the LCC connection just yet. When I start DecoderPro, I get an error that the device DCCEX is not found, and then later on in the log, I see DCCEX and TCHLCC are added as matching patterns for serial ports. How can I get the matching patterns to be set before decoderpro tries to open the ports? NCE PowerPro with USB - no AIU getting to JMRI

Currently running the latest JMRI production version with a recently purchased Power Pro. I’ve created all my sensors, blocks, set up the layout. when i use my PowerCab and USB card everything works perfectly in JMRI. I can run throttles, operate switches, and show block data on my JMRI display from my AIUs. when i use my new PowerPro everything work except i am not getting AIU block data. what am i missing?

Track Analysis Tool

First off, yes, probably have too many boxcars on the layout. So I ran the track analysis tool for boxcars and the results were: Spurs. Track length 2877. 141% Yard. Track length 2070. 196% CI. Track length 2635. 154% Staging. Track length 1050. 386% I run in Aggressive mode with 2 passes and get good car movement, however I do need to add flatcars and gondolas as they were down below 20% in total of all track types. To what level should I be adjusting the boxcar percentages for best utilization Bill Ramp
