Locked Re: setting up version 4.12

You obviously don't have a driver installed for the NCE USB. Please read the instructions below:

(Also please update to V4.14 as soon as it becomes available.)

Dave

Port Troubleshooting Instructions
========================

Installing NCE USB on Mac
===================
- Plug the USB side of the NCE USB into your Mac (you do not need to plug it into the PCP to do the next few steps.

- Go to System Information from Apple Menu->About This Mac->More Info.

- Look in the USB section and see if a Silicon Labs device is present. If not you have a USB hardware fault; cable, connector, port or device. That will need resolving before you go any further.

- Download and install SiLabs CP210x drivers from <>.

- Unplug the NCE USB.

- Open a Terminal Window (from /Applications/Utilities), copy and paste the following command in EXACTLY (including spaces and punctuation) then press Enter.

while : ;do clear;ls -lt /dev|head;i=$((i+1));echo $i;sleep 1;done

- This command should show about 10 lines of output and then sit looping, with a counter incrementing every second.

- Plug your device back in and wait a few seconds. Two new items with names like cu.SLAB_USBtoUART and tty.SLAB_USBtoUART should appear in the list. They should disappear if you unplug your device. If this does not happen, you do not have the correct drivers installed for your device and you will need to solve that before proceeding further.

- Once you have found your device, write down the name you see.You want the cu.xxx version not the tty.xxx version.

- If you have got this far you know your device is be being seen by the Mac, that it has a matching driver installed and the name of the connection port "cu.xxx" you need to select in JMRI.

Configuration Instructions
===================

Here are the best settings for JMRI and jumpers for Power Cab (and also SB5).

Make sure you always unplug/replug both cables on the NCE USB after changing jumpers.

It also explains how to read the version of your NCE USB (only the first digit counts, the last three report how your jumpers 2-4 are set and jumper 1 is ignored on all systems).

Power Cab Instructions
=================
The correct settings for a Power Cab V1.65 or V1.28 (as shown when the Power Cab starts up) and an NCE USB V6 (or you are not sure of the USB version) are:
- All USB Jumpers off (or at least 2, 3 & 4. Jumper 1 is ignored).
- JMRI preferences are:
-- System manufacturer: NCE
-- System connection: NCE USB
-- Serial port: <whatever is appropriate for your system>
-- USB version: V6.x.x
-- System: PowerCab
-- Additional Connection Settings checkbox ON
--- Baud rate: 9600.

The JMRI console log should then report V6.3.0. If it reports V7.3.0 and your Power Cab is V1.65, use the settings below instead.
If you don't get a version number or the system does not work, Use Help->System Console...->Copy to clipboard and paste into a post for us to see.

The correct settings for a Power Cab V1.65 or V1.65b and an NCE USB V7 are:
- All USB Jumpers on (or at least 2, 3 & 4. Jumper 1 is ignored).
- JMRI preferences are:
-- System manufacturer: NCE
-- System connection: NCE USB
-- Serial port: <whatever is appropriate for your system>
-- USB version: V7.x.x
-- System: PowerCab
-- Additional Connection Settings checkbox ON
--- Baud rate: 19200.

The JMRI console log should then report V7.3.7.

SB5 Instructions
============
The correct settings for an SB5 and an NCE USB V7 are:
- USB Jumper 4 on. All others off (or at least 2 & 3. Jumper 1 is ignored).
- JMRI preferences are:
-- System manufacturer: NCE
-- System connection: NCE USB
-- Serial port: <whatever is appropriate for your system>
-- USB version: V7.x.x
-- System: SB5
-- Additional Connection Settings checkbox ON
--- Baud rate: 19200.

The JMRI console log should then report V7.3.1.

General Troubleshooting
==================

If the system does not work after this:
- If your SB5/Power Cab is V1.65 rather than V1.65B, you may have been affected by a firmware issue (triggered by a System Reset).
- Your NCE USB may be set to a bad cab address (V7 only).
- There is a potential hardware issue with the NCE USB/Power Cab combination.
In either case, go through the following :
- Quit JMRI.
- Ensure neither LED on the NCE USB is stuck ON. If so, power cycle the USB by unplugging it from the cab bus cable.
- Ensure you have no other throttles connected.
- Restart JMRI and immediately go to Configure USB Interface under the NCE menu.
- Set the Cab ID to 3.
- Attempt a JMRI operation (use a throttle, Identify a decoder).
- The status line should stay green and it should work
-If this does not work, do not fiddle with any other settings but instead:
-- Observe whether the Cab Bus LED on the NCE USB is stuck on and report back.
-- Use Help->System Console...->Copy to clipboard and paste into a post for us to see.

Locked JMRI Locking up

Having tried using JMRI over the past few months, I have these comments to make:
I have re-written my layout every 2 weeks as when I've completed the main layout, it either crashes or locks up.
I don't find it easy to change USB connections if I change the DCC system. I am currently using a Gaugemaster Prodigy (MRC) for accessory and loco control, but will be getting a Digitrax Zephyr when they get back in production (ordered at the beginning of October). I have a PR4 for Detector sensing and which, in theory, I can use for Decoder programming with JMRI, but when I place the loco on the main track, it doesn't respond to the throttle.
A positive. I do like the turntable control. I did have problems with opposite sides, i.e. I want to be able to back a loco onto the shed, but i got round that by adding unconnected spurs on the opposite side of the turntable, and yes I have those on the layout.
Blocks and Sections leading to Transits. I have blocks set out on my JMRI panel, and i'm trying to make the sections to go with them, but i either end up with 2 few links to follow on sections, or too many and with duplications..There seems to be no way of removing spurious links or adding missing links. And if I don't give a direction for the spurious links, I can't save the section.
Signal masts and the accompanying SML get deleted for no apparent reason, even though the heads are defined and showing in the mast table. These leave me with an X where the masts were, but I can't delete them. Putting the mouse over them shows an unconnected mast.
Currently, when I start JMRI, it no longer loads the layout panel, but I end up with a blank screen. There is no error message in the log.
Can somebody help me as hair has not just turned grey, but silver trying to sort this out.

