NCE PowerPro with USB - no AIU getting to JMRI #nce

Currently running the latest JMRI production version with a recently purchased Power Pro. ?I’ve created all my sensors, blocks, set up the layout.?
when i use my PowerCab and USB card everything works perfectly in JMRI. I can run throttles, operate switches, and show block data on my JMRI display from my AIUs.?
when i use my new PowerPro everything work except i am not getting AIU block data.?
what am i missing??

Mttfgeo,

?

If you are talking about the PH5, that has the USB on the front panel, it may need a firmware update. Please check the date of the firmware via the CMD STA options. If this is true, I can help you with that. I don’t think NCE has updated their website to deal with this yet.

?

Which flavor of computer and OS are you using?

I can send you the update and a batch file to make it easier. Which COM port is it using in JMRI?

?

There has been an update that corrects a problem with use of the AIU boards by the command station.

?

I’m going to list the method to do the update, you tell me which parts you might question.

?

  1. I send you a file for the update. It is a text formatted file that gets converted by the system for updating the firmware.
  2. You make sure you don’t have JMRI running.
  3. Open a DOS like command windows on the computer. (Hit the start in the corner, then type CMD).
  4. You make sure you put that update file in the same directory as the CMD window.
  5. My .bat file (script) does a MODE command that sets the COM port to particular things like baud rate, bits, etc.
  6. On the command station, via the throttle, you use the PROG/ESC key to get to the SET CMD STATION part, hit ENTER.
  7. Enter 1 to select SYSTEM
  8. Keep hitting ENTER, until you see SOFTWARE UPDATE. Hit 1 to select that.
  9. Hit 3 for the fast rate, which must match the speed in the MODE command on the computer.
  10. Now hit 6 and the PH5 will be ready to listen.
  11. On the computer, now do, but use the real name of the HEX file and the number for your connection instead of the #, don’t forget the : at the end.
    1. COPY filename.HEX COM#:
    2. Hit return on the computer and the update should happen.
  12. When things stop blinking, the throttle should return to normal.
  13. Go into the throttle and confirm the date for the firmware has changed.

?

If you tell me the COM port I can give you one bat file script that includes the right details.

On the new command station. ?AIU addresses must be 60 or less. ?(or was it 59)

The manual says 60 cabs. I don’t recall if the max was 60 or 59. So I tried a test and found that while it accepts other numbers on the cab, 59 is the highest one that seems to respond. That’s with the PH5 system. Setting cab 60 just sticks at the initial view like setting the cab id.

just an update...? ?Ken from JMRI sent a firmware update the for NCE Power Pro.? I installed that and form some reason I can see one AIU in the cabs but not both. I've gone thru all the correct addresses, and when I swap the AIUs physical position in the cab bus I can see the one I couldn't see before, but the first one tat was working i now gone..? between this and a week of teeth nashing.... I reinstalled my POWERCAB system and i'm using that for now, with everything operational as it should work.? I'm in the process of setting up a test bench for the PowerPro and a couple blocks ( BD20s, and two AIUs ) to try to simplify and figure out exactly what is happening.?

Georgia,

?

That sounds like an issue in the cab bus wiring. When you physically moved the AIU boards, you left them at the original addresses they had before? It might be worth rechecking the wires as if one of them isn’t in contact, that would account for it not being seen.

?

It might also be helpful to document for us which throttle numbers, AIU numbers, and for the PowerCab, its cab number. Also the pattern of the cab bus, what connects to which and so on down the line.

?

When you switch from the PowerCab to the PH5, do you change the cab id of the AIU or leave them the same?

?

At least when you could see the AIU in the ‘Show Cabs’ did the sensors work for that AIU?

Did you change the Jumper setting? I think there are jumps that need to be set on the USB Interface to work on all systems.
?
I thought there were exclusions to that the USB interface could send and relay.

Way beyond that level of troubleshooting… we’re into firmware updates, and detail analysis…

I think it works like this.......
?
Setting the Jumpers will set the Interface to All Systems.........
If the PowerPro has the 2007 Firmware it should work?
?
If the PowerPro has a newer firmware the Serial interface is required.

Inobu,

?

This case is a bit more involved or has mixed two different end users. I’m not 100% sure any more.

?

One case was about a user with a PowerCab and SB5. The other case was a user with a new PH5. The PH5, I walked him through a firmware update on the PH5. The PC/SB5 was running into the issue of which configuration the NCE USB needed to be to work with both setups. JMRI was complaining that the system code 7.3.0 was incorrect if he was using a SB5.

?

I’m hoping to see messages to night on either case, but I’m not sure if the threads have got mixed up. Last I heard on one of them was moving the AIU’s around found that one location wasn’t working but the other one was.

I think Its from the Upgrade thread a few days ago. Instead of hijacking the thread a new one was started which is this one. Same person (Georgia).
?
I vaguely remember there is a command structure issue between the USB and Power Pro. The USB interface does not have the commands needed
to send the AIU info. SO the COmmand Station never see the AIU. This required the usage of the Serial Port.
?
Can't say 100% but it caused me to stop dealing with the AIU. It was too much trouble. Not sure if it is the case but keep it in mind.
?
Hopefully, someone will chime in and verify that it works or not.