OS Win10 Proffessional
JMRI 4.12
DCC Gaugemaster (MRC) Prodigy for Loco and currently Accessory control. Digitrax PR4 for decoder programming, and when I can make sure that i'm not going to blow up my BDL168s, for occupancy sensing.

While not strictly a JMRI problem, Digitrax say to directly connect one of the DCC legs to pin 1 of Loconet. which worries me as Pin 1 is +7.5 V and DCC is Approx 15V Square wave AC. No mention of a connection to pin 6 -7.5V which would complete the circuit for synchronisation. Any ideas would be welcome please.
Chris.

Locked Re: CROSSOVERS AND OTHER FORMATIONS

Dave,

The UP and DOWN Double Crossings are made up using 4 PECO Finescale Turnouts, a Diamond Crossing and short lengths of flexitrack to facilitate movements from UP Main to UP Relief and from UP Relief to UP Main and similarly for the DOWN Main and DOWN Relief at the 4-road Western exit of my main station.

I have read both Ken and Nigel's replies and it would appear that I need to replicate the LE panels as Control Panels to get better control of the Turnouts and associated signals so I now need to break down the layout into each of the three locations.

The layout has now been expanded to cover two stations and a Depot Yard so I need to Rename the whole layout plan as the relevant Station names and Depot name and remove all track beyond the Edge Connectors between the three locations so that I will have three separate Control Panels, one for each location, connected together by the Edge Connectors.

The Main Station is the one I am working on at the moment. It is the turnout formations for both the East and West Approaches that has given rise to this query.

Just to make things more complicated it would now appear that at least one of the Double Crossovers may end up being formed on a curve! However, as you say, this will not mean that there is a need to change the control of the relevant turnouts as I will still be following the straight on route or the crossover route through the formation.

Dave,

Did you actually install 4 turnouts and a level crossing or did you purchase and install a pre-built double cross-over?

Regardless of how it is constructed, the operational aspects do not change. I would use the icons since they incorporate the logic to handle the switch machines and signal masts.

I have several crossovers and two Double Crossovers to install. The icons are excellent and work a treat on the layout editor panels.
However, these are made up of several turnouts and a Diamond Crossing on the layout and it occurred to me that should I not be using these icons but make them up exactly the same as on the actual layout?
This would be a real shame since all formations including Slips and 3-ways are working perfectly on the panels and such a lot of work has gone into getting the icons to work correctly.
I am certain that someone else raised this same point ( excuse the pun!) in a recent discussion about getting turnout formation icons on panels to control the relevant turnouts on the actual layout but I have not been able to locate the comment.
Controlling the turnouts together is not a problem since both opposing pairs can have the same address and work together.
Which is the correct way to go please?

Dave: I think I used write Full sheet and write changes on sheet on the CV pane because I'm aware of this issue, and it still borked on me.? I also noted that while I had JMRI working in Direct Byte mode, Loconet monitor said that the commands were being done in Page mode.? I also got issues with writes from the CV pane when in Ops mode and also with single CVs.??

I'm just about to post some logs... .

Locked Re: Test version 4.13.6 of JMRI/DecoderPro is available for download #announcement

This appeared to be fine until I ran an autotrain in dispatcher, when I got multiple null pointer exceptions. ?The train failed to run as normal and stop at the end. ?Fortunately I was aware of the 'new standard scale process' and its relevance to the timetable tool and spotted that there are dispatcher changes associated with this too. ?It seems that if you are using one of the scale settings impacted by this process (e.g. British N) then you need to check your scale settings for both the timetable tool and dispatcher options as a migration step. ?The scale setting in dispatcher options was cleared. ?Resetting it fixed the problem.

Pull Request (PR) 6224 has a change to display slots that are not in FREE state. ?It should be in development builds shortly, and then the next test release around December 4th. ?

The discussion about what to do beyond that is great, and if it settles down to a consensus somebody will probably code it.

There's a known issue with the possibility of "Programmer in Use" if you Write All Sheets on any pane rather than Write Full Sheet on the CVs pane. This has been around for along time and is not yet resolved.

Iain,

Interesting comment on slips. I find it easier to use slips. One time I created a slip ladder (3 slips) using slips, signal masts and signal mast logic.

There isn't a "correct" way and how you set up your panels is very much up to you. Use the facilities given and add things you want to add. There is no point (pun intended!) in putting in detailed layouts made up of individual turnouts which can represented by Layout Editor - UNLESS it makes it easier to see things on the panel when carrying out control sequences. For example I have used crossovers for 3 crossovers BUT I have used back to back turnouts for a double slip because it made putting in signals and control buttons easier. Your panel is a control diagram so you don't need it to look EXACTLY like your layout - though I believe that you can import track plans to JMRI (I have a contact who has done this). I have made new sensor buttons and changed the BR-2003 icons provided to get the system I want. Try looking at some signal box diagrams to get an idea. I'll send you a picture of my panel if it might help - send to iain at iandjtolmie dot com.

To display the graph, you need to select a station segment. The button bar at the bottom will then display the Graph button.
